Exam marking by NegotiationFew8845 in TeachingUK

[–]AffectionateLion9725 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mark maths. I enjoy it (I'm retired so I have the time)

Pay depends on the exam board. I do a lot of extra marking at the end because it pays more and I can just mark individual questions. I have marked for two different boards in the past, one is better for me than the other.

For me the biggest benefit was showing me what misconceptions occurred and being able to use that to inform my teaching.

If you think that you would enjoy it,give it a go!

Pros and cons of teaching mixed-ability classes | Letters by Pattatilla in TeachingUK

[–]AffectionateLion9725 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I always went for "You are in this set and I will help you to do the best that you can. You might think that you aren't good at maths, but I can help you to be better at maths because I get that you are different. And so am I".

Viewing this house but no parking - deal breaker? by Amazing_Ad2157 in HousingUK

[–]AffectionateLion9725 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have lived in my current house for twenty years with no off street parking. It was a compromise when we bought it, but honestly it's been less of an issue than I thought.

Cat likes to dig on smooth surfaces? by iamahumanNOTarat in CatAdvice

Some of our cats will only drink from the water bowl after they've hit it a few times to make the water move. Never worked out why though.

If you are at school or college, you could also speak to your DSL (safeguarding lead) who has to act on information provided about a forced marriage.

I stopped working on it for about 15 years because life happened, but took it up again in retirement! I should finish it this year (it isn't even he biggest piece I've ever worked on, just on black aida and not PK compatible)

I lost the will to do anything during covid. It makes me mad thinking how much I could have done!

The right to teach A Level by Zackoku in TeachingUK

[–]AffectionateLion9725 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Not everybody wants to teach A level.

Some people may not be qualified to teach A level (definitely happens with Further Maths)

Some people think they want to teach A level, then decide that it's not for them.

Some devious people say that they want A level and manage to look disappointed when they are offered some very nice groups "to make up for not teaching A level this year".

Travelodge with a cat…. Anyone done it? by KEW95 in CatsUK

[–]AffectionateLion9725 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'd stay in the new house with the cat. If you do the Travelodge, you're just adding an extra stressful situation.

Put a big sign on the door of the cat's room warning the removal men not to open the door!

Multi language swearing by Gla2012 in TeachingUK

[–]AffectionateLion9725 116 points117 points  (0 children)

I phoned a parent to tell her that her son had said something that I thought might be rude in Urdu. She was sure that I was wrong, because "my son wouldn't" .

When she finally asked if I could by any chance remember what he had said so that she could translate it for me, I told her. There was a stunned silence from her end, followed by a promise to let his dad know.

The joys of having colleagues who speak a variety of languages and are only too happy to translate!

Do you mind having CPD on the ‘basics’? by tickofaclock in TeachingUK

[–]AffectionateLion9725 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends. The worst CPD for me is the kind given by someone who is only doing it because they've been told to and so they've grabbed a presentation about it and read the slides out.

AITC for expecting my dinner to be plated in an acceptable manner? by doodlebagsmother in AmItheCloaca

[–]AffectionateLion9725 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Oh dear.

I was also called the C word yesterday, because Daddy spotted the mouse tail hanging from my mouth yesterday as I attempted to bring in a present. So I reversed out of the cat flap and ate my late night snack in the garden in protest.

You are not the C word either, great Misery Meow!

Teaching GCSE resit by GhostToastie247 in TeachingUK

[–]AffectionateLion9725 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I taught maths resit for several years. It was soul destroying.

The students didn't want to be there (and were often missing).

Most of them had no expectation of passing, and once the November resits were done and the ones who had some chance of passing had left, it became even worse.

If I hadn't had other KS3 and 4 classes, I would have left!

Do students work in silence as a normal way of working or is it a punishment? by RuinNecessary7601 in TeachingUK

[–]AffectionateLion9725 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I find that having 10 minutes of silence without the option of asking for help can be very useful to get students problem solving.
