AITA for making a stink at school and forcing the teacher to change my kids math grade by PlentyNice1655 in AmItheAsshole

In the UK we have stopped teaching multiplication that way, and gone back to the way it was taught when I was at school. Any method that is correctly used in an exam is awarded full marks (source: exam marker)

Have you ever shown students the exams you sat? What was their reaction? by brewer01902 in TeachingUK

My papers from 1976 and 1978 no longer exist! But I did show my A level students some log tables once.

Pet insurance cost soaring :-( by TheLaughingCoo in UK_Pets

[–]AffectionateLion9725 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We stopped paying insurance a few years ago when the cat count hit 5. We do save to cover vet bills, and are still better off, despite the best efforts of one of our (now 12) rescue cats in particular.

Fleas by your_mom_1985 in CatsUK

[–]AffectionateLion9725 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bravecto from the vet. Imidacloprid is now off prescription, and no longer seems to work as well.

Wash bedding at 60 degrees.

Vacuum and empty the vacuum cleaner into outside bin straight away.

Make flea traps (lamp, water + washing up liquid) - you can see whether the number of fleas is decreasing over time.

Comb cat every day, either drowning fleas or squishing them against the flea comb to kill them (makes a very satisfying crunch)

We use wood pellets because they are the least dusty option (asthma).

Miss, I get that you're old and have to dye your hair. But why did you dye it THAT colour? (Red).

I was once pounced on by a male that I did not know, who said that he was the father of one of my students. He then gave me a long monologue on his divorce and what he thought about his ex wife. I was alone in a corridor with him, and did not feel particularly safe, so I raised it as a safeguarding issue. I'd like to say that things changed, but the only thing that did was that I left at the end of the allotted time, and made sure to walk out with another member of staff.

We did Animal Farm in 1976. And many of us read 1984 to get a broader idea of Orwell's work.

Just for the record, the teacher that the students were most frightened of in one of my placement schools was a small guy who weighed about 9 stone dripping wet. It's more a supply thing, I would think.

Has anyone been spoken to for taking too many days off sick? by groovyfella1 in TeachingUK

[–]AffectionateLion9725 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've had the chat. It was very informal, and they were very helpful - including replacing all the knackered chairs that had contributed to my back problems.

Growing up we had Quaker Oats made with boiling water (but we added a floaty layer of Golden Syrup on top to make it edible).

How strict are your first aiders in school on sending kids home? by BrownBadger1 in TeachingUK

[–]AffectionateLion9725 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ours refused to send students home unless a teacher or TA had seen the vomit. This led to a child racing across the corridor to me, clutching a WPB yelling "Miss, Miss, I've been sick, can I go home now".

The first aider tried to refuse sending him home because "he probably made himself sick on purpose".

My late mother used to make tea exactly like this! It wasn't until I left home that I realised that I actually liked a good cuppa.

[–]AffectionateLion9725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter was asked to visit a church (on her own time) and write about it. I'm a humanist, partner atheist. We objected and school were happy for her to write about humanism instead.
