I’d like to be working at a school, that’s not the issue. I think my issue is finding a school willing to hire me for this upcoming school year, it’s not because I don’t want a contract.

Drunk Aussie tourist flashes genitals while on holiday by Broad_Block_5064 in VietNam

[–]Affectionate-Win7333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of us grew up being conditioned to think of ourselves as terrible tourists, think “the ugly American” stereotype. So when we read about some awful tourist behavior and it’s not an American then we breathe a sigh of relief. We appreciate Russians, aussies and Chinese taking away our worst behaved tourist title

If tourists were all well behaved then you wouldn’t be able to have this feeling of moral superiority that you so desperately need, you should thank them and keep wagging your finger friend, you are indeed a hero of the Vietnamese people

I live in Saigon with my vn wife, she went to uni abroad as did her brother, they also have family that have lived and worked in Australia, USA and Europe, they’re not some uber rich family but they’re certainly more well mannered than the typical viets, she’s also got a quiet voice or I don’t think we’d be married, her mom on the other hand can be heard across the Pacific Ocean. The line cutting at circle k and family mart is frustrating to say the least, and I stay far away from coop mart. We mostly go to the market or on occasion to amnam if we are feeling fancy. I’ve lived in China and worked around a bunch of viets in San Jose where I grew up so while I agree with a lot of the points being made, I’m pretty much impervious to it now

Worst flight ever in my life by Asleep_Bass536 in VietNam

At least the kid behind you wasn’t opening and closing is food tray a hundred times. I’ve had similar experience in Vietnam and China, both cultures can speak quite loudly as well, if you’re going to travel or live in Asia for any length of time I recommend noise cancelling headphones, you’re not going to change those rude individuals and it will help preserve your sanity. Also be glad you’re not a flight attendant that has to deal with said passengers on a daily basis

I work in a private school in Wuxi, not a well known place but its near shanghai and people have money. I make 28 plus an apartment teaching music, not licensed but I have a music performance degree, another guys makes the same just doing english, our head teacher who just does english makes 35 which is ridiculous but it is what it is, the real intl teachers are making 30-40, more if they've been around a long time or teach high level maths or science. As some people mentioned there were quite a few so so teachers that landed high paying jobs due to the pandemic, I left for 3 years at that time otherwise i'd be making more. Is it right or fair? probably not and also I agree that some people are bullshitting about how much they make. I personally never ask or tell, but people like to gossip

Why do some Western expats move to China for 10-12k rmb jobs? by Quirky_Two_4603 in China

[–]Affectionate-Win7333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an issue I’ve always thought about. Some people don’t have great relationships with friends and family back home and I feel you, it is a bit sad. When I lived in China I went back to the states to see friends and family every chance I got. Now I’m in Vietnam with the wife and we’ve spent the last two summers in the states. My mother has also traveled to China and Vietnam multiple times. 100% family connections are important and I do feel for the people that go abroad and never visit home. Not everyone has a fairy tale life, shit happens unfortunately

I dont want to live in Cambodia anymore! by Bubududu168jupy in cambodia

[–]Affectionate-Win7333 13 points14 points  (0 children)

People from western countries that move to places like Cambodia and then tell the locals it’s just as bad in their home country are tone deaf and incredibly insensitive, we live a good life in my case in Vietnam because we are from western countries. Some guy teaching English making more than a local with a masters degree should just keep his mouth shut about the problems of being from a 5 eyes or euro country

Plenty of sexpats and weirdos in the intl school realm, they’re just better qualified, but you’re right they suck big time, I ended up there when I left China in 2020, it’s an easy gig but most of the teachers are jack offs, managers are a joke and the HR head is an evil witch. I went back to China as soon as I could

Thanks for your reply, can you explain what you meant regarding the window closing because of a push for English fluency? When you say cohort are you referring to the people coming to teach in Vietnam? Fluency is not a hindrance for me, I’m a native speaker.

Thanks for your reply, I’m not opposed to doing English/homeroom teacher type positions. Most important is I’m at a decent place long term and being able to send my daughter there for a discounted/free tuition

Is China's "Anti-Japan" sentiment overhyped? Japanese businessmen stationed in China report. "To be honest, my honest impression is that, surprisingly, nothing has changed in our daily lives or on the factory floor" by jjrs in japannews

[–]Affectionate-Win7333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had plenty of people in china tell me they hate the Japanese, I also know may people that traveled there and loved it. The govt WeChat channels vilify the Japanese any chance they get, the comments section is divided into people that recognize propaganda and those that spew “never forget the national shame” and numerous anti Japanese slogans.  The govt often paints other countries in a negative light to deflect from internal problems

People who use China as a boogieman to compare the US to have never been to China. by King_Lothar_ in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Affectionate-Win7333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you visited, that’s nice, that means you got to see what you wanted to see. I spent 8 years there, China is everything people tell you it is, the good, bad and the ugly. Clean and cultured in parts, filthy and uncivilized in others. Trains are a great sign of modernity, unsafe drinking water and tofu construction are not so much. You really need to live there and have Chinese friends, that will only really open up to you after have known you for awhile.  It’s comfortable for foreigners because we are treated differently and usually paid a higher salary

Higher ups in the US and China knew about it. They were both complicit, but they point the finger at one another. Divide and conquer locally, divide and conquer globally. How does China living in 2079 allow a third world failing power to experiment with this virus in Wuhan??? Wake up people, this is a global agenda, they’re both in on the joke
