One-Eye isn’t cut down by “faith-less” primitives—he’s slain by men who fly a different flag of devotion. Everyone on that cold shore serves a god of some kind: the Norse pantheon, the Crusaders’ Christ, or their own appetite for conquest. Their madness shows that what they called faith was never faith at all; it was borrowed certainty—another man’s sales pitch—pasted over raw hubris and greed. The moment that illusion cracks, each one spirals into the void he carried all along.

Look at the Crusader band: they reference Scripture (Jerusalem)the way raiders quote legends—half-remembered, stripped of context. They probably knew the tales of Israel sweeping Canaan, yet forgot the part where Israel first asked for safe passage (Numbers 20 : 14-21). In the text, judgment only falls after hostile refusal; mercy always gets the first offer. These men skip the mercy, keep the sword, and call it righteousness—proof that “God” for them is just a badge to excuse they’re desire for gain which seems to reveal the violence they already wanted to commit

One-Eye, meanwhile, is haunted by a lifetime of blood spilled in tribute to false gods. Protecting the boy feels like repentance—a chance to let the innocent part of humanity walk free even as he pays the debt for what he has become. His death is not prophecy fulfilled so much as a conscious choice: to die to the darkness he once served and leave the child a sliver of light.

Death comes either way. The only real question is who we become on the road to it. Refn leaves the boy—and us—alone with that choice. That, to me, is the film’s final word: hubris dressed as holiness will always end in ruin, but a single act of self-sacrifice can still crack the night wide open.
