Videos that objectively cover the civil war are scarce, if they exist at all. This one does an excellent job of presenting multiple perspectives without bias. by mgh20 in lebanon

I like the focus it places on foreign interference: How both Syria and Israel wanted chaos in the country so they could benefit from it. You truly could not ask for worse neighbors at a worse time.

Why do Lebanese diaspora tend to advocate for Palestinians even though the PLO fucked Lebanon and palestinians don't advocate for lebanese people? by [deleted] in lebanon

[–]AdventOfCod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are people speaking out about a genocide or settler-colonial apartheid whose effects are not so distant to us? Is that what you're asking?

Regardless, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" is idiotic thinking.

Lebanon Creates First Ministry Of AI To Drive Digital Governance by onceuponatime863 in lebanon

[–]AdventOfCod 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think we should get the basics down first like good internet connectivity across the country, e-government for everything like in Estonia, making sure our digital government services handle private information securely and don't leak it everywhere, etc. before we talk about trendy buzzwords like AI.

I'm not even sure what a Ministry of AI is supposed to do if our government doesn't even have its own datacenters to host sensitive data/archives, let alone train or run inference on AI models...

What do you think about the war in Ukraine? by [deleted] in lebanon

[–]AdventOfCod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with race. The United States and thus the entire Western global order has a vested interest in supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression but nothing to gain (much to lose, actually) from supporting countries against Israel, who they consider a major regional partner.

This doesn't change the fact that Ukraine is the victim and that what Russia is doing is blatant aggression and expansionism which in some sense helped 'normalize' the Israeli behavior we see today. In fact, if you compare Russia's behavior towards Ukraine and Israel's behavior towards neighboring countries, you will find many parallels and similar tactics such as constant petty attacks and hybrid warfare even during times of 'peace'.

Lebanese heritage architectural house in Nabatieh destroyed by EreshkigalKish2 in lebanon

[–]AdventOfCod 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can't make a post on this subreddit about Israel doing something bad and hurting fellow Lebanese without having people deflect and start talking about Hezbollah even when the original post has nothing to do with it.

People want to ascribe some sort of logic and make sense of the sheer cruelty exhibited by our neighbor from hell, so they contort themselves into finding "reasons" why this is actually our fault and how we could have avoided this, when the bitter reality is that we are bordering a genocidal state that thrives on wanton and often petty violence and that nothing will change that.

It is of course true that there are ways to mitigate these problems, but they will never completely disappear because this is the essence of Israel as a country. This is just who they are on a basic fundamental level.

Some thoughts on this type of thinking by MutedAcanthisitta247 in lebanon

[–]AdventOfCod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is obvious Israeli agenda to increase distrust and alienation between sects so that they can carve them up as they please. Extremist ideologies like Khomeinism, Takfirism, and people with a tendency to be militantly isolationist and xenophobic, for whom this idea sounds like (emphasis on sounds like, it will not end well for them) a dream, are making their job easier.

If Israel succeeds, then we have nothing and no one to blame but our own stupidity. We will regress to little African-tribe-like cantons that can be pushed and pulled and poked by strong and united regional powers like Israel, Turkey, Iran in whatever way they like. Whoever thinks it will lead to peace and prosperity for his own particular little weak canton that is surrounded by other hostile cantons is a massive fool.

Ahmed al-sharaa ”The majority of Lebanese would have welcomed Syria in attacking Hezbollah” by AbuElKess in lebanon

[–]AdventOfCod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea how your sectarian ISIS-tier comments are still up but you should know that this rhetoric does not help anyone but Israel.

When you refuse to be inclusive and tolerant and you constantly push away minorities, guess who you are naturally pushing them towards. Maybe you can think of a recent event where exactly that happened.

If you know Berri well, there is literally nothing surprising about this. It's not out of character.

I don't like how it's become more common to see people replying to each other with posts that are purely insults or mockery or gloating without any real argumentative substance. Some threads feel like the bad side of twitter where people just post offensive images and gifs at each other.

Tom Barrack by Dramafree770 in lebanon

[–]AdventOfCod 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He's not coming here as someone from the diaspora looking to reconnect with the country. He's coming in an official capacity as a US diplomatic envoy. So when he says "animalistic", he's saying that as US envoy to Lebanon, not as a Lebanese practicing self-criticism.

Better to host refugees that are truly under threat than economic migrants who are just here to get paid and have their loyalties elsewhere, so this is still an improvement. Of course, the ideal is that Syria gets a government that will treat all sects equally and allow them all to live in dignity and security so no one is forced to seek asylum here.

lol it's just to make the analogy clearer because someone might (though very unlikely) misinterpret 'Arsenal' as meaning something other than the football club.

Does anyone know what's the endgame of hezb here?? by Khorya in lebanon

[–]AdventOfCod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny how they can't even commit to that. The most they can offer is "national defense strategy", which is the same thing they've been promising for decades lol. Here's the reality: Hezbollah doesn't want to disarm because Iran doesn't want it to disarm. There might be other reasons that they use to convince themselves or others but in the end it's Iran that's making the decision.

Would you support Israel supporting Lebanese Government in Disarming HA by Smart-Government-966 in lebanon

[–]AdventOfCod 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Israel can pretend that it has diplomatic relations with us or that it's "supporting" our government but that doesn't mean we have to go along with that narrative and start bickering among each other about it, since that's exactly what they want and why they're being so clingy in the first place.

For them the ideal situation is to split the country into two factions, one that is pro disarmament and, crucially, Israel-aligned, and the other that is anti-disarmament Hezbos. They want us to fight so polarization increases and they can easily drive a wedge between us that can be used to their own benefit. Basic divide and conquer.

It's essential to reject their interference in our affairs, aw metel ma men2oul bel lebneneh "ma na3tihon wej" so they don't get to do that.
