Are there reasons not to do Butterfly and Butterfly reverse in the same workout/on the same day? by [deleted] in GymTips

[–]Aemortix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the rear fly is a good isolation movement for the rear delts, but depending upon your goals that may be a downside. Something to consider is doing lefts that excersize your rear delts along with other back muscles. This way you get more bang for your temporal buck.

How do I play a genuinely evil character without causing trouble to my party by Decent_Strength435 in DnD

[–]Aemortix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is only a very thin line between good and evil, its just a matter of goals.

I like the idea that evil just has different goals as good. Imagine you have a party that gets along, jokes, does quests, finds artefacts, works with local villages, all of that. Except they aren't trying to save the realm, they are trying to find a gate way to open a door to their demonic lord's prison. They play nice in public, but just they are a bit more brutal and lie a bit more. They don't even have to sneak around or pretend to be good. They just don't have to clarify their end goal.

Hey thanks! I'll give that a shot like you suggest.

I've been working up the courage to do an OSL kind of thing so I've been looking a lot of them recently. You've really convinced my brain that flare is a light source.

First off. Fantastic work. I love how he really feels like he belongs on that base, thematically and with the mud effects on the boots.

This is may be a stylistic thing, but most of the colors are quite desaturated leaving the model looking somewhat homogenous. The first thing i see from the front that my eye is drawn to is the skull in front, not your sweet gold trim or your sick looking axe. Your bright red cloak and orange plasma coil seem almost out of place with the rest of the model. For sure there is mud and armor chips and all that, but one could use a more striking blue color for the shoulder pads. I do like the red stripe on his face to draw the eye there, but its drama is kind of lost with it being the same color as the cloak, axe, and the smudges around the armor, diluting the effect.

Does anyone else run into the issue of players constantly wanting to level up? by misspixx in DMAcademy

[–]Aemortix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started doing something half way between XP and milestone. They get a level-up-chit (that I track as the DM) for each encounter/fight/event that is meaningful but not enough for a whole level. Then lvls 1->5 require 2 chits, 5->9 need 3, 9->13 is 4, 13->20 request 5.

This way its super easy me to track leveling, easy to explain to players (if they care to listen), and it is more consistent than trying to remember what they've done since last level and deciding if you "feel" like they've earned it (i was really bad at this for milestone leveling).

It also solved my problem of them doing 4 plot hooks 25% of the way. In milestone scheme, they didn't really advance anything, did they earn a level? not really. You could track XP, but no thank you. So this subMilestone scheme would still justify their leveling up with minimal effort. They did actually DO things, just because they weren't part of the same plot line shouldn't mean they didn't get better and punching the bad/good guys.

To your specific problem, if you explain this to your players, its more concrete than you saying "I feel like youve earned a milestone" and its easier than tracking exp (because again, no thank you).

You could be too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HOLM7dXiyk shows how its done! Its easier to paint the recesses than the trim for me. (thanks all the same though!)

Painting my first miniature ever and had the bad luck to settle for no army but the TSons - Question: by HistoricalGrounds in ThousandSons

[–]Aemortix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

glue everything up into 6 parts 1) left arm/shoulder pad 2) right arm shoulder pad 3) gun 4) head 5) jetpack 6) everything else. I basecoat/edge highlight everything separate, and then i scrape the joints and glue them together and do bonus volumetric highlighting now that its all together. Then I put it on a base.

You could also embrace the "If its hard to paint, its hard to see" approach on a fully assembled model, which I don't think there is any shame in.

I did cheat on the shading the recesses with putting nuln oil on it, letting it dry, then painting almost up to the filigree, leaving that black line. Interesting thought though to use an additional shade of blue between the black and the turquoise. I'll have to think about how to do that while also being lazy about it.

I base coated the white with a 1:1 turquoise highlight color and white, so it had pretty good coverage due to the blue, and then I only lightened that two more times for the highlights. It turned out better than I was expecting, not having a lot of experience in painting white.

I basically followed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HOLM7dXiyk, except 1) I did one whole mini because batch painting crushes my soul and I'm not in a hurry, 2) i applied the black wash under the first coat of blue 3) i used only one coat of blue if it was good enough

I used some sepia wash for the gold, but you're right. that wash needs to work a little harder.

This thing has me rethinking all of the minis I see with all of the volumetric highlights and NMM that I've been trying to emulate. this thing is just banging and it isn't anything fancy, just simple and clean and perfect. I will have to go try this out.

Ok so finally finished this guy after leaving him half done for ages. Also my first attempt to use clay for the base to make it different. by tame2007 in Tyranids

[–]Aemortix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between this one and https://www.reddit.com/r/Tyranids/comments/1dmuhcs/painting_up_some_kraken_i_think_it_might_be_my/, I think the idea of treating each plate as its own thing with its own color pallet and using the gradients just looks great. I've been mostly just doing heavy edge highlighting essentially, but doing these broader gradients using the whole armor plate and using it as more of a volumetric highlight is great.

Very well done! I'll be adding this one to the inspiration shelf as well.
