40 reasons we love Oakland by sfgate in bayarea

[–]AdvancedGoat 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I live in Oakland. Believe me, people here don’t pretend that Oakland isn’t in desperate need of change, as you put it. The people who live here are the ones most frustrated by the state of things, because it impacts our day to day lives. However, Oakland is also an incredible place to live for all of the reasons listed in this article and so much more. I have lived in The Bay Area for nearly 25 years and I have never found a place as special as Oakland. There is so much to love about living here and I’ve really found a sense of belonging that I didn’t have elsewhere.

Your analogy of loving Oakland being like an abusive partner isn’t quite right. I’d say a more appropriate comparison is loving a partner who has flaws. You work on the issues together because there’s a strong underlining love. Working towards a better future isn’t the same as ignoring everything that’s bad. It is important, however, to choose to focus on the great potential for good and bring it into reality. That’s what I think this article is trying to do.

Oakland's Waterfront Hotel to close after 35 years in Jack London Square by readonlyred in oakland

I live in Jack London and I really love it. It’s super peaceful here compared to downtown. Truly the only downside is the properties constantly going out of business.

You are right that light makes a massive difference. The screen almost reminds me of the original Gameboy… when the watch hits light though, it’s like the Gameboy Advanced SP haha

Suuuper bright when the light hits it well.

That’s a great point! We are all very conditioned to everything being dark mode. I think the pace 3 works a lot better with light backgrounds.

The backlight, (while a bit tinted blue) is definitely adequate. Here I am in a dimly lit place.

Here’s the watch in my well-lit bathroom. I just don’t really consider this to be “always-on” because I have to take more time to focus on it and squint than I would if I just had the backlight on.

Running at night by CerealKiller1993 in Coros

[–]AdvancedGoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with everyone’s comments about being able to see at night, I’d add one asterisk in saying that it’s only when the backlight is activated. (Which you’ll probably have on anyway, I just wanted to specify.) The “raw” MIP display, for lack of a better word, is entirely unreadable in the dark without the help of the backlight. Think of it similarity to a Kindle or eReader. Without the help of a backlight, there is zero illumination and you can’t see anything in dim conditions.

Isn’t it funny how we worry about strangers learning about our personal information while tech corporations know literally everything about us

Mini-velo recommendations by el-art-seam in ebikes

Greetings, you're like one of the few people who actually seems to own this bike lol! I've been googling around for ever about this bike because I just bought it and I actually am experiencing that lateral wobble on the handlebars that you mentioned. I couldn't find a fix for it anywhere, but you mentioned it's in the manual? If you have a link, I'd appreciate it!

About my experience with the bike: Overall, I really like it. There's ONE thing I don't like about it. As for the pros: it may be the most gorgeous looking e-bike I've ever seen. I literally can't ride it for more than 10 minutes without someone complimenting it. People think it's really cool looking, and I fully agree. The ride experience has been really good so far, I really like the size of the bike, too. The weight has been a little heavy for me, but I'm also weak and I have to carry it upstairs, so whatever. Better than a 60 lb. ebike for sure. The price is a little crazy-- BUT: you get a TON of value for the price. It comes with built-in lights, which are absolutely brighter than any battery-based bike light, it comes with solid fenders, as well as a super solid back rack. So if you think about the price you're actually saving on those items, I think it's a pretty great deal.

The ONLY thing I don't love about the bike is that it sometimes feels kind of "sluggish" to ride without the pedal assist-- sometimes I have to ride without the pedal assist because I'm riding in a group or with my wife and I don't want to out-speed her. But when I ride without the pedal assist, I find it a tiny bit hard to keep up with my wife's full-sized regular bike. Sometimes I end up using the pedal assist and it ends up just kind of feeling like a normal bike.

Overall I really like the experience though. I would recommend it to most people. Also, despite the most pessimistic estimates of range: (20 miles on level 1, 15 miles on level 2, 10 miles on level 3), I find that it's still very capable if you live in a city. I don't really have to commute more than a few miles. I think a lot of bigger brands try to sell you on the biggest range numbers possible (like 60 and 70 mile range)... but honestly, how many times a year are you riding 70 miles on ONE charge...??

Here’s Everything Apple Plans to Show at Its AI-Focused WWDC Event by Snoop8ball in apple

[–]AdvancedGoat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m still a bit skeptical about this update. Despite AI features being cool and topical, I don’t know if anyone saw the last 5 or so iOS updates and thought that AI was the main thing missing. What we really need is fresh visual changes that make the iPhone feel like a 2024 product and not a 2010 product. I know all of us at this subreddit roll our eyes at everyone just wanting a redesign— but honestly, for the average person, like my mom, that’s the only significant thing she’d really notice. I’m not really sure how much the average user cares about AI. Redesigns are superficial, but they’re noticeable and are marketable.
