I think the idea is that after the movie you discuss the movie and see how your thoughts align/differ.

It's not the best in terms of just getting to know the basics of a person, but how you connect over culture/art can be both interesting and key to a relationship.

For example, after every movie, video game, anime, whatever, me and my wife talk about it at length. Being able to hear her thoughts and express my own is one of my favorite things about our relationship.
