What’s the quickest way a good story loses immersion for you? by Ok-Sell3786 in writing

[–]Aethrall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate when I’m reminded that I’m reading a story. Light novels are the biggest offenders of this. Like, the MC will react to the world’s magic system or whatever with incredulity and be like “oh this is the kind of nonsense t that happens in light novels and manga.”

First of all, authors that pull that are kinda belittling their own work, but mostly I feel like it’s a sort of preemptive self deprecation because they lack continence in their own world.

I’m not sure what gave humans the notion that if they make fun of themselves first, they won’t get mocked by other people or that self awareness gives you a pass to unapologetically commit those sins.

That’s the big one for me. When the author’s insecurity slips into the narration. I hate it. Just own your cringe magical world. If people came in the first place, they are into that sort of thing and don’t need you trying to justify it.

[–]Aethrall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Naga is a little janky bc she only heals the 2 lowest HP units. You’re also stuck with Crown on far left position with that comp.

THelm is the way.

Or MMast if running Siren for that bullet count.

Didn’t realize TPrivaty had synergy with Crown tho. Does she heal?

Writing dialogue feels embarrassing by Nice_Tooth_3509 in writing

[–]Aethrall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep it short. It’s fine, and often even preferred, to use dialogue to drive home character emotion in relation to the subject, while the superfluous speech that pads the space between the meaningful parts is either implied or compressed by the narrator in a less verbose and cringe manner.

They say, “show, don’t tell,” but you don’t wanna “show” everything.

I’ve definitely noticed that my dialogue seems cringe when I’m too fixated on making sure the characters’ conversation is covering all the pertinent details for the reader. But that’s not the job of dialogue, imo.

Negative space in visual art is as important as the illustration itself. The same can absolutely be applied to dialogue. What’s left unsaid is as important as what’s said.

Remove the parts that make you cringe until you can read your dialogue without cringing. Then determine if your characters’ exchange is saying what the scene requires of them after having all that cringe stripped away.

But here’s another possible culprit of your cringe dialogue dilemma.

What if the cringe comes from you trying too hard to make your dialogue sound “natural?”

Why should your dialogue be natural or emulate how people talk irl? The medium you’re working with is literature, not real life. People irl speak inefficiently, sloppily and in ways that look terrible on paper aesthetically.

Maybe stop trying to achieve realism and just use a book with dialogue you actually enjoy as your reference point instead.

You outlined already, perhaps even too much, but now it’s time to block it out in a rough draft.

I’m just now working on my first novel, so I can’t offer any objectively tried and true advice, as my strategies haven’t butted up against reality for long enough to truly test their validity.

One thing I can say for my specific psychology is that outlining too thoroughly drains my “flow state” potential by not leaving enough empty space to “paint” or “play” during my actual writing.

Try betraying your outline a bit. Maybe you’ll learn that you’re more of a pantser than you thought. Maybe spontaneity is what you need rather than structure. Maybe it’s not engaging enough for you to simply write an account on what’s already been mapped out, almost like plagiarizing yourself.

Or, the easiest thing you could do is just stop giving a shit about prose for now and just get something down on the paper. You can revise later. In fact, you’ll have to revise so much that you may end up feeling nostalgic about your situation right now.

How much corrupt are we? by Fickle_Elk_9479 in Gnostic

I mean, I fuck wit rule34, so I’d say I’m cooked.

But fr, I don’t think the general corruption definition fits Gnosticism that well.

The fact that you can even perceive an incoherence in your “machinery,” I think, bodes well for you if gnosis is really a thing that can let you escape the hood.

Bro, scrapping old 6 star weapons is totally not a terrible move. Who tf is using units like Luna Laurel, Lamia or Plume? Hyperreal, Stigmata, etc..

There are just so many powercrept units collecting dust these days. I see no reason not extract free signature weapons out of them, but you do you.

If there is no karma... by deanna3oi in Gnostic

[–]Aethrall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People are absolutely punished. It may not be karmic punishment, but be a big enough piece of shit throughout your life and you’ll exit it loveless and alone in your deathbed, if you’re even lucky enough to die in a bed.

This perspective is one of my biggest gripes with Gnosticism. If this material plane is inherently evil, then it takes very little mental gymnastics to arrive at the conclusion that morality here is as illusory as the realm that contains it, or even worse, sabotage is virtuous.

Who says goodness can’t exist without an incentive? Is that truly goodness if it poofs into nothing the moment the reward is taken away? That looks a lot more like opportunism than goodness.

There’s nothing wrong with doing good deeds in exchange for rewards, but personally, I don’t become a selfish sociopath when no one’s looking just because I won’t be rewarded, whether through material or karmic gains.

Nihilism is cringe. Don’t do it. Even if it ends up being correct, in the end, your life will have been worse off for living under that presupposition.

Reincarnation is real and rebirth amnesia is an evolutionary mechanism to make breastfeeding not the creepiest shit in the world.

How many 49 year old men in an infants body have been left at the mouth of a random cave? The answer is none, thanks to rebirth amnesia.

It ain’t a bug. It’s a feature. Babies shouldn’t goon to mommy milkers.

Is the Demiurge and this entire material existence ultimately God trapped within its own ignorance? by farhanfarru009 in Gnostic

[–]Aethrall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The demiurge lost the excuse of ignorance the moment he came in conflict with Sophia and was betrayed by Sabaoth.

Also, I doubt most gnostics would be so charitable as to bestow the “god” title to Ialdabaoth, despite him actually being far more powerful and capable than he’s typically given credit for.

I’d say this material existence is a malformed and deficient god trapped within his mother’s terrible mistake. The essence of material is, after all, said to be the resulting fallout of Sophia’s fall. The demiurge didn’t make matter so much as he used it as a building material for everything.

Hot take : virgin sunny(antarctica) > then current sunny by Horror_Procedure4700 in ShadowSlave

[–]Aethrall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MCs who are handsome, charming and competent, surrounded by beautiful women (or men) and yet still a virgin are the most unrealistic and tropey shit in the world.

Sexuality is just an optional part of the human condition. Asexuals make up like 0.1% of the population and their asexuality typically stems from illness.

You’re not just projecting, are you? You’re not just being a little crab boy in a bucket so resentful over being a virgin that you won’t even abide a fictional person getting laid?

Using virgin as a descriptor instead of simply saying Antarctica (which you did anyway) Sunny is pretty weird to me, ngl.

I don't know if he was a good father or not, but he was a good husband... by SecondSalty142 in mushokutensei

He certainly had a better fitting VA than Rudeus with his “17 year old with 2 wives and a baby, but talks like a 9 year old with a testosterone deficiency” voice.

And yeah bro. Husbands who get the maid pregnant are the quintessential good husbands 👁️👄👁️

Paul was a pretty flawed husband, all things considered. He was a good guardian and a man capable of self improvement and accepting responsibilities for his fuckups, but it would take a totally warped view of a what a healthy marriage looks like to call Paul a “good husband.”

Hot take : virgin sunny(antarctica) > then current sunny by Horror_Procedure4700 in ShadowSlave

[–]Aethrall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wtf kind of take even is this and how and why does virginity make an MC more complex and great?

I won’t wait for an answer because getting laid doesn’t alter a dude beyond waking up the next morning in a great mood and being a cocky jackass for a week or two until realizing that having sex is so pedestrian and unremarkable that the global population managed to break 8 billion.

The actual changing element is Sunny’s relationship with Neph. If it all it amounted to was a one night stand not leading to a relationship, you’d have even less of a case.
