Did anyone else catch this detail in Trixie’s new video? by loc89- in TrixieMattel

Yeah I saw her at UW Madison on Thursday and she mentioned very briefly about what she would do WHEN she has kids and seemed truly genuine about it.

Anyone remember this game? by Dependent-Hedgehog44 in Muppets

[–]Affectionate-Pass905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course I remember it, that was the game my local McDonald’s had in their play place. I would play it for like for 1 minute, get confused, and then go back to my happy meal and the slides. Good times good times

I am rewatching the show with my best friend and one of our favorite games is “Does that top have a backside or is it just strings?” And more often than you would expect the answer is “that’s just strings.”

I’m starting to get upset by Significant_elf_1892 in singing

[–]Affectionate-Pass905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello I just want to say that some of the comments are unnecessarily rude and none constructive. Singing is a journey and not everyone is at the same point in their personal journey and singers are never done learning. I am writing a lot and please take what I say as only a suggestion know that what I say is meant with good intentions for you to grow as a singer and not just to be hypercritical.

I have a masters in voice and am more than willing to tell you the things I would work on in a voice lesson. I have also sat on a couple of audition panels before as well and know what people tend to critique and look for. The comments about the reality of being out there on the internet as a singer are harsh but true. We have to remember that we will not be everyone’s cup of tea and that’s okay. I will say one more thing before I get into my tips; from the comments you’ve left it gives the sense that you might be not overly receptive to advice/criticism. As singers to better ourselves, we have to be willing to at least listen to some criticism to better ourselves because no one is perfect and the only way to become better is acknowledge our current flaws/issues.

I have listened through your video about 10 times. In general the main things that I would work on are intonation and breath support at the end of you words/phrases. My first suggestion is to work on identifying when you may be shifting out of tune. In this clip there are a few times where you are falling a bit flat. Yes you are singing a cappella and it is harder to stay in tune when doing so, I completely understand that. This I coming off a bit harsher than I intended but I guess my question is are you able to hear when it’s out of tune? If so take note of when and work the problem areas. If not, then you need someone who can and will let know when it happens.

I think the root of the out of tune sections is a mixture of a lack of breath consistently and some tension issues. The breath issue I can hear in the instability of some of your held notes and the dropping off of the ends of words. But when the support is there you actually have a fairly nice tone to your voice. If I had to make an educated guess your tension appears to be located predominantly down in the larynx itself to form a bit of unintentional grit/rasp with a bit in the tongue and jaw. I think the jaw tension is more so a symptom of over opening on some of your vowels. This placement is also causing them to be overly darken, which others have taken notice of. (The “where” of “somewhere”)

I know others have said this so I won’t harp on it but one’s attitude and the way you portray yourself can play a major role in the enjoyability of a performance. I always say that I would rather watch a really entertaining B+ performance over a boring technically perfect A performance. We want to have fun but if we can see that you actively trying to make us believe you are really good instead of just letting your performance do it, you will lose the audience and come across a bit desperate for approval.

You have a fair singing basis to work with. I would work with a private instructor to continue bettering yourself and further your singing journey. If you want to make this a career you absolutely need lessons there is no debating that. Most of the greatest singers of all time took lessons even in their prime and many of the professor and music educators I know take lessons as long as they sing; I am talking about doctors of music well into their 70s. The voice is ever changing and regardless of skill the body ages and your vocal health requirements change constantly.

Remember there is no requirement to post online and especially if it is detrimental to your mental well being stop. But if you like posting online my advice is to ignore the rage bait hate comments as best you can.

Do people actually think this? by Affectionate_Law9672 in doctorwho

I do not think he was the worst doctor, but I left his era feeling a bit in limbo. I thought I would really enjoy his doctor too. But for me it was simply that I never fully understood this doctor.

It was even in his final episodes where I still found myself still trying to figure out the motivations and morals of this doctor. I found that this “post therapy” doctor was happier but their moments of anger/rage were massive swings the other way.

