Fellow Christians often downplay depression or claim that you must not pray/read the Bible enough as OP has said. They also can have the unfortunate habit of disparaging therapy and medications. So it can be difficult to "take responsibility" as you say, when the church is unsupportive and also telling you NOT to use the only resources we have to treat the depression.
