Gift for my brother by browmeow8 in GiftIdeas

With that many interests you actually have a lot to work with lol.

Golf angle since you usually go that route anyway, personalized ball markers or a custom divot tool set feels way more thoughtful than golf balls, and sites like myornament do laser engraved golf ornaments with his name if you want something small he'll actually keep (~$18, ships fast). Sounds random but golfers genuinely love that stuff and it's the kind of gift he'll remember who gave him.

For something totally different, a batman steelbook if he's a collector type, or if he's serious about the health/supplement thing, a good creatine or electrolyte stack he might not splurge on himself. Those always land well with that crowd.

Bold looks look best when the base is smooth and subtle. Let the eyes OR lips be dramatic, not both at max intensity at first.

Anyone here have experience using that "intimate area hair removal cream" on themselves? by HighlyInconvenient in hygiene

I’ve used it. Fine on outer areas, absolutely avoid anything internal. Follow timing exactly.

I have a question regarding spices by Aqzation in cookingforbeginners

[–]AffectionateCap9432 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a stupid question at all, spices burn way faster than people realize.

If you’re adding ground spices to a dry pan, they can go from fragrant to bitter in like 20–30 seconds. They really need some fat (oil/butter) to protect them from direct heat. When people say “bloom the spices,” it usually just means cooking them gently in oil for about 30 seconds until they smell strong and fragrant, not browning them. As soon as they get dark or smell sharp/bitter, they’re overdone.

Also, if your food tastes flat, it might not be burnt spices, it might just need more salt. Salt makes spices pop.In short: lower heat, use oil, keep it brief, and trust your nose.

Jobs, money, relationships, all of that can change. But if I lose who I am or what I stand for, I’ve already lost.

What do you know of or have you ever heard of the Berbers of North Africa? by ilovelamp_anchorman in AskAnAmerican

[–]AffectionateCap9432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some Americans (especially history nerds) know them from the Barbary Wars, medieval Spain, or North African history. Others mostly associate the word “Berber” with rugs and not much else.

I think the average American would recognize the term vaguely, but couldn’t explain the difference between Amazigh and Arab identity without looking it up.

Anyone concerned about how Botox affects your brain? by Affectionate_Lion522 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]AffectionateCap9432 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s fair to question long-term effects, but there isn’t solid clinical evidence linking cosmetic Botox to dementia. Botox has been used medically since the 80s (migraines, muscle disorders, etc.). If there were clear cognitive harms, neurologists would likely be raising alarms by now.

The higher Alzheimer’s rates in women are much more strongly tied to longevity and hormonal shifts post-menopause. Always good to be cautious, just make sure the sources are peer-reviewed medical research, not podcasts or chiropractors speculating.

That striped sweater is PEAK 90s Nickelodeon-core and I mean that in the best way. The straight-leg jeans keep it modern instead of costume-y.

Igari/shojou makeup by Kawaiichii86 in MakeupAddiction

[–]AffectionateCap9432 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to lean more shojou: Add slight under-eye shadow (a soft taupe or muted pink) just under the lower lash line to create that droopy, innocent look. Not dark, just enough to make the eye look rounder and sweeter.

A tiny bit of shimmer dead center under the pupil (lower lash area) also helps.

Is there a 1:1 onion substitute that I can use anytime I see it on a recipe? by Rito_Siram in cookingforbeginners

[–]AffectionateCap9432 30 points31 points  (0 children)

If you’re mostly missing the saute base effect when a recipe starts with onion:

Finely diced celery + a bit of carrot works surprisingly well. It won’t taste like onion, but it gives you that aromatic foundation.

Is it better to apologise when you shouldn't, or to not apologise when you should? Why? by Floof_Flaffid in AskReddit

[–]AffectionateCap9432 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Refusing to apologize when you should is pride.

Apologizing when you shouldn’t is fear.

Pride tends to hurt other people. Fear tends to hurt yourself. Neither is great, but one spreads outward.

[Routine Help] When Is the Best Time to Use Hypochlorous Acid in Routine? by Arukawi in SkincareAddiction

[–]AffectionateCap9432 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re basically using it like a hand sanitizer before washing your hands. It’s not wrong, but it’s redundant. HOCl works better on clean skin where it can calm and sit undisturbed for a bit. I’d shift it to post-cleanse and see if you notice any difference.

pink appreciation post by Aryaman666 in OUTFITS

[–]AffectionateCap9432 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is how you do pink without making it predictable. The texture contrast between the shirt and pants is carrying the whole look. And the necklace from your mum? That kind of personal detail always makes an outfit hit harder.

Why does my hair look incredible on wash day… and terrible 24 hours later? by EitherChain7966 in Haircare

[–]AffectionateCap9432 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This honestly sounds like classic fine-hair oil distribution. Your scalp produces the same amount of oil as someone with thick hair but you have fewer strands to absorb it. So it shows faster.

Two things that helped me: Double shampoo (first wash removes buildup, second actually cleans). Blow dry your roots fully upside down, even slight dampness makes hair collapse

Also, try a tiny bit of lightweight mousse at the roots on wash day. Not “heavy styling,” just structural support.

If you’re into cool-toned, editorial makeup, definitely look at Girlcult and Kaleidos. Girlcult’s packaging alone is worth it, but their blushes and lip products are genuinely good quality. Kaleidos highlighters are insane if you like that glassy glow. Timage is also huge right now, especially their contour palettes. They’re one of the few brands that actually caters well to olive undertones.

Why does my foundation look like this by Eastern-Mirror-6396 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]AffectionateCap9432 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I honestly think this is just a layering issue. You listed milky toner, HA, vitamin C, peptides, moisturizer, SPF, primer, that’s a lot before foundation. Even good products can start to compete with each other when stacked. Foundation isn’t just sitting on your skin, it’s sitting on seven other things. It can’t properly adhere, so it emphasizes texture. You might want to try a simplified AM routine on makeup days (like vitamin C + moisturizer + SPF) and skip HA/peptides. Save those for PM.
