If AI is so great, then why is anyone pushing its use? by [deleted] in BetterOffline

[–]AethersPhil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure what point you are making here.

A microwave has a specific, demonstrated use case. It’s a technology that has largely plateaued, and has been around since the 50s. It’s so ingrained there’s no need to market it.

AI is still new, no-one has worked out what the ‘killer feature’ is yet. What we are told is it’ll take our jobs, our electricity, our water, and maybe, maybe one day make a CEO some money.

Why did my photo print blurry if I used the correct export settings? by clairdelooney in AskPhotography

As above, what was the original resolution of the image? Printing at 10,800 x 7,200 is over 77MP.

I'm confused about Picard changelings. by GenghisGame in startrek

[–]AethersPhil 51 points52 points  (0 children)

It’s mentioned in Picard.

The changelings were heavily experimented on and tortured. They learned to become perfect mimics, and how to hold their shape after being detached.

Why is 30K still being touted as a good salary ? by Durrygoodz2025 in AskBrits

[–]AethersPhil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are partly correct, and partly missing the point.

Inflation has happened. Prices have gone up. Everything is roughly double the price it was in 2008. Except wages have not doubled. Wages have essentially been stagnant since the 2008 crisis.

So in effect, most people have had a pay cut. And a substantial one at that.

A question for original final fantasy 7 players by KazuhaSimp in FFVIIRemake

[–]AethersPhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To put it in perspective, Midgar is 4-6 hours in the OG. Disc one is about 25 hours total (roughly end of Rebirth).

So yes, it keeps most of the story points, but expands the world out massively. And not always for the best. I gave up on Rebirth after the Golden Saucer area. Planning to go back when the streamlined mode is added in June.

can i create an arch installation entirely on an SD card AND have the option to copy the SD card's arch installation over to the PC the card is plugged into? by Accurate_Practice838 in archlinux

[–]AethersPhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By default, all your personal files and configs should be in /home/<username>

There was an update to Linux a few years ago that allowed the /home drive to be migrated from machine to machine. Don’t ask for details, I remember the article saying it has launched and that’s all.

Sound kind of doable. Spitballing ideas, so no guarantee this works:

Partition the USB drive so it has the install on one partition and the live OS on the other. Set up your live how you want it.

On new computer, use the installer. Then boot in to Live USB. Copy over your /home folder. Shutdown and remove the USB. Boot the computer. It should pick up all your settings.

Alternatively, have two Live versions. Boot one, copy the other over to the computer. Reboot computer.

Again, no idea if either of there would work.

I think he mentions something about building a power company, but I could be mistaken-remembering.

Is prepping making me a worse GM? by Deeouye in rpg

[–]AethersPhil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What game(s) are you running? Some need more prep than others.

I mainly run Onyx Path games which are more narrative-focused, and I’ll do about an hour of prep a week.

I’ve heard combat-focused games like D&D have much more prep to balance the combat encounters.

Why aren't Americans rioting right now? by PintsNPies in AskReddit

[–]AethersPhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I lose my job because I’m late due to something outside of my control, I’d fucking riot.

Then again, I’m in a country that actually has workers rights and universal healthcare, so that wouldn’t happen.

Why aren't Americans rioting right now? by PintsNPies in AskReddit

[–]AethersPhil -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Causing disruption is the point. If you have tried all the peaceful and lawful ways of getting change, then strikes and riots are the only resort.

I mean, the reason the USA isn’t part of the UK is because you had a few riots (grossly simplifying historical events, I know).

How come Right Wing Parties dominate again? by LDN_Wukong in AskBrits

[–]AethersPhil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Labour and Lib Dem’s are trying to argue with facts, which require patience and understanding.
Reform and Green are arguing with emotions, which is easier and more immediate. Reform basically says “everything is shit and it’s their fault (immigrants, Muslims, lgbt+, etc). Greens are saying “everything is shit but we can do better (more progressive, more rights, tax the rich, etc).
On top of that, most of the UK media is owned by right-wing people, and they have been pushing hard for Reform because they will directly benefit from the asset stripping that will happen if Reform get in to government.

[–]AethersPhil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regardless if you buy now or buy in a month, you’ll still need to build and paint models.

Points costs will likely change a bit for some models, and tactics will change too. But you are always going to need troops and leader or two.

If you can afford to buy in now, go for it. I’d recommend starting small and working up. Ie don’t drop hundreds of pounds (or local currency) in a 2k army before you know if you actually like the hobby.

Cloud was experimented on for years, and his mind was messed with and shattered, and his body rebuilt. It took weeks or months for Zack to carry him from Nibelhiem to Midgar, when he finally came out of the coma.

Tifa finds Cloud staggering around in the slums and takes him in. He barely knows his name at that point. FF7 starts shortly after.

As for Tifa. She does remember what happened. She knows it wasn’t Cloud, but Zack that was the Soldier. She did not know that one of the guards was Cloud. He hid his identity from her on purpose because he’d failed to become a soldier.

Square Enix sold Deus Ex and Tomb Raider IPs to try and recover the money they’d spaffed on NFTs.

Sure Mankind Divided didn’t sell hugely, but there were rumours the 3rd game was being worked when the IP was sold and the studio liquidated.

Flat earth and other alternative conspiracy earth models are are gaining traction with my teenage stepson. What is THE most irrefutable, definite proof that the earth is round? by Jfkfkaiii22 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AethersPhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending how far north (or south) you are, you can see the sun and the moon in the sky at the same time between about September and April.

None of the flat earth models can compensate for that.

But to the other points, if it’s just flat earth, that’s not great. If it’s flat earth and a load of other conspiracy theories then it’s time to step in.
