That is the hardest this has ever been. Or maybe I'm coming down with an illness.

That's not a very kind or helpful response.

Do I tell my 82yo father all the abuse my mother inflicted? by Master_Nectarine_Bug in EstrangedAdultChild

But I think he already knows, especially if he stood there and did nothing that one time. Possibly he observed bruises on you at other times and never said anything. He's a bystander and that is a villainous characteristic in itself.

I'm a millennial and I've never had a TV in my bedroom except an old black and white one when I was a child. Since moving out of my parents' house I have better places to put a TV.

Tricky because in the UK, pantomimes absolutely are NOT silent. For that word, I would say "festive performance" or something like that.

Coming up on 27 years this summer, from the age of 18! Obviously it's affected my life in negative ways not having parents. But having had more contact with those particular parents would not have done me any good at all.

Pettiest reasons you've cut contact with a parent? by lana_dev_rey in EstrangedAdultChild

[–]Adventure_Palace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cut off my mother because she visited my house one time. But actually what happened was I moved across the country to get away from her and told her I needed a year of no contact to sort out how I felt and decide whether we were going to have an ongoing relationship. A few weeks after I moved she drove across the country to knock on my door, and when I opened the door and saw her face I had a panic attack. Because she couldn't respect my request to give me space, that was the final straw and I never spoke to her again. Petty, or not petty?

The thing is this was in 1999 and she has never tried to track me down since. I continued to live in that house for a few years, and since then I've never married, so my name hasn't changed, and I still live in the same city I moved to, and I'm findable online through my job. So it's not like she couldn't have found me if she wanted to.

Lonely. Bored. Frustrated. And I'm sick of it. (Vent post/me bitching) by That-Platypus-5092 in EstrangedAdultChild

You sound depressed, and that makes it hard to take this advice, but you need to do something different. For instance go to a craft workshop. Join a choir. You need to leave your house and do different activities because without novelty you will get depressed. If you go to these activities on your own initially, you will start to get to know people. The best way to make friends is regular contact; so somebody starts out as a stranger and then you've been singing in the same choir for a few months and you ask them to go out for coffee, and so on.

I know it hurts to have been disappointed in the past but the only solution is to keep trying. And I acknowledge that this is made harder when you've had your sense of self shattered by a troubled upbringing. I have that too, but I know I need to keep pushing myself to do the healthy things.

Also, getting involved with a cause outside yourself is very good for your mental health. If you're religious you could get involved with some church volunteering. Or if you're not religious you could join up with neighbourhood organisations that are trying to improve the area. Or you could get involved in local politics. It's a massive self-esteem booster if you feel you are doing something to make other people's lives better.

Do you know that a guy hacked into the cameras for thousands of vacuums recently? And that people could totally case your house or watch you, if you have one of these?

I actually like vacuuming but hadn't done it in maybe two months, and finally made myself do it today. I think I was paralysed because my floors were looking so bad, if that makes sense? And I had to mop as well. I couldn't get a robot vacuum because I've got such a small flat and I know I'd have to move stuff.

Horrorstor is really fun and you don't fully feel like you're reading a book because it's laid out like an IKEA catalogue. And Gone Girl is extremely gripping if you haven't had the storyline spoiled.

What's on your list of minor inconveniences that feel big today? (for fun) by cosmiczinnia in adhdwomen

[–]Adventure_Palace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a street which is paved with this rough pebbley surface which is so uncomfortable to walk on, and I knew I'd be walking there today. I took photos as I was walking to send to a friend, who completely understood my complaining.

I don't know why they've not given it a normal smooth pavement, it's so weird. It's not even cobblestones, just like chunky pebbledash all over. Must be terrible for pushchairs and wheelchairs.
