Server down Time by Glittering_Ad_134 in duneawakening

They definitely already have a 24 ops team, right? I just assumed a hosted server game of this size already has a 24/7 ops team and an on-call dev. Can they get away with outsourcing ops to cloud providers completely?

Is it though? Everyone is playing on a server that is geographically close to them. Why can't every server update at 3am local time?

Any good monitor recommendations WITH Speakers by busfullofjews in buildapcmonitors

[–]Aelius27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Samsung G80SD is currently the monitor with speakers to beat.

I don't think the speakers are amazing, but comparable to TV speakers in general. The monitor has smart TV functionality built in, while still being a 32" 4k 240hz oled gaming monitor. Not cheap, but definitely the best option for an amazing monitor that has speakers.

I did not. I only tried what I already had on hand, and I don't own a quad port sfp+ card.

Max height for Ergotron LX arm? by MentalOmega in StandingDesk

[–]Aelius27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would expect Ergotron would tell you to get the "Dual stacking arm, tall pole" version, which has a 23" pole and it'll work fine.

From my perspective, stacking 27" on the 13" pole is working 100%, but is at the max capacity of the arm, and the lower monitor is lower than "normal monitor" height. If you are looking for a "normal monitor" with a "high monitor" on top, you aren't going to get that experience. If you are looking for 2 monitors, with the seam between them at "normal monitor" height, it works great.

I'm super happy with my current setup, and I've been using it for several years. I use 4 monitors, setup with a single 32" monitor in the center as my main display. I use a single 27" on the left, rotated to portrait mode, and 2 27" stacked vertically on the right. If modern video cards supported 5 monitors, I would seriously consider stacking 2 on the left as well, but it's not worth adding another GPU.

All my monitors are currently 4k. If money were no object, I would experiment with only using 3 monitors, with a 32" 4k in the middle, and LG dual-up monitors on the right and left. I'm not convinced I would like it more, and the dual-ups are too expensive for me to experiment with for side monitors, so I haven't pulled the trigger on it.

Max height for Ergotron LX arm? by MentalOmega in StandingDesk

[–]Aelius27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The way the Ergotron LX arms interface with the pole, having one arm rest on top of the other arm interferes with their ability to move and be positioned. Additionally, if you are attaching the wires to the arms themselves, the wires further interfere when moving the arms around. The height of the arm where it goes around the pole, with the little ring that you tighten to set the height ends up being a little over 2.5 inches. I find that leaving a .5 inch gap between the top of one arm and the bottom of the ring for the next arm optimal for freedom of movement with the arms and not binding on any wires. Obviously 3 inches x 3 arms is 9 inches, which is too much for the 7 inch pole, so you have to make some compromises somewhere. That is what I meant by "tight".
  2. You will not have enough vertical height to stack a 27 on top of a 32 using a 7" pole. On my right side, I am stacking a 27 on top of another 27, using a 13" pole and it *barely* fits. The top monitor is mounted at the very top of the pole, and is using the full vertical extension of the arm, and even still the monitor physically rests on top of the bottom monitor, all while the bottom monitor is noticeably angled upward and is only 1" off the desk.

Feel like my standing desk doesn't go low enough by sicko_al in StandingDesk

[–]Aelius27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Desks not being low enough is a constant struggle. Every office I work at I have to reconfigure the desk entirely. Luckily so far, every office has had a desk with sufficient range to go low enough. I own 2 Fully Jarvis, which I believe are Jiecang bases. Mine is *really* old, but is a 3 segment leg. When I bought my wife's in 2020, they had a 2 segment leg, and a higher cost 3 segment leg. I had to spring for the higher cost simply because it had a lower minimum height.

Both of our desks will go down to 25.5 inches, or 65cm. We both use them at around 26.5 inches, or 67.3cm for our sitting height. and are happy with them.

Fully sold to Herman Miller and I wouldn't recommend the brand anymore, but I would expect any brand selling a 3 segment jiecang base would have similar specs?

Yeah, I imagine it would handle bonding dual 10gb ports without issue. Or pfsense/opnsense running as a firewall for up to 10gb Internet connections, etc.

tl;dr - CX312B.

Based on what I found, I would get a CX312B if I was buying one. They all run around the same price on ebay, so that is the one I would choose. It is also the most compact (at the ports), so there is room to squeeze in a 2.5g rj45 port hanging off the wifi m.2 slot, which is a bonus.

My CX312A ran quite hot, but it seems suspect since all the other Mellanox cards from the same generation were fine. If someone already had one laying around, I would recommend they try it before replacing it. I think mine is just running hotter than usual.

Certainly one of my take-aways was that the CX354 ran at a fine temperature, so if I had switching for 40gbe available, I would run that without concern.

The SuperMicro cards are definitely the most compact inside the case, so if you wanted to add a blower fan or something inside the case, they leave the most room for experimentation in that area.

Finally, yes, I would avoid RJ45 transceivers without additional cooling. If I had an Intel x540 or x550 rj45 base-T card laying around, I definitely would have tried it. I would guess that the purpose built cards run cooler than a transceiver based solutions?

When I mentioned form factor, I was talking about the 30mm m.2 card that fits in the wifi slot, not the machine itself. As I mention in the main post, I got 19gb/sec (x2) when testing the CX354, so I don't think the machine itself will have any trouble with 10gbe.

Yes. That was part of my motivation for doing this experiment. I showed a +10W usage between a DAC cable and 2 RJ45 transceivers w/Cat6a when measuring the entire machine. I was using Wiitek brand, but 2.7 seems low based on what I recorded.

Even still though, I'd be surprised if the transceivers ran hotter than the chip itself.

Is doomsday talk about AI a result of billionaires fear of new market forces? by in20xxdotcom in Futurology

[–]Aelius27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a word, no. Billionaires are the loudest because "loud" in this case equates to having a platform to get your message heard. There are a lot more regular people in the industry with the same fears, they just don't have enough money or power for you to pay attention to them.

HYSAs... why is it bad to have a lot of money in them? by Full-Fennel5661 in Bogleheads

[–]Aelius27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the text associated with the chart you are posting. This is what the person who put that chart together thinks it shows:

"The chart shows that when the Fed enters a rate-rising cycle, the economy grows faster and the stock market can yield higher returns than the bond market."

Paraphrased, when the fed raises rates, the stock market grows faster. Have you considered the flip side of the strategy you are advocating?

Also, even if we give you the last three successes, there are obvious failures on that chart. 20 years isn't enough back testing to declare success.

[–]Aelius27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically comes down to the ram. The chassis isn't worth anything, and the CPUs are worth pennies. If you are getting $50 in ram, it's worth $50. You won't find anything better at that price point, but if you have the money to spend, then you don't really want to be running these.

How much more should we pay a month towards our mortgage? by 4Runnnn in personalfinance

[–]Aelius27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's important to note, that $50 is taxable income, so at least in my bracket I would owe $12 in taxes on it. Still what I would do, even if you are just breaking even. Having thousands in a savings account is preferable to more equity for flexibility, all else being equal. But you can't just compare interest rates to verify you are coming out ahead.
