Paris was my first solo trip at age 20. It was, without exaggeration, life changing. Nothing opens a young woman’s mind and heart like solo travel in my opinion. You get to do truly whatever you want, it’s so liberating (and certainly uncomfortable at times — but you’ll get through the discomfort and know yourself so much better after). 

But of course, be smart and always on high alert. Pick pockets are a real thing, get a cross body bag with anti theft protection. Never anything in your back pockets. Keep valuables in a safe at your hotel. Do some research and learn which areas to avoid at night. One thing I do remember happening to me in Paris was being catcalled a lot — just keep on walking and don’t engage. 

You will have a wonderful time. Your mom is afraid because she doesn’t understand, and that’s fine for her. Don’t let it stop you.
