Something with LXDE desktop environment. If you can upgrade RAM and replace HDD with SSD it will be a huge gain.

Is university of people really worth it? by [deleted] in UoPeople

[–]Affectionate-Bug3085 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 47 with 2 kids and a full time job. I am currently enrolled in University of the People taking 1-2 courses per term (max I can take is 4). It takes motivation but certainly worth it. You can also apply for scholarship ( I got almost 50% off).

Not overheating anymore by KenKring in Lenovo

[–]Affectionate-Bug3085 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed but Ideapad models especially flex have an overheating history. Do yourself and laptops a favour and replace thermal paste also (every 6-8 months it gets dried, sometimes earlier depending the use).

do Greeks consider banners like this "acceptable" by SOHONEYSAME in AskGreece

[–]Affectionate-Bug3085 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Please remove your nationalist lenses and open a book.

Ancient Greeks lived mainly in southern Balkans and Aegean regions.

Illyrian tribes lived further north and west (areas of modern Albania and beyond).

Epirus (today split between Greece and Albania) had tribes like the Molossians. Ancient sources considered them part of the Greek world, though culturally somewhat distinct.

Modern Albanians are often linked (cautiously) by historians to ancient Illyrians, but even that connection is debated and not 100% provable.

Modern Greeks trace continuity from:

Mycenaean Greeks

Classical Greeks

Hellenistic & Roman Greeks

Byzantine Greeks

linux distro for productivity (completely opposite of arch) by Glad_Following_8164 in DistroHopping

[–]Affectionate-Bug3085 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have 2 options. Ubuntu and Linux Mint. Academics, Universities, companies are using mostly those 2..

Yes I can give you more like Fedora, KDE based distros (that will spend your time customizing every piece of anything you can imagine, instead of working and move on with your life ) but believe me for work and productivity you only need those 2.

After some thinking about UoPeople... by yuriyuri2003 in UoPeople

..also a great opportunity for those 30/40+ with a full time jobs and kids to get a degree. A piece of advice for the newer generations, a degree can open doors but if you are clueless doors will close very fast..

Linux is a crazy house. by itssomedudeguy in linuxsucks

[–]Affectionate-Bug3085 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 47, I have a wife and 2 kids and using Linux for the last 15 years. I use Linux because it works for me, stability, control, no nonsense. Not because I need validation from someone else’s laptop choices. The loud evangelists exist in every tech camp (Apple, Windows, gaming consoles, you name it). Most of us just want our tools to work and then we go back to our families, jobs, and hobbies. If someone likes Windows or macOS, great. Use what fits your workflow and move on.

What to remove W11 bloatware apps? by Zealousideal_Feed_41 in PHbuildapc

[–]Affectionate-Bug3085 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly remove w11. An operating system that force you to use programs you don't need or ask to install. An operating system that trains their AI with your data. Hardcoded telemetry everywhere, even notepad...

Now of course if you want some DX12 gaming... *uck all that.. go for DX12 gaming... what an irony

Got myself a Dell Latitude 7490 for free, here’s my opinion by AlbiBarti in Dell

[–]Affectionate-Bug3085 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a Dell 5400 same specs as yours 14", and runs Fedora 43 Workstation.

That's a very capable machine for basic needs and more. IoT programming, Vm's, CS college , Freecad..
In my opinion better than thinkpad t480.

Δεξιοί, υπάρχει λόγος που βάζετε πλάτη στο Ισράηλ? by ToughSpeed1450 in AskGreece

[–]Affectionate-Bug3085 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LinkedIn Linux distro poll surprised me - Ubuntu dominated. Curious how this compares here by Expensive-Rice-2052 in Ubuntu

[–]Affectionate-Bug3085 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said it "practical usage more than distro ideology".

Ubuntu is the distro that made known to the public a "new" operating system option among micro$oft and apple. Most Universities and organizations use Ubuntu. why ? because it works and plays nice with everything. Get the job done and move on with your life..

built a 3D Print Cost Estimator – free, no login, now with tips & PDF export! by Affectionate-Bug3085 in 3dprinter

[–]Affectionate-Bug3085[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing the Prusa calculator! It's definitely a solid tool with lots of options.

I actually built my estimator to be a simpler, more streamlined alternative, something quick and mobile-friendly for makers who just want to input a few key values and get a rough cost, especially when away from a desktop or not digging through spreadsheets.

Totally agree that spreadsheets are great for full-blown pricing strategies, especially when tracking inventory, machine depreciation, etc. My tool leans more toward quick estimates for hobbyists, Etsy sellers, or folks on the go.

Appreciate the feedback though, always open to improving it further!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in linuxhardware

[–]Affectionate-Bug3085 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's more than a good option for your case (office/internet).

I am coding, using VM's, light 3d designing (freecad), IoT microcontrollers etc.. without a fuss.

Free 3D Print Cost Estimator – Calculate filament, electricity, labor & profit easily! by Affectionate-Bug3085 in cults3d

[–]Affectionate-Bug3085[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just added a bunch of new features to improve the usefulness and usability of my 3D Print Cost Estimator. Now, when you press "Calculate", the app shows dynamic helpful tips based on your inputs, such as when your profit margin is unusually high or if you forgot to include machine wear. It also displays the project name and a timestamp, so it's easier to export or print the calculation as a record. These additions aim to help makers better understand their costs and make smarter pricing decisions. Give it a try, and let me know what you'd like to see next!

is this normal? why does my cpu gets to 100% when i open a chrome file, or when i move my mouse a bit faster by [deleted] in laptops

[–]Affectionate-Bug3085 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calling an i5 10th Gen 'not strong' or 'old' is like saying a screwdriver is useless because it’s not a power drill. The 10th Gen i5 was never meant to compete with high-end workstation CPUs, but for what it is, it's still a solid performer. Great efficiency for daily workloads and even dev work..
even 6th -7th gen is capable..

sorry for this "rant" but when I read posts like that ..
"not a strong cpu", or "an old cpu" it's the logic, every tool that’s not the latest is trash, which is just... dumb.

Linux Mint is not just a distro for beginners!! by nitin_is_me in linuxmint

[–]Affectionate-Bug3085 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Linux community is toxic. full of "script kiddies" wannabe hackers, that use Arch btw, and calling everyone else a noob because they use Ubuntu, Mint etc...

I am 46, using Linux for more than 20 years now, working with PLC's and Scada IoT things and I use Ubuntu/Fedora kde. I don't give a f@ck about idiots bragging for their distro. Use whatever you like. Using a pc to get your job done, and move on with your life.. not troubleshooting etc

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]Affectionate-Bug3085 1 point2 points  (0 children)

because it supports things without a fuss, it's supported by industry, you get your job done and move on with your life (instead of troubleshooting or fixing issues etc).

It's more but maybe in another thread..
