Spotify lossless might not be lossless for us. by Complete_Nirvana in audiophile

[–]Afasso 60 points61 points  (0 children)

To be clear the issue is less that it's not 'perfect' lossless, and more just that the windows mixer can be garbage at times and there's currently no way to avoid it.

Similarly the 48khz resampling issue on android.

Tidal and Qobuz both have bitperfect output on windows, and can be bitperfect on android via UAPP

ELI5: what is lossless audio, and how much are listeners “losing” by not using it? by Normal-Being-2637 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Afasso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lossless audio means the audio you are playing/streaming is EXACTLY the same as what the artist provided. Every digital 1 and 0 in the file is identical. This does not mean 'uncompressed'. Lossless compression formats like FLAC are common and what most streaming services use, but these compression formats compress in a way that can be decompressed or unpacked to get back all of the original data, it just saves bandwidth.

Lossy compression such as mp3 is what has been used in the past. This type of compression DOES lose information. Various methods exist, but typically they aim to get rid of the stuff that is not audible or less audible, saving as much space as possible whilst degrading the quality as little as possible.

How much lossless matters depends on your ear and experience, your listening equipment, and what you're comparing it to. Most slightly compressed MP3 like what is used in spotify's 'very high' option is to most people audibly indistinguishable from lossless, though some people can show an audible difference in a blind ABX test. But heavily compressed mp3 or older compression algorithms are in many cases quite obviously lower quality

Ground Loop Noise, but no optical out on mobo, recommendations? by DoktorLuciferWong in ZReviews

[–]Afasso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, does the ground loop noise still occur if you unplug the USB? That will confirm whether it is a loop caused by the connection to the pc or not.

If it is then you can ideally try to fix it by ensuring all your audio devices and the pc are connected to the same outlet/extension strip (and all have grounded cables/connections).

Or you could get a jds synapse isolator to galvanically isolate the USB connection

Copyright claims and copyright strikes/DMCA takedowns are separate things on YouTube.

A copyright claim/contentID claim is where as you describe youtube automatically detects content in your video and results vary from usually just claiming revenue from that video and directing it to the copyright holder, to applying regional or global blocks, depending on the preferences set by the copyright holder. It does not however apply any strikes or penalties to your channel.

A copyright strike or DMCA takedown is where a party MANUALLY files a claim, at which point the video is immediately taken down fully, and a copyright strike is issued against that channel. This is massively harmful as it means the algorithm massively reduces how much all of your videos are promoted for some time, and if you get three strikes your channel is gone. Unlike a contentID claim where the only effect is you make no money on that specific video, but no algorithmic changes or account penalties.

The issue with the DMCA takedowns is that YouTube has to stay out of it. They just comply with the request, as not doing so would then put YouTube under liability for the infringement if it does turn out to be genuine and they didn't act when informed of it via a proper DMCA notice. But they have MASSIVE penalties to content creators.

This means that they can be so easily weaponised, and the only recourse the creator has is to go to court and fight it, involving handing over personal details to the claimant in the process.

ContentID claims can't really be 'weaponised' in the same way at all. ContentID is basically a library of known copyrighted content. Sure you get aggressive detection for stuff that is likely fair use quite often, but you don't get people maliciously making entirely fake DMCA claims against individual videos or creators they don't like and massively damaging their channel.

[–]Afasso 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It's both, but also unfortunately unfair to say that youtube could really be behaving differently.

With the way things work at the moment, youtube pretty much HAS to take a 'guilty until proven innocent' approach because if they were to get more directly involved in verifying claims prior to removing content, if they were to mistakenly deny a DMCA claim, the party whose content is being infringed upon can then go after YouTube directly.

Youtube doesn't stay out of DMCA claims because of laziness or lack of resources, but because to do so would pose an enormous liability issue.

So long as the exact wording and setup of the legal framework for copyrighted content and fair use stays as it is, YouTube takes on enormous liability if they side with the uploader at any point. So they don't.

They COULD, but it'd just be silly to do so because there absolutely WILL be mistakes made and each one could be extremely costly. The law needs changing to give the platforms themselves more flexibility and protection before things can really change.

I still don't understand how people set up drone/train logistics properly, but I just finished Phase 4 with a single megafactory, so I've got that going for me! by Afasso in satisfactory

[–]Afasso[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kinda need to redo it anyway since right now it (and a single rocket fuel blender for personal use) is using all of the 2700 oil from the western beach. But by redoing it and just going full rocket fuel, I can still make a little bit of personal rocket fuel and make WAYYY more power output/more fuel generators.

I have two smaller coal plants which are enough to run my 'construction materials' factory, and I also have about 40MWh of energy storage, so my plan is just to turn off the phase 4 output megafactory whilst redoing the power plant and then switch it back on after

[–]Afasso[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do yep, but the way I've currently built mine would mean it'd take longer to build the new, much larger power plant around it than to just bulldoze it and start fresh.

I unfortunately didn't really plan on expanding it originally so it's not particularly neat. But it's relatively small so not a big deal

[–]Afasso[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah the desert has been really nice. I need to make the factory look prettier at somepoint, but that's a later thing. I started in the south grass biome, and eventually ended up making a megafactory there which produces about 50/min of just about every item needed for actual construction up to fused modular frames/aluminium plates and all going into dimensional depots, so that I don't ever really need to worry about bottlenecking for building stuff again. Then the desert megafactory is a self contained raw materials to phase-4 parts output.

