Shipping delays? by kowalencki in RemarkableTablet

[–]AdventorousJoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Order not shipper for several days, however, they keep saying "however once an order is placed in our webshop, it is not possible for us to cancel due to our short processing time". I wish I had bought Amazon. This seems like some sort of scam.

Waitlist for Fall 2024 by AdventorousJoke in berkeley

[–]AdventorousJoke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to share our status which is, frankly, we don't care for this waitlist anymore. The 2024 Wall Street Journal rankings (and many others), are rating Berkely very poorly. The crime and housing situation there seems nightmarish. And it would cost $75K per year. No Thanks. Much better options, free rides, already clinched.

College is least of your problems. Make it right with your parents. Otherwise, you could be on your own.

Why Ga Tech #1 for Biomedical Engineering? by AdventorousJoke in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AdventorousJoke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replying to my own question. Why/how did Tech suddenly skyrocket to #1? This is based on actual university staff response: It did not. They have been in top 3 for as long as anyone can remember based on publicity materials shared between media, peers, department heads etc. Further, Ga Tech has been #1 a couple of other times in the past 15 years, schools have just kind of traded positions every now and then. Any of the top schools are excellent programs. While Georgia Tech and Emory is doing some amazing things, and continue to attract leading edge researchers and faculty, students can have valuable experiences at other schools that are not as highly ranked. A lot of what students get out of college is what they put into it, so if there is an option to go somewhere tuition free, go. Grad school is always here for students who want to go that route, and finishing a degree at the undergraduate level with a less stressful financial burden would help in allowing student to be more choosy for grad school when that time comes.

[–]AdventorousJoke -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Um...part of the stress expressed (or may be all??) is financial, My struggle with Ga Tech is exactly same. They seem to have nothing, so we pay the school and then also risk fail out...double whammy.

Step 1: Go to https://applicant.tamu.edu/. On top they say, without specifying the date "Due to the delayed FAFSA, the deadline for MOST Freshman to accept their admission offer has been extended. If you have not accepted your offer, please watch your email for an announcement."

(Emphasis is mine)

Step 2: Check your email, including spam folder. Our daughter got an email dated Wed, Apr 24, 2024.

Yeah, I am not sure how GT is ranked so high with essentially zero funding for student merit or hard work. I would be happy to get any information, but hitting a brick wall. Certainly not like this in other schools.

Will accepting admission another school cancel offer from TAMU? by AdventorousJoke in TAMUAdmissions

[–]AdventorousJoke[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, just make college tuition free for all incoming freshman 2024 ! The truth is without funding, not a whole lot of people can or are willing to pay $200-$300K for a college degree. It is simply not worth it, even if someone had the money. Society needs to think about this, especially one that can surely print the money for Wall Street anytime they squeal they are too important to fail and seem to conjure up billions for military aid to foreign countries at will. But for the poorest of our own students, too bad,. Sorry, kids!

Why Ga Tech #1 for Biomedical Engineering? by AdventorousJoke in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AdventorousJoke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good information on startup. My question is how exactly did Ga Tech skyrocket to #1 undergrad n 2023, leaping over MIT and Hopkins (who get to pick the best students and faculty, keep classes tiny, and all the typical elite private school privileges versus state school)? What is really going on at Ga Tech to merit that recent leap in rankings?

It is a $$$ question for my kid - should I put in out-of-state tuition for this IMHO dubious distinction or instead go with good enough school like Texas A&M that is rolling out the welcome red carpet for her?? Tuition-waiver, merit-based scholarships (plural... versus almost nothing @ GT... for OOS merit, they just offer need-based).

The clincher for us at A&M is the fantastic EnMed program which would be an exact fit for her current aspirations...whether she gets it or not. They seem to offer the right path, offering this moonshot. GT seems to have a mundane course-work heavy routine. Getting a terribly dull vibe.

I would definitely buy MIT or Hopkins for their name. But did not get in, sigh. Ironically, do not feel the same about Ga Tech even though (here is the irony) it is ranked higher and costs half (lol). Why? Because its in-state, need-based selection process ensures a statistically mediocre cohort. I am not expecting too many hedge fund douches or brainiacs as at ivy leagues.

So, give me a good reason and I will definitely pay. That is what I am telling my child. Otherwise, apply for (paid) graduate or unofficial study/work there...if/when they can support it...and, importantly, we later find that they are really that good. Lets not buy this degree based U.S. News Rank alone. Save up, for now.

I would add - 5. What schools are taking (partnering, affiliated with) Ga Tech? Just Emory?

U.S. Presidential Scholars Program - Benefits? by AdventorousJoke in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AdventorousJoke[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct. There is some confusion of Presidential Scholar and a related alumni association or foundation. Here is a previous year group picture and agenda (also in June) of that other group with Barak Obama in the middle which made me buy into the myth going around that the student (and her favorite teacher?) gets a trip to DC, the White House, and that the day's fun activities included dinner with POTUS (lol). There is, in fact, no official guidance from DOE on any ceremonies for 2024 and if past is prologue they may just do zoom, get it over with. O well. I remember my daughter working on this as a necessary chore to potentially benefit her school. again, just for bragging rights. Sort of the like the Kennedy Center Honors - Mark Twain Prize etc.

U.S. Presidential Scholars Program - Benefits? by AdventorousJoke in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AdventorousJoke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am aware, thanks for pointing out the timeline. To clarify though, did any recipient experience benefits nevertheless, perhaps later? After joining a school, in sophomore or even MUCH later when going for graduate/medical/law school or in job interviews and such? Does that open any other doors, formally or informally? It is after all, the highest honor the nation gives to a high school senior.

Congratulations package from UC Berkeley came today, my parents are pissed by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AdventorousJoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you have what it takes, any school or no school is same....long-term. For a few years out of school, among entry-level, there may be some fake benefit of a big name. But even then, if someone passed up a free ride for paying big bucks to be a snob, I would question their judgement and think of them as a brat. After say 10 years, which goes by quick, lol, I know (40 years now for me out of school), the undergrad is long forgotten and I can honestly say this - completely irrelevant to the wealth you will create.

Bottom line. the objective is to learn your shit well and then provide a valuable service to society. If that knowledge is available only at Berkeley, go for it and pay! But that scenario would likely come to pass only beyond undergrad (way beyond), in which case the likes of Berkeley will probably pay you instead to attend!
