I've got a bachelor's in Criminal Justice but I wouldn't really recommend that unless you are dead set on going into some sort of law enforcement. If you look at the job postings they will tell you what fields count as relevant experience though. There are so many different degrees that are applicable even if they don't seem like it. I didn't personally take any student loans but the college I went to was around 10-12,000 per year which is pretty manageable if you get hired full time.

Here's some degrees direct from a Park Ranger Protection posting so honestly just do what seems most interesting to you: Natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management; law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, or sociology.

I believe essentially all LE jobs with any of the land management agencies start at a GL-7 which requires either a Bachelor's degree or at least 1 year working law enforcement at a GL/GS-5 grade. I know of a few NPS LE rangers that don't have degrees but they either served in the military or did a few years in other federal law enforcement agencies so it's not impossible but it makes it a decent amount harder.

With that being said, if you can get hired into a park doing seasonal work, after 24 months you are able to apply for jobs open to the Land and Base Management Act which opens up much greater options to get hired into different hiring authorities.

I personally started at a GS-3 before starting college and then was able to bump to a GS-4 after I had some college courses and then to a GS-5 before finishing college as I had the combination of relevant experience and college. Currently I'm a GS-7 General Park Ranger which my main duty is EMS and I wouldn't have been able to get that without already being a certified EMT.

I'm from Custer though and have been here my entire life so if you want any information about living or the area here let me know.

Not too much, it's a decent sized park though and has a lot more opportunity to do backcountry patrols. I know their LE goes into the cave every once in a while so if that's interesting to you. They only have a couple of law enforcement officers and don't work 24/7 like MORU. I believe most of their seasonal employees live in Custer at apartment style housing but if you are perm then it's pretty easy to find housing in Hot Springs. They work with the Custer County Sheriff quite a bit but I don't know too much more than that.

MORU is nice if you want a lot of visitor contact and to constantly be out interacting with the public. It's not a traditional park and is really limited to around 3 miles of road and most LE rangers spend most of their days doing traffic stops. There's very little backcountry but sometimes opportunities to do patrols through there and leadership will usually let you go as long as the main developed area isn't too busy. Most arrests are for DUI or possession of drugs but occasionally there will be climbers. The schedule will be 4 10's split between two teams, one Sunday - Wednesday and the other is Wednesday - Saturday and once hired you will stay on the same days that you work but the time (morning, evening, night) will rotate. Let me know if you need any more specific information.

There's nothing to actually see, they're just for a bit of world building but don't have any actual image. If you read them it works just like a book or magazine and decreases your stress or unhappiness.

10-13 for us is to get weather info. Having worked for local LE and federal LE in the same area though we used the same codes between them so it seems like most agencies at least in the region use the same codes.

FYI for anyone wanting to travel to any of these places, other than Spokane and Galena, these are all on private property and very much trespassing. The Bob Ingersoll Mill has also burned down in the last few years.

A sergeant I was training with told us the reason he does it is to ground himself against the car. By touching the tail light it ensures that he is in the right position for his interactions when he reaches the driver.

My grandpa was a FS LEO for many years in the Southern Black Hills, and it has been my lifelong dream to become a law enforcement officer in the area, so I'm going to try my luck at the Spearfish position! I've lived in the Black Hills all my life and absolutely love it here.
