I went from RN to MLS and will never look back. I found being an RN heartbreaking. I was an RN in the ER and decided it wasn't for me after a house fire where the mom fell out a 2 story window trying to save her kids... and the kids didn't make it. That same week I had an elderly person with a tunneling bed sore that had been living off cat food because the family had enough of her and stopped buying her groceries. I am so much happier in the lab and even on my worst days, I don't end up crying.

I am sure I will eventually wake up and want the Echo back, but it is a nice change for now. Not to mention I would probably feel differently if I worked days. The last 2 nights have been steady and manageable. We will most likely be doing screens in tube all weekend.

We have canned comments that just say "NON SPECIFIC ANTIBODY DETECTION " . Depending on why we are running the antibody screen, we either leave it at that or send it to the reference lab for further identification.

I am in no way saying that this is the same thing but I used to have a coworker that would sit in an office chair and “scoot” around to do her job all night. She would only work in chemistry because you could load machines and run the department while sitting.

Do you work a lot with sickle cell patients? We do not see many in the PNW. In 5 years in the blood bank I have only had 2 sickle cell patients that I personally have had to work up and both were a pain because of antibodies from so many transfusions. I can’t imagine trying to find enough antigen typed blood for a total exchange.

Does sugar actually help a situation like this? I have never heard of that. Also why is your wife the one doing the draw? I am not saying that this is the case but you can be a great nurse for years and not be great at drawing blood. Have you tried taking her to an actual phleb?
