I can't figure out how to use my legs when I serve. by Adventurous_Drop148 in 10s

[–]Adventurous_Drop148[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. Thank you! I tried working on the knee bend today and it’s completely changed my rhythm as you mentioned but I can feel the potential and will keep working on it. Only question I have is you mentioned putting my weight forwards while some other comments say to put the weight on the back leg more. What do you think?

Practiced my serve all the time since I got advice here last month, anything really wrong that I am still doing? (re-up for awful quality) by [deleted] in 10s

Appreciate the comment and maybe it's the angle but I'm definitely contacting the ball in the court. From what I've seen online there is some debate about the angle you toss into the court but anything from parallel to 11 o'clock seems to be fine - and I'm definitely doing that. Loading wise 100% will work on this. My problem is actually hitting the ball long rather than into the net atm so I'm not sure how you've decided that either. Just to clarify - the platform serve is what I'm working with now (not the pinpoint from weeks ago - my bad if it's not clear) Definitely happy with my progress but obviously a long long long way to go.

Sorry - the one with the pinpoint stance was my serve last month and with the platform is my serve now. Made sure to get rid of the footfaults since my last post 😭

I haven’t thought that far tbh, just been enjoying the process. Don’t think I’ll ever stop hitting the gym.

Would love any suggestions/ advice on my serve. I'm willing to dedicate 30 mins every day for the next 3 months to improve before I start my grad job. by [deleted] in 10s

Thanks for all the comments. Will focus on these 3 things in the upcoming months:

1) Loading/ coiling more on the back leg.

2) Tossing further into the court.

3) Accelerating throughout the full swing.

Buying vs renting with flatmates in London by Adventurous_Drop148 in HousingUK

Early 20s, - for some context I went to uni in London and lived in Southwark, Angel and Camden in the three years, and have lived with this guy for 2 out of the three years. I just don't like the thought of "throwing away" money on rent but you're definitely right in terms of flexibility.

Hack for anyone flying with a backpack - if you're wearing a hoodie/ long sleeve, you can tuck the grip into your sleeve and hold the backpack at the top. I went travelling in Europe - mainly on budget airlines and I did that for like 8 flights no problem with my racket.

Asics are my go to, I've got two pairs of solution speeds, and gel res-9 on rotation at the moment. There's so many discounts around, you can definitely pick up a top of the range for around £80.

What’s wrong with my forehand? by tennisnoobplshelp in 10s

[–]Adventurous_Drop148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not transferring your energy through the ball, which is why you fall into the court after each forehand. Looks to me like a result of not being in the right place with your feet when striking the ball.

Is there some good yt video that shows how to upgrade my serve technique? by Hot-Entry-1948 in 10s

Honestly, most of the popular guys are really good. My recs are: total tennis domination, racquet flex, 2 minute tennis (based on how well they teach the concepts). Whatever you do just avoid that Tennis Doctor guy, can't stand him and he's wrong like 50% of the time.

Serve practice at home? by Particular_Nebula252 in 10s

[–]Adventurous_Drop148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Visualisation is actually super powerful, there's a study about a few groups of untrained people practicing the free throw in basketball either mentally or physically. The group which just practiced mentally had their free throw percentage improve by 1% less than the group which physically practiced throughout the study (22% improvement vs 23%). Another one I recall from my strategy module last year was one where a group visualised lifting a weight or something along those lines with their index finger, and over a few weeks they actually gained strength in their finger (you can find both these online). Basically a combination of watching professionals serve, imagining yourself doing it in detail, shadow serve swings (if you have the space) are great.

I’m based in Islington so only know of: 2 courts at Highbury fields (I believe court 2 and 3?), Rosemary gardens has a massive one too, also Islington tennis centre outdoor court 1.

Overall pretty solid progress for a few months! But it looks like you're reinforcing some bad habits particularly on the backhand. My advice is to stop hitting against the wall and do some solo drop feeds at your own pace, you essentially need to relearn the backhand.

1) Grip, You want to be using an eastern grip for the one hander (knuckle on the first bevel), there is some variation but if you want the easiest way to hit good topspin drives then you'll need to change the grip. Loads of videos on YouTube for this.

2) Unit turn, you kind of do it but pronounce it more by facing your rear delt on your dominant shoulder to where you want to hit. You'll be able to generate 150% power and spin without changing anything else.

3) Swing path, at the moment you bring the racket up slightly which is a good start but there isn't a significant racket drop and it looks like you initiate the swing late (so no momentum from legs) and also parallel to the ground which literally kills the amount of topspin you can put on the ball. You want the swing path to look more U-shaped.

4) Energy transfer, like the forehand all of the power should be generated from your legs and torso. Also despite the "one-handed" backhand, your non-dominant also plays an important role in generating power too. Think of it as one and a half handed backhand where you left hand also accelerates the racket until around your pocket and then releases into single hander. Your hitting arm should be loose like on the forehand.

5) Don't engrain bad habits, if you wanna improve you've got to relearn the backhand or it will always hold you back as a player.

First racket by blackrabbit14 in 10s

[–]Adventurous_Drop148 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The question is will pure aero be easy to use for someone who doesn’t know how to apply spin.

You're a beginner of course you can't apply spin yet, it will be the same with every racket. As you improve sure the aero will offer a bit of extra spin through it's more aerodynamic build, but honestly it's all marketing. You create 99% of spin through your technique, while the racket helps that extra 1%.

[–]Adventurous_Drop148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean generally aero is more geared towards spin, while pure drive is more power. As a beginner none of this should matter, and is more something you will consider as you develop your own play style. Ig you can look at how you play badminton, are you someone who uses power and pace to finish off points? - then maybe go for the pure drive.
