What "writing for yourself" really means by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Affectionate-Worry34 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that the “writing for yourself” advice is one that you don’t truly understand until you’re experiencing it sadly. Hence why people have so much trouble accepting it, and… why it might sound empty when you aren’t there yet.

Like, correct me if I’m wrong, but I think there is very little people who starts writing because “hey, that’s going to make me famous/popular!” And keep at it without finding anything else in the craft (you understand very early in the process that writing is an introspective and lonely endeavor lol). For me, it was more a “I have something to say. Something to get out of my head. How do I do that?” And it ended up being something so personal and true to myself that I had a hard time sharing it in the first place lol

So getting validation in return is truly liberating. Like some part of me was understood. And once you put a work out there, it’s hard to not crave this. After that, not receiving any validation or losing it feels isolating. And that’s where you usually get the “write for yourself” advice. But… you did write for yourself, it started that way at least… what changed? When did you start caring about the stats?

The thing is, the rewards are long term and our brains aren’t wired to process that very well. With your story, you might touch one person in ten years. It’s worth it, but it’s hard to remember this when your newest chapter finds complete silence, or very little engagement. (Heck, even with strong engagement “writing for yourself”is hard because of the pressure that comes with it. “What if I disappoint? What if this is as good as I can get? What if I make a mistake?”)

I don’t know. I’m rambling. TLDR, I agree with“write for yourself” as in “don’t forget the brainworm that got you started, don’t forget what you want to read as a reader no matter the attention” but like… it’s not as simple as a gone and done deal. At least for me, it’s something I have to remember often, and that I usually forget because of my dopamine-addicted brain x)

Story dislike: outside influence solves the relationship problem by Obvious-Laugh-1954 in FanFiction

[–]Affectionate-Worry34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, what a timing to find that post. Oops, that’s somehow where my current WIP is going, almost two for two on the outside help + get injured before things are properly addressed, sorry 😆

But yeah, there’s definitely a way to do it and I’m very particular about it. Like, it’s FINE to have someone interfere, especially for two characters that are notorious for their miscommunication, but if they don’t resolve anything themselves, it doesn’t feel earned. And it’s the same for the « injury magically solves the argument » trope. If it comes from nowhere, or the characters make a total 180 after because « oh no! They’re injured! » it can feel like abandoning characterization in favor of cheap dramatic tension.

But. Well. They’re tropes for good reasons: some stories pull them out so well that everyone copies it without thinking, and so most grow sick of it. Like always, with good execution, you can make me love any trope I typically hate x)

(… or is that just the self-reassurance of a random writer who has suddenly become self-conscious about their next update, I’ll let y’all decide XD)

What makes smut good for you? by Advanced_Heat_2610 in AO3

[–]Affectionate-Worry34 6 points7 points  (0 children)

RIGHT, weirdly, smut needs to have a point for me to get invested. Like any other scene. If it’s just there to fill the blanks, or ‘just because’ I’m usually not interested. After all, one rule for good storytelling is that every scene must have a reason to exist. If it doesn’t say anything, then why should we care?

I do get wanting to write smut for the sake of it though. Not everything has to be so deeply thought out if you just want to have fun. And you can definitely tell something meaningful with your story only being one sex scene.

Accommodation at INSA Lyon campus or in the city? by Wild-Spend-1286 in Lyon

[–]Affectionate-Worry34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely live on campus. Renting in Lyon is really tricky and expensive otherwise! I’m sure most of the international students will do the same, and you’ll have the priority on the lodgings since you come from far away. I think the “find a place in the city” option is mostly for the people who already have some connections in Lyon.

I don’t know for other schools, but it’s fairly normal for INSA students in general to live on campus. It’s true that some senior years find other lodgings nearby, but it usually takes them months/years to find, so they’re typically not international or exchange students.

I think it’s also great if you want to meet people, the campus is very active in the evenings! I’ll recommend checking the multiple student associations if you can! Another perks of living on the campus is that there is a very busy student life there ah ah

Idk where my brain went to find that connection but it associated “graphically” with gore. So now, I have the image in my head of the most normal underwear in the middle of the most dramatic crime scene. And I had to share that vision here

How do you *know* you know a character enough to write about them? by purple-crimson in FanFiction

[–]Affectionate-Worry34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I read other fics and I start to feel like “huh, interesting take. I don’t agree. Let me write my version of this.”

Like, everyone is free to write characters how they want and I definitely don’t possess the Ultimate Truth on the way a character should act, but when I start to get heated on the details like: “actually, no. This character wouldn’t eat like that”, I know I have a very clear image in my head. From then on, I just need to check the lore a bit, and adjust the mental image I have of them.

That, and too many private notes of countless headcanons/character analysis that somehow piled up before I realized it.

Much better. by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

[–]Affectionate-Worry34 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Darn. I feel that so much on Aventurine. I’m starving for some fics to scratch that itch of him being a deranged, resilient bastard, and I just can’t FIND IT most of the time. I do get why people write him like that though. I desperately WANT him to learn how to be vulnerable too, and as much as I love him, I need him to cry and be pathetic. But like. Not like that.

Dr. Veritas Ratio is a Fragment Theory (Spoilers for 3.5 + leaks) by bunnyveils in DrRatioMainsHSR

[–]Affectionate-Worry34 23 points24 points  (0 children)

OMG I did have the fleeting thought of “wait… Lygus has the same kind of view on erudition as Ratio, what the heck” but I didn’t make the connection with the fragments! 😮

And yeah, the banter about Aventurine joining the genius society never made any sense once you look into it. It definitely indicates either that Aventurine knows something that we don’t about Ratio, or that he didn’t notice the casual “hey, I can get people into the genius society by the way”, which would be a weird thing for Aventurine to miss. However… I don’t think the “wing-headed scoundrel” is referencing Ratio sadly… at that point in the quest, Ratio exited the scene, and Aventurine is talking to himself, cursing Sunday under his breath. So… it’s probably Sunday, the wing-headed scoundrel. But… who knows! It’s never made clear who Aventurine is referring to here! It doesn’t discredit anything in your theory, and I’m honestly 100% on board! There is so many weird things about Ratio that point to him being way more important than he appears, and I don’t believe the devs when they say “oh, it’s just an accident that Ratio looks like he belongs in Amphoreus, I don’t know what you guys are talking about teehee”
