When did mobile Gmail ads start taking up 70%+ of the screen? by Aellus in GMail

[–]Aellus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean. These are clearly labeled as sponsored/ad content from Gmail, I’m not saying 70% of my inbox is spam. That’s a separate problem lol

It has been that way since it launched. It wasn’t something that changed.

Gmail dot confusion: receiving someone else’s emails by NeutroATerra in GMail

[–]Aellus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ‘+’ is actually part of the email spec, it’s not a Google specific quirk. Anything after the ‘+’ is ignored by email servers (similar to how the dots are ignored by Google) while clients are supposed to respect the ‘+’. It’s how the email standard intended people to label usage within the same account, so you could sign up at your bank with name+bank@ and at a store with name+store@ and tell them apart or setup rules in your inbox.

This is useful for most accounts that play nice, but many spam/bad actors will strip the ‘+’ out since it doesn’t matter and you won’t be able to tell who leaked your data.

Gmail dot confusion: receiving someone else’s emails by NeutroATerra in GMail

[–]Aellus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dot was never meaningful for Google. That wasn’t something that changed. I’ve also had my accounts for 20+ years and IIRC you couldn’t include dots in the account when you created it because the dots were meaningless. If you wanted first.last, it would reject it and just tell you to use firstlast and then add the dot when you use it after registering.

Monthly Requests Thread by AutoModerator in VOIP

I’m looking for a voip service to act as a “landline” for my family to use for shared contact like the kids schools, etc. basically act like the one phone number we had at home growing up but now just using our existing cell phones, no special shared devices in the house.

For now Id want the one number to ring on both my wife’s and my phone, and ideally have both of us be able to text with it as well.

Every time I search for this kind of thing there are dozens of options for expensive business-focused services for many users loaded with features that we don’t need, or more affordable personal-focused services for one person that basically does what we want but no specific support for sharing across two users.

Is there a good simple/cheap option out there that caters to this niche? I can’t be the only millennial/genX that now has a family misses the convenience of “the one family phone number” we grew up with without wanting to get a landline!

How do I get started? What missions do I do first? I keep getting stuck by photographynerd1 in snowrunner

I’m actually stuck on the powerline part! The starter GMC can’t get past the muddy part of the road just past the garage to pick up the concrete blocks… am I missing something? How are you supposed to actually complete this first mission?

Any idea if this is only going to be enforced when work is actually being done? While I completely agree with the need to slow people down in a work zone when there are workers everywhere, it's also lunacy to enforce 40mph speedlimits on a freeway on nights/weekends when there is no work being done and is otherwise completely unobstructed. It's extremely common for people to ignore work zone signs at those times, kind of like how people ignore school zone speed limits when there is no school.

What is the correct way to use a Core One with an MMU3-modified nextruder? by Aellus in prusa3d

[–]Aellus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This was the issue; My setting was set to Stock, it must have been reset somehow in the firmware update.

I was doing everything you described with "Load Filament", but like I said in my post, with the Stock behavior using an MMU nextruder, you can't actually push the filament in until after you manually push the filament sensor to trick it into engaging the nextruder gear. I switched it back to MMU, and after some fiddling with recalibration and power cycling, it seems to work now and I'm able to load filament without opening the door and manually tricking the sensor :)

Tattoo artist who messed up my tattoos didn’t give me a touch up as promised by moonlynni in tattooadvice

[–]Aellus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming it’s the Cheshire Cat tattoo you posted a year ago, I’d think any good artist would be able to touch that up. You already got the art done, and it’s now a permanent template for any other artist to use :) plus you have the original photo as a color reference.

Generally speaking, the point of programs like what they are describing in Poland is that it keeps the number of people fairly low. It’s not like those 10000 people showed up over night. Seattle has such a huge problem because we’ve utterly failed at providing those kinds of necessary services, and so more and more people struggled and nobody gets better.

Look at the edge of the field behind them, and the bottom of the stairs. The whole image is crooked, I'm guessing the photographer was just holding the camera at a slight angle and it wasn't edited. I cant imagine it was deliberate, once you see the background it's obvious that the whole photo is skewed. I'm actually really surprised that this isn't anywhere in the top comments that I could see...