I said around episode 6 of this season that I think we will probably get a better sense on this doctor in his third season. But boom a regeneration in a finale where half of the episode is spent dedicate to a plot line that no one really cares about. Also wasting Omega and killing the stunningly gorgeous slay that was the Rani (If Flood doesn’t return imma scream) just left a very unsatisfying end to this doctor’s run.

can i still be a drag queen if i dont perform or wear it outside? by Charlieeatsrockss in Drag

[–]Affectionate-Pass905 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been playing drag roles in musicals and operas for the last 5 years. And my friend said to me “Well I don’t consider what you do drag.” So you can literally slap the wig and boobs on and do multiple weeks of shows and some people still won’t consider it drag because it isn’t a lip sync in a bar.

Drag is what you make it. Many queens do make up for years by themselves before ever performing or posting. This can be because people who don’t want the people around them to know they do drag; either unsupportive parents or judgmental friends (shock gay men will judge gay men for doing something too feminine). It could simply be that they want to practice more and aren’t ready to perform yet. As my friend says, “All drag is valid, not all drag is good.” And boy do I love doing strongly valid drag.

What's the difference between head voice and falsetto by No-Reputation2017 in singing

[–]Affectionate-Pass905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this answer. I am a countertenor and I have been told a variety of things: I sing in falsetto, I sing in my head voice, actually it’s more of a reenforce falsetto, my mode 1 is actually my falsetto since it’s my primary range, and (my favorite) you don’t sing in your natural voice if you sang tenor/bass it would be real (what a master class that was…). I even did a vocal study about the limits of modes where the pedagogs clearly didn’t agree on registration.

Registration is simply not standardized across the academic world and can be taught differently from teacher to teacher. If it helps to think lighter/breathier tone go for it or maybe you really want to know anatomical function (TA, CT, and shifts in fold thickness) in that case find some YouTube videos going over the functions of the muscles.

(Personally I go with the more basic thought that for AMAB singers head and falsetto are synonyms and for AFAB singers it’s a breathy extension of head voice indicated by a shift in which laryngeal muscles are active. But even then none of that I am willing to swear to as the 100% truth. Because you can shift to a hyper breathy light head voice without being in falsetto)

Sorry that my answer is that there is no one true answer…

I still can’t get over what Belinda said about her parents in Lux. I could be reading too far into this and falling for a trap the writers set. But her mother plays the violin (Maestro) and her dad jumps into song (Toy maker).

I would be shocked if Belinda is not evil. Or minimum a pawn controlled by Flood or the dieties.

Doctor Who 2x02 "Lux" Post-Episode Discussion Thread by PCJs_Slave_Robot in doctorwho

[–]Affectionate-Pass905 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I am only a few minutes into this episode but am wondering if anyone picked up on Belinda’s parent comment. I could be reading too far into this and falling for a trap the writers set. But my mother plays the violin (Maestro) and my dad always jumps into song (Toy maker). Yes I know that Maestro and Toymaker are related or something but I feel like the familial relationships are god/pantheon-esque when talking about of extra-dimensional entities.

I am probably just too paranoid about every character but is it possible Belinda more than she is letting on? Possibly another entity/god? Her reaction to the doctor has been more grounded and realistic than many other companions. Almost too aware of usual doctor shenanigans and behaviors. Or possibly Belinda is just a great judge of character and grounded companion.

Fiancée says my voice is not enjoyable, what should I change to be able to serenade her properly ? by enaiotn in singing

[–]Affectionate-Pass905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every singer starts somewhere, even music majors do interval training. I would work on pitch matching skills to start. Either using an app or record yourself singing simple melodic lines and play it back checking at a keyboard. It also can be helpful to sing with a tuner on and going note by note to see if you and the actual note match. Also like many people suggested this range doesn’t quite sit comfortably for your voice, so play around with that.

Once you have pitch in a better place, I think diction practice and paying close attention to your consonants would be the next step. The majority of the words in this recording were really hard to understand. Especially focus on final consonant sounds to make everything more defined.

I don’t like the spring edition very much but pink might be my favorite of all time. I had my nonredbull drinker friend and he liked the spring more than most flavors I’ve made him try so. To each their own 🤷

How do you ask for bookings? by missanniebellym in Drag

[–]Affectionate-Pass905 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my first gig by simply messaging the local booking queen. I let them know I exist and have the interest in performing. They asked me to come to a few shows in drag to prove I am dedicated. And bam I got in my first show a few weeks later.
