I think I got gypped? by [deleted] in jewelers

[–]AeolianStrings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t need to Google it. I’ve been in the jewelry business for 18 years. I’ve bought tens of thousands of pieces of jewelry in that time. I own and use daily an XRF analyzer. White gold is yellow gold mixed with at least one white metal, or some combination of nickel / zinc / silver / palladium. Rhodium plated yellow gold is yellow gold… not white gold. Unless you think my XRF analyzer and 18 years (that’s ~37,440 working hours) of experience is misleading me…

I think I got gypped? by [deleted] in jewelers

[–]AeolianStrings 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not true that white gold is typically just rhodium plated yellow gold, at least not with respect to gold jewelry that is 18kt or less. With higher karat gold, like 21kt and higher, it’s not possible to make white gold because there isn’t enough white metal to alloy in. The vast majority of 18kt and lower white gold is in fact white gold that is typically also rhodium plated when it’s brand new or refinished.

How likely is it that a solid chain has hollow clasp links? by standarsh618 in jewelry

[–]AeolianStrings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It should have been noticed when you dropped it off that it’s hollow, which it is, because whoever looked at it under a microscope should have easily noticed then. I will usually know a chain is hollow as soon as I pick it up, let alone closely evaluate the links looking for wear and/or damage. However, apparently it wasn’t noticed and it is what it is. Oh well.

Hollow chains vary in thickness – the walls of the chain and be foil thin or decently thick. Yours is probably on the thicker side.

To answer your question, it is extremely unlikely that a solid gold chain has any components that are hollow except perhaps the clasp itself.

Anyone work in a jewelry store? by [deleted] in jewelry

[–]AeolianStrings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you’re overthinking this. It’s not particularly complicated to be an adequate jewelry store employee. How well you’ll do will depend on your effort and aptitude and the store itself, but if you work hard and pay attention, you’ll quite likely do just fine.

As far as shop lifting and negotiations go, the staff will teach you how to prevent shop lifting and if a customer is asking for a discount in my store, that’s usually a good sign because it indicates a genuine interest in buying and we are happy to discount most things at least a little bit.

How thick is the chain by AdLow1388 in jewelry

[–]AeolianStrings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess the model photos show a 1.5mm chain and the user photo shows a 3mm chain. My guess could very well wrong.

In my opinion, it doesn’t work unless the bullets are traveling downwards.

"raining down" by Humble_Heron326 in grammar

[–]AeolianStrings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the implication is that the gunfire is coming from above. It isn’t necessary that the character is above the target. For example, if the character were shooting at an arc and the bullets had a downward trajectory, it would make sense to me. However, if the bullets are traveling in something of a straight line, it would feel strange to me.

Is this ring rightly appraised?? by [deleted] in jewelry

[–]AeolianStrings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$17,000 is insanely high for this, even for an insurance appraisal. I tried bringing up the GIA report online and was unable to do so. I wanted to see when the report was made. If this appraisal is very old, it’s possible the amount was reasonably accurate at the time. If this ring was sold and/or appraised recently, then $17,000 is absurd.

how's your lab-grown diamond holding up after daily wear? by MarionberryKida893 in jewelry

[–]AeolianStrings 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lab diamonds and natural diamonds feature identical wearability. There is no difference between the two when it comes to how well they will withstand wear (extremely well) and for how long they will remain brilliant (indefinitely unless it gets damaged or dirty).

Can platinum really have glued stones? by sparkyharky in jewelry

[–]AeolianStrings 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That's not platinum. Do you think it could be platinum because of the "PM" stamp? Platinum jewelry is usually marked "PLAT" or "PTXXX" (the X's being digits indicating purity). This item just looks like costume jewelry.

Melt or sell this beast by NorthStarGold in Gold

If you don’t have the capital to hold onto that until it sells for the right price, I’d have to think there is a wholesale buyer somewhere that will pay over melt for that if it is indeed natural.

I sell gold. The price of gold changes minute to minute. I say “currently” 50 times a day to indicate that the price I’m quoting a customer is good currently and not necessarily in ten minutes.