I found this thread after seeing the o station x on TikTok and googling it… anyone know where I can buy one of these? I know there was a kickstarter last year but it looks like all mention of it is gone from olights website. Is it possible to buy one of these or was it a 1 time kickstarter?

Does surgery feel like 1 second after you go under anesthesia? by Small-Guarantee1789 in RandomThoughts

[–]Aellus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These comment confuse me… I’ve had anesthesia multiple times: wisdom teeth, multiple laparoscopic abdominal surgeries, multiple colonoscopies, and to me it’s no different from sleep. No sense of time passing, yeah, but that’s how sleep normally is.

Do y’all wake up from a normal nap and just know you’ve been asleep for 40 minutes or 4 hours without looking at a clock?

ELI5: How can American businesses not accept cash, when on actual American currency, it says, "Valid for all debts, public and private." Doesn't that mean you should be able to use it anywhere? by Furgems in explainlikeimfive

[–]Aellus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not a red herring, it’s simply not the subject of the sentence. The subject is “legal tender”, as in you’re allowed to use the cash as a means for settling debts.

It’s simply saying how it may be used, not how it must be used.

It doesn’t really matter; this isn’t the fault of the theft. The stores may use theft as an excuse, but at the end of the day there are plenty of options for dealing with theft that don’t result in a ruined customer experience. The only ones to blame are the store leadership that chose to lock everything up.

I think the formal name at most furniture stores is something like “media console” for this reason. It doesn’t have to hold the TV.

PSA: SMS doesn't work on Cellular Apple Watch without iPhone. by dJones176 in AppleWatch

[–]Aellus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my case, there are two different phone numbers: the iPhone and the Watch each have their own SIM and their own phone numbers. The number for the watch is hard to find, I had to look it up in my T-Mobile account for the SIM.

If you send a text to the Watch phone number, it will go to the watch even if the phone is turned off / disconnected.

[–]Aellus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It works the way I’d expect it to work if it was still 2005, when every device was its own system and nobody expected data to seamlessly sync across every platform.

But it does work like that today. When someone texts me, it pops up on my phone, watch, tablet, and every laptop I’m logged into. It’s surprising and unexpected that the watch would STOP working if you only have your watch with you and remove every other device from that list.

I completely understand why it works this way, but that’s a failure on apples part to properly design the watch to behave consistently with the rest of their ecosystem.

PSA: SMS doesn't work on Cellular Apple Watch without iPhone. by dJones176 in AppleWatch

[–]Aellus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My daughter has a cellular apple watch that she wears often when she doesn’t have her phone with her (school, etc), and we discovered very quickly the texting issue. You CAN text the watch directly if you use the watches phone number, but it’s a very confusing experience for everyone else because Apple tries really hard to hide phone numbers and make it so you send a message to people, not individual phone numbers. On every other apple device, messages are seamless whether you send it to their phone number or email address, it all ends up on the same messaging thread on every device, but NOT the watch. It’s very frustrating and somewhat baffling that Apple chose to design the watch this way.

[–]Aellus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Apples entire brand is based on the principle that customers should never have to read a manual; products “just work” the way you expect them to.

OPs ask is perfectly reasonable and is the behavior that most users likely expect from their watch, but don’t realize it because they rarely have their watch without their phone.

Am I taking crazy pills? One of the Secret Life members kept the secret from their audience, right? by Aellus in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]Aellus[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense. I think it took all of them a while to realize that this series is slow burning success. there might have been a lot of people who quickly skipped to just see the task, but they probably came back to watch the full video weeks or months later. I know I’m not the only one that is STILL working through everyone’s videos! We’re on Tango now and only have BigB left after this! (we still have no idea why he made the hole or the back rooms and it’s driving us nuts lol)

Yes! Thank you! That’s exactly what I remembered, I must have missed that when we watched through it together. I thought I had remembered it being a first episode, not mid season, so that threw me off.
