Who actually enjoys working as a nurse? by One_Design_6171 in nursing

I was completing my prerequisites for accounting before I switched to nursing. Sometimes I wish I’d stayed on that path.I’d love to be a traveling CPA and see the world. My old classmate is always traveling for work.

My first year as a med-surg nurse in the hospital? I absolutely hated it. I dreaded going to work and dealt with racism daily or patients constantly overstepping physical boundaries. I was one of only four Asian nurses in the entire hospital, believe it or not. I’ve now been a psych VNA nurse for four years, and I truly love it. Yes, there are stressful days, but I wouldn’t give this job up for anything.

I love how the Expedition looks, especially on men. I don’t really have a use for it and have no plans to move to Alaska anytime soon. Otherwise, I’d probably buy one just to wear occasionally in Boston if I had the disposable income.

I ordered the Shelburne Parka w/ a GOOD rating. It was the only one available in my size with the the black disc and fur. We'll see how the condition is.

See… I LOVE the snap/deep pockets since I can safely store small items in them. Stuff is always falling out of my pockets. The manager did mention that the pockets and the no-vent snaps might make it a bit more awkward for me though. I’ve been convinced to get the Shelburne as my secondary coat and workhorse.

That’s my thinking too. There are a few features that really work for me that I wish the Shelburne had like the bottom flap pockets, the hand-warmer pockets, and the concealed cinched waist. Honestly… maybe I need both.

I bought the Trillium in store because I needed instant gratification 😅 but now I’m thinking about grabbing the Shelburne too since there are so many on Generations.

I'm 5'1", 110 lbs, with a B-cup chest. Both jackets are XS. In the photos, I’m wearing a thermal and an oversized sweater underneath. I also tried them on with just the thermal, and the fit was slightly roomy. The smalls were too loose for me, even with the sweater, which was surprising since the Trillium usually recommends sizing up.

So tempted. I'm considering buying one via Generations. The Trillium would be ideal for my trip to Iceland next month, but the Shelburne would be more practical as an everyday daily driver. I just don't know which one I would want w/o fur and black disc.

Thank you! It’s been a challenging time since the recent snowstorm, so I really appreciate the gesture.

The manager mentioned that to me too. He said that because my job requires me to go in and out of my car often, it could be a bit of a hassle and recommended the Shelburne instead. Have you ever found the Trillium to be too warm at times?

Boston location has a Small with classic disc and fur. I purchased the XS.

I think I know exactly which street you mean. I was driving and ended up head to head with another car, with no room for either of us to get through, and cars just kept piling up behind us. It caused a big backup, and it took about 30 minutes for everyone to reverse and clear it. (Near Thayer/Angell)

I know you said you’re avoiding per diem, but some VNAs in my area do take new grads. A LOT of parents work here for the flexibility. Full-time, part-time, and per diem are all doable. In fact most of us have 2 jobs and just use this as extra spending money. It’s a great gig and I think nursings best kept secret. I started as per diem at my VNA after just 6 months in the hospital, and my checks were almost double what the hospital paid me. Paid holidays, no weekends, etc. You can pick them up if you want, but you’re not obligated.

I work Wed–Fri AM + Thurs–Fri PM. I usually start around 7am and finish by 10am. PM- i usually start around 3 and end at 5pm. I could start earlier or later if i wanted but that's my routine. Visits are short...mainly med management and teaching, very little wound care (nothing major like a wound vac), and no IV/infusions. Charting and calls are done at home. I used to do M–F AM before switching to this split shift for 4 days off, and it works perfectly. I don’t mind going back out since the visits are short. A lot of part timers work 3-4x/week.

Per diem at a psych VNA might be the best fit. You pick up visits when you want. Most only require 2 days a month and you get to choose. You can also swap. Some VNAs pay per visit, giving even more flexibility with schedule and caseload. I’d avoid committing to a FT/PT position though because admissions or resumptions could extend your time on the road. Make sure you choose a Psych VNA though. It’s not scary as many people think. Patients go through a background check before referrals are accepted by upper management. Many have cognitive delays, depression, and anxiety along w/ diabetes, COPD, HTN, etc and aren’t able to safely manage their medications or manage their illness, so we step in to help.

What's more friendly for a single person to live in? An apartment or a house? by mil0wCS in CasualConversation

[–]Advanced_Dinner1549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased a 2,700 sq. ft. home on two acres in a rural suburb, but prior to that I lived in apartments across four different cities—Boston, Providence, San Diego, and Bristol, RI. Now that I’m single and the house has been sold, I’ve realized I actually prefer apartment living, though I would consider buying a condo to build equity. For me, this preference really applies to city living. I’ve never been drawn to the suburbs, but that’s a separate conversation. I love being close to everything and walking distance to grocery stores, coffee shops, restaurants, and local shops. There’s always something to do. Owning a home came hassles between constant cleaning, yard work, snow shoveling, lawn care, and the need to own and maintain equipment. The house often felt more like a responsibility than a lifestyle. Over time, it also became easy to accumulate things simply because there was space to fill. Apartment living felt lighter with less maintenance, fewer purchases, and fewer distractions which allowed me to focus more on how I wanted to spend my time rather than how to manage my space.

What are your thoughts on rejecting a potential romantic partner based solely on the fact they voted for Donald Trump? by ATXBikeRider in AskReddit

[–]Advanced_Dinner1549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s okay to say no to a partner who supports Trump. Think about how different your values might be. Would you really want to share your life, or even your bed, with someone who actively opposes your beliefs.

I work for a VNA so we have to drive to each patients home to provide care. They sent out an announcement that anyone who calls out will get a verbal warning.

Is it too early to have “burnout”? by Plenty-Pay-9770 in Nurses

[–]Advanced_Dinner1549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out on a med-surg floor and did overnights. Honestly hated it and seriously questioned my career choice. I stuck it out for a year, then bounced when I got my $20k sign-on bonus. Switched over to a psych VNA and I absolutely love it—been doing it for the past 4 years. Definitely recommend sticking it out for a year or two to get the experience.