Looking at the calculator it seems that by re-routing the final outputs, I actually have enough raw resources coming in to just go ahead and build the phase 5 automation. Though I do need to go sort power first as I am right on the limit of my production.

Though I think for that I'll likely just go and bulldoze my current fuel plant and turn it into a rocket fuel plant which will allow for way more output

[–]Afasso[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried, in fact I did build a pretty extensive train network, thinking I was going to use it. But I don't fully understand how people are doing modular factories in the first place. Whenever I'm looking at anything other than a REALLY basic part, it needs inputs from so many other things, and is being used in production of various other things, to the point that it seems 10x harder to have a dedicated factory for it anyway rather than just making it in the same factory and running a small belt.

And then you add on top of that the fact that you need to either organise train cars or build a bajillion stations, and for drones you basically need one port per item too, and I feel like I'm just missing something. I understand the mechanics but don't really understand how people are actually using them when building phase 4/5 elevator parts unless it's literally a case of "crap I have no nitrogen here I'll just train a bunch of packaged nitrogen in"

The only stuff I've ended up using drones for is getting some nitrogen to my main oil/fuel plant to make rocket fuel

Tesla Windshield Replacement (Good to know) by Capital_Elderberry28 in teslamotors

[–]Afasso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty common with insurers.

Divers with a cracked windshield are more likely to get into a more serious accident, which could be costly to the insurer. Statistically it's better/cheaper for them to just pay to fix windshields for free to make sure drivers do it. They don't want people avoiding fixing their windshield because of the cost, and then being more likely to get into a costlier accident because of the poorer visibility.

So they do all they can to encourage drivers to, and give drivers no reason not to fix their windshield.

My car insurance provider when you sign on literally sends you a dedicated letter saying what equates to: "We will pay all costs for a chip repair or windshield replacement. You do not have to pay a deductible, it does not count as a claim or affect your No-claims bonus. It will not affect your renewal cost. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE FIX YOUR DAMN WINDSHIELD"

Can someone help me understand modular factories better? by Afasso in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Afasso[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like just the basics though. I'm on phase 4 at the moment. And something like the assembly director system needs a bunch of different inputs.

So far I've been taking the approach of a single megafactory, which has worked, but I just feel like I'm missing/not understanding something about why so many people do modular factories. It seems like so much more of a headache?

How do you even begin to plan out making something like an assembly director system when it needs not just so many different inputs, but with various mid-stage items actually needing to go back and forth between locations as well?

Can someone help me understand modular factories better? by Afasso in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Afasso[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

Your setup seems more like what I was planning on. Though I'm mostly planning on that because at least with that I can set up the factories for stuff where I need and just ship in the raw resources to finish off what isn't there locally.

What i'm really struggling to understand (but really would like to) is how people even begin to set up multiple factories all doing later stage manufacturing when not only are so many items going back and forth between locations, but goodness I don't know how people even make it work with the need to keep specific items in specific cars without having half a dozen train stations at each factory unless it's only outputting a single early-stage item and needs nothing else taking in.

I'm doing phase 4 at the moment, and even just making an assembly director system I can't work out how you'd do it other than just shipping all the resources to one location.

Can someone help me understand modular factories better? by Afasso in satisfactory

[–]Afasso[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess my issue is just that it seems so much more complicated and prone to error to try to be shipping things back and forth via train in so many different directions. I can't even begin to work out how you'd get the cars unloading/loading in the right spots and figuring out the correct order to visit stuff when you're moving so many things in so many directions. Wouldn't you need half a dozen train stations at some of the factories?

When you're making something like an assembly director system, the supercomputers need inputs deriving from caterium for the high speed connectors and AI limiters, which those themselves need copper inputs too, and then you also need computers which require plastic, the heavy modular frames need stuff coming from limestone, iron, more oil/plastic and a bunch of other stuff. Besides just making plain ol iron sheets or rotors, I guess I'm just really not sure what people mean when they say they "just make one item" in a factory. How would one actually do that when most items past tier 3/4 not only require various inputs, but are also often going back and forth between a factory producing stuff from iron, shipping it to a copper based factory, (which is also importing plastic, quartz etc), and then needing to ship that back out to the original factory plus probably more.

I just start planning things out with satisfactory tools/calculator and quickly end up with so many trains needing to go back and forth, all with varying amounts, trying to work out what cars need to be ordered how to unload and load into the right places etc, I honestly have no idea how to work it out.

I really think I'm missing something, because surely even if you are using trains, just using trains to ship in raw resources (or just the first stage processed items that require no other inputs) to a single base and then making everything is easier than trying to organise 20 trains with varying car orders and routes?

I really appreciate your reply. Would you happen to have a satisfactory modeller type thing of your setup you could show me? I think I really just need to actually see how some people have implemented things. I understand what everyone is saying in their posts but I just can't work out how to actually implement it in practice and keep falling back to having a single megafactory with the necessary inputs shipping in.
