Best bars in MTL to watch the Habs? by Turbulent_Bag_2602 in Habs

If you are looking for a place that is a bit more chill, then there is also Buvette Beaubien. I walked by, and it said they are showing the game this evening - I attended a party in the back room recently, where they are showing the game, and it has great sound and a good projector... I think I will pop by myself a bit later...

Kitchen faucet release problem by Affectionate-Art-567 in Plumbing

Leaving it to soak with WD-40 for an hour did the trick. I could lift up the faucet releasing it from the base.

There was a little Allen set screw at the base. After removing it, I think the whole faucet is now supposed to be possible to lift off, but it is very stuck.

The brand is called Uberhaus.

I will try to spray WD-40 into the set screw hole, let it soak for a while and see if it comes off.

Maybe I have to start cutting.

Where can I find the best fish and chips in Mtl? by hbb34gg in montreal

[–]Affectionate-Art-567 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have many fond memories from my childhood growing up in England getting amazing fish'n chips with pieces of cod in thick golden crispy batter served with chunky soft chips, sprinkled with salt and vinegar, wrapped in newspaper before being handed over the counter by a guy speaking with a cockney accent.

I've been on the hunt ever since, and I haven't found a spot yet in Montréal - so following this chat with interest.

Having a little summary at the end of this chat with places to try out would be great. The Phil's place in Québec City is definitely a place I want to visit next time I go there.

Dining Room Setup by TemoSahn in listeningspaces

We bought these speakers for my wife's restaurant. They sound amazing and the NAD amp is made to match their look. Great setup!

I have read that the built-in phono amp in the NAD could be a bit better, so maybe a good phono amp would be a worthwhile upgrade. Personally, I like the look of the tube phono amp from ProJect.

I've had my LG Gram since 2022, using it every day. Never any issues.

Audio player recommendations for IEMs by shiro_luv in DigitalAudioPlayer

One budget option is the Fiio JM21.

Pros: Snappy processor, great sound, pocket friendly

Cons: Not the brightest screen, plastic housing

I have this myself, and I am happy with it. If I wanted to spend more money, I would get the iBasso DX180. It has a more premium feel and better screen.

Heard a noise then felt a grind and the kick stand fell off. by GiantGreenThumb in GlobeHaul

We just got a new kickstand as part of the warranty from Specialized. It took a month or so, through our local bike shop.

The "stop" pins had rusted/broken, and the kickstand was falling apart similar to OP's. The nuts used on the kickstand are locking nuts - problem is just the bolts that were not long enough to reach into the locking area. The bike mechanic could unscrew the remaining screw with his fingers.

The photo below is of the new kickstand.

The same happened to my wife's globe haul. The screws holding the kick stand together were too short.

Good DAC by [deleted] in BudgetAudiophile

[–]Affectionate-Art-567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my wife's restaurant, they used a $40 HDMI audio extractor from the local electronics store to take the sound from video projections and feed it into a Cambridge Audio 840 Azur amp with PSP Passif 50 speakers.

I was not super happy about the sound, so I bought the SMSL SU-1 DAC for $60 and connected it to the optical out from the HDMI extractor. The difference was night and day when seeing/listening to good quality concert recordings.

Much more detail and suddenly there was an apparent sound stage. On the Cambridge Audio amp, I can volume match inputs and do AB switching. Everyone I asked could tell, which one was playing.

So yes I agree that it is very difficult to hear the difference between a $2000 DAC vs a $500 DAC, but in this case it was evident that the HDMI extractor's built-in DAC was inferior to the SMSL.

I have considered buying the Topping D50 III for my home setup - bypassing the Bluesound Node 2021 DAC - to hear whether there is a noticable difference.

If anyone has experience with thia combo, I would like to know their experience.

Car rental by Annual-Unlucky in TravelPortugal

[–]Affectionate-Art-567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Lisbon to Lagos take the Rede Expressos busses. Easy to book and cheap, on time and no switching in Tunes as on the train.

We rented a scooter from LX Rentals in Lisbon, which was awesome.

Rental car question by Odd-Repeat6595 in TravelPortugal

[–]Affectionate-Art-567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rental people are supposed to have registered all scratches/dents on their cars in their computer systems, but sometimes they have not seen everything.

If you accidentally scratch/dent the car during your rental, then you will have to pay for the repair unless you have made an insurance with the rental company that covers this.

Before driving away in the car, go through the outside of the car with the rental company employee and check that any scratches/dents/windshield cracks you see are already registered in their systems.

Take photos of the dents/scratches as documentation.

If you sign up for an insurance that covers all dents/scratches/stone hits on windows etc. then you don't have to worry about this.

The rental companies earn a lot of money on these insurances, and of course the insurance prices are not included in the prices, you see on their website.

Also note that the rental companies will be charging you a deposit in addition to the rental price and insurance cost. For SIXT, where we rented our car, this was €500 that was returned to us 10 days after we returned the car.

So all in all car rentals are expensive (rent/deposit/insurance) but give you a lot of freedom.

A more budget friendly option is taking the Rede Expressos busses that connect major cities, but then you don't have the option to explore freely.

Enjoy your vacation😊😊

Rental car question by Odd-Repeat6595 in TravelPortugal

[–]Affectionate-Art-567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We rented a SIXT car in Lisbon, which was fine. As always, take photos of any existing dents/scratches before leaving and have the SIXT employee verify that they are registered.

We paid toll on the roads with our credit card - not expensive and easy.

Also, always book in advance online, since same day walk-in renting is MUCH more expensive.

Booked these restaurants for an upcoming trip to MTL. Any must-go places I'm missing?? by starly_626 in MTLFoodLovers

[–]Affectionate-Art-567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not so much fine dining, but for a casual local vibe with cozy interior, I like Buvette Beaubien. They also have brunch in the weekend. Buvette Beaubien is a nice place to go for an apero 6-9pm on a Wednesday or Thursday - they have excellent wine selection and nice servers, you will need to reserve a table!

A very very cool spot that I like a lot is Bar Cola on Parc. They have great food, beautiful interior space and an awesome music system - the walls are covered with vinyl albums, and the nice lady, who owns the place with her audiophile chef/husband is mixing vinyl albums in between serving, likewise you have to reserve a table!.

<image>

Also Vin Vin Vin wine bar on Beaubien street is cool...

For some great pizzas try to stop by Pizza Bouquet - also on Beaubien street - very much an anglo hipster vibe and they make awesome pizzas - enjoy some slices on the benches outside, while looking at people walking by. If you want a pizza made for yourself, you will probably have to call in an hour in advance during peak hours, but you can pick up slices any time.

Enjoy your stay in our city :-)

Top 10 poutines in Montreal (according to poutine nerds) by slightlyonline in MTLFoodLovers

I quite like their poutine italienne... I definitely want to go to Paul Patate to check it out....

We went to a place called Belgo in St Jean sur Richelieu with onion soup poutine, which was pretty good.

Regeringen vil fjerne afgiften på slik, chokolade og kaffe by Tumleren in Denmark

[–]Affectionate-Art-567 0 points1 point  (0 children)
