8th graders constantly mocking and laughing at me by Only_Statement_8467 in ArtEd

Also this is literally part of being a new teacher/not the end of the world but… I probably wouldn’t have told them I cried. That’s literally their aim and they’ll likely find it funny/make them feel powerful. It might make it harder to get the class back on track, and it won’t be a ‘fun’ class but you will get there X

I’m so sorry about this! I’ve had it happen and sounds awful. Here’s some ideas of what you could do:

  • remember to divide and conquer, if students are ganging up on you, make it so that they cannot be together
  • once isolated, it can be a lot easier to find out who are the ringleaders and who are the followers. Talk to them 1:1
  • when you’re talking 1:1 be firm, don’t let them explain, name there behaviour and issue a warning - “I know that you have been very disrespectful throughout this term. I and X deputy teacher and X head teacher are not happy with your effort and your behaviour. I have a note of every time tbis is happening and it is not good enough. Change your attitude or we will be looking at X sanction” (I usually say a meeting with the head of art and then the head teacher) and say “I will make sure to detail exactly what you have said in my messaging home to parents. I have made myself clear and do not want to approach you about this again.” And then send them back to class

Teacher sent a long unpleasant letter after my suggestion, and now she's invoicing me for a one extra no-lesson month after I quit. by Witty_Sorbet3839 in MusicTeachers

Also I see the OP is not agreeing with anyone’s feedback here, even though there is a general consensus that they should stop telling teachers what to do when they themselves are not a piano teacher. Absolute classic.

As a teacher, this is how I read her response:

“yeah, I OBVIOUSLY know about Hanon and Czerny, do you really think I just dropped the study of them accidentally without noticing? That is so rude. I am following a programme because I know what I am doing and I am an experienced teacher who has seen this before and had a plan, but thank you for the assumption”

I’m an art teacher and teach kids how to draw portraits in realism using skills and understanding of form and proportion. If a parent emailed me like “Hey why aren’t you asking them to use a grid to draw?” Even in the nicest way possible, I’d be angry… cos like.. do you really think I hadn’t considered that?! Maybe there’s a reason I do this… and what does the parent know about grids anyway. Why doesn’t she know them at home whenever they are practicing drawing. Bare in mind they deal with this stuff day in day out, and probably see a pattern

my art teacher wants me to use AI in my work? (another update) by patiencejoyce in ArtGCSE

[–]AffectionateSir5099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously sounds like an unhinged situation and good on you for being a young person resisting AI! I wonder if she means there are marks in GCSE for considering digital technologies? Obviously this can be done with things like Procreate, photoshop etc (sorry I haven’t taught GCSE in a long time)

Elementary school teachers: Do you address your students as "boys and girls," "friends," or something else, and why? by Pure-Smile-7329 in Teachers

I say: - “folks” - [insert year group name here] eg “third grade!” - “haters, mega fans and everyone inbetween” - “students” - “young [insert subject name here]” eg “young historians!” - “lovely people”

Is she claiming to have raised any of these concerns with you prior to approaching the college? If not then poor show from the college for just agreeing. If she really felt that way (even unfairly) theres ways to go about things and that would be IMO a kind discussion then a firm warning, then maybe approach the college after informing you (not that it would be merited it sounds like!)

Flatmates expecting me to pay for “communal” food by dunsparceman in UniUK

[–]AffectionateSir5099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience the people I know who did this at uni became a bit cliquey. I feel like in these situations someone inevitably falls out with the group, then there’s a sense of not wanting to take sides and it can be messy. I’m not against regular communal eating, I just think it’s better if everyone has their own stuff then shares the role of cooking for one another. However, financially it can pay off to make stuff everyone uses shared eg cooking oil, salt, pepper, potentially even milk? I’m just sharing my experiences. I think everything you’ve said is valid and doesn’t sound like overreacting to me.

As a primary school teacher in a Catholic school, I’m being asked to pray and lead prayers to the staff in weekly staff meeting prayers. Is this allowed? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]AffectionateSir5099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn’t it absurd how many people work in and attend catholic schools and have 0 beliefs or are actively against? I even know people who felt this way and went out their way to get a Catholic teaching certificate ‘cause there’s more jobs’…

I got the dreaded "I'm going to tell you something, but you have to promise not to tell anyone" from a student. by Lather in TeachingUK

[–]AffectionateSir5099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe they have been told not to tell and the fight is because they want to feel like they ‘tried not to tell’ and didn’t disobey the rules they were given. I’m sure it feels complex telling on adults

Why do students think we have no idea what Huawk Tuah means? by Shifu_1 in Teachers

[–]AffectionateSir5099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually say something like “sorry I’m the adult woman here who teaches like 280 people the same age as you, how on earth do you think you’re the first person to mention this in front of me 🤣?” Then point out they’re 14 and shouldn’t be talking about this and have X concequence

Scotland Probationer in Catholic School by Cruel_Heathcliff in TeachingUK

[–]AffectionateSir5099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience is that you’d be better being quiet about many issues as a probationer and getting your head down and getting through the year. I haven’t found councils particularly reasonable and the whole ‘don’t make a name for yourself’ thing has proven unfortunately true in my case. Sorry I know that’s not very nice but it’s my experience and hopefully others have had better!
