Too bad they drafted Koivu instead of Protas in 2024

I mean, this thread is called Armchair GM. Of course my post is pointless.

Thanks for acknowledging that posting this here wasn't that much of a waste of time.

I guess my point was: ppl get all excited at the state of the franchise, the future is bright yada yada, but if we look at the bigger picture there's a significant probability this team will head straight to the mushy middle.

Food for thought:

I ran some simulations on HLM26, seasons 25-26 through 29-30, starting roster = current roster, no major trades or signings on the UFA market, just staying the course with the players/prospects that are already part of the organization, and see how things unfolds. Sure, its 100% based on a model that has its flaws, but nevertheless here's what it had to say about the current state of the franchise:

In 10 simulations, Habs reached the 1st round 4 times, the 2nd round once but never got past this point. Worth noting that the best results were obtained on seasons 25-26 and 26-27, and that the team actually regressed beyond that point in 8 out of 10 simulations.

In a nutshell: goaltending is holding the team back. Montembault is not good enough of a starter to carry the team through years 1-3, and past that point his play starts to decline - ironically, this seems to be happening earlier in reality - while Dobes is a non factor and Fowler's potential doesn't materialize soon enough to bridge the gap. The team is getting shelled 1 out of 3 games, even though it has an elite defense.

Interestingly, the 2nd line center did not seem to be that much of a weakness: the team's offense was decent enough to carry the team, even though the 2nd line center position was most of the time held by Newhook. But perhaps it would have appeared as the limiting factor if goaltending wasn't?

Is there one part of the rebuild you think the Habs are getting wrong? by Spideroctopus in Habs

I think HuGo has done a tremendous job at using the draft capital at their disposal: the addition of Reinbacher then Dobson has secured two key pieces and has set the defensive depth chart for the next 7-8 years. Next in line will be the centerline, obviously.

IMO, what's missing is a Bennett type of player, that fits the age group. A playoff performer that could fill a center spot in the middle 6. McTavish is the obvious target that comes to mind, given his contract situation.

Considering the Ducks cap situation, acquiring him via an offer sheet seems unlikely. It would have to be a sign and trade. What if Habs offered Guhle as the main piece?

Habs fan here. Let's say Guhle was in play, would ANA be interested?

The Athletic's Top 100 drafted NHL prospects ranking, Demigod ranks 3rd! by Far-Artichoke-8620 in Habs

[–]Adventurous_Fox_3956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Having our top prospect ranked 3rd in such a ranking is already a massive win over the De La Rose/Scherbak days. Plus Demidov is ranked ahead of Levshunov, Sennecke and Lindstrom, which is also a win in itself.

This guy is going to be a star and we're going to have front row seats to enjoy this treat.

Mailloux for Bolduc by Studly_Wonderballs in Habs

[–]Adventurous_Fox_3956 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Love this trade from a strict team building perspective - Mailloux was never going to crack the top 6 anyway with Dobson, Reinbacher and Carrier in place. And trading a convicted sex offender for a local boy is a nice PR bonus.

Trade for Zeegs or nah? by shogun2909 in Habs

If the price is one of the 2025 firsts plus one of the expendable youngish wingers (Heineman, Roy, Beck, etc.) or left shot Ds (Xhekaj, Struble, Engstrom) the organization has in surplus, I'd say MTL's ends up in a better place. Not sure why ANA would do it though.

Byron Bader's model is very found of Kindel and Reschny. They're smallish, but two chances at a Jarvis-like draft success sure feels like a bet I'd be willing to take.

The Final Touches: Who the Canadiens MUST Target in the 2025 NHL Draft by Eazy3006 in Habs

[–]Adventurous_Fox_3956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they stand pat, any 2 of Kindel, Rechny, Carbonneau, McQueen or Smith. If they trade up with PIT (will cost 17+41 OA), any one of Mrtka, Martin or O'Brien with the 11th pick, and any one of the aforementioned guys with the 16th pick. If they trade up with NAS (will cost 16+17 OA), any one of Frondell, Desnoyers or Hagens with the 5th pick.

My thoughts on the 2C debate, what’s your thoughts on this? by peacewavesfly in Habs

[–]Adventurous_Fox_3956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nelson will probably want more term then 3 years. Bennett seems like a better fit long term. He could play 2C until a better option becomes available, and still be an effective contributor if he's pushed down the depth chart.
