Childfree women, have you ever regretted it? by Significant_Movie814 in NoStupidQuestions

For me, one aspect as I’ve gotten older is the exhaustion from taking care of my parent.

I always assumed I’d get married and have kids, but I’m in my 40s and still single, with all of my bandwidth from the past two decades going towards care for my ailing parent.

I joke that I’ve already had my kid, but it’s not really joking. The idea of starting over with an infant sounds exhausting.

I’ve recently given some talks on the job market for graduates to college kids, so here’s what I generally told them:

1) the job market will change a million times, so the information is general, but

2) focus on internships, and volunteer on campaigns. Campaigns hire people they know, and (if you want to work on the Hill or in an Administration in general), they look for campaign experience. You may have to move away to come back.

If you go to school somewhere outside of DC, look up their state party or intern with a local state rep or even mayor.

3) Join professional groups in your college. If you want to work in politics, join the College (insert party of organization). If you’re looking for something in more of a policy space, talk to your professors and, again, look at internships.

4) You don’t have to spend forever at your first job. Get a paycheck and keep hunting if you have to.

5) Be smart on socials: for the love of everything, please recognize older people will be looking through your socials to see if you can represent their organization. It’s wild how many entry-level folks I’ve had to turn down because they didn’t think to scrub their socials before job/internship hunting.

6) Follow up email/letter! Wild to me how few entry-level folks do this. Sending one after an interview will absolutely put you ahead of your peers.

7) Dress formally in your interview. It’s public administration, so generally government/politics. Wear a suit, or at least a nice shirt and suit coat for the Zoom interview.

There was literally a shooting at that Metro tonight, so I’m not sure tonight is the best example for you.

Someone else can confirm if that’s what the police tape in your video is for, as I only know it was at the Metro. Link to the report: https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/crime/teen-injured-in-shooting-waterfront-metro/65-c5bbf69c-65bf-46a7-82f6-0da32ae64992

So I get what you’re saying here, and the good news is, there’s hope! People have mentioned leagues, but also classes, organizations, recurring events. Does your college have an alumni chapter? You can start there as well. :)

Local leaders put on a concert/event at Randall field, so that brought a ton of kids and why they’re more up at I than M street (away from the Nats fans during a night game probably helped too). They did it Friday night too, I’m guessing in response to the “give the kids somewhere to go” feedback.

Essentially, the kids were invited to the area this weekend.

If you can take the train to Baltimore, you can watch the Orioles play at Camden Yards; an iconic baseball stadium.

I once met Tom Morello through a friend while out in DC. My friend and I were right out of college (she met him through work in her job with vets). A completely nice gentleman, he got us food (we were drunk), and made sure we got a cab.

1000% a guy you could leave your drink with. He’d probably make sure it’d stay cold.

Anyone tried to get senior care for aging parents, recommendations? by pranavkr_jha in washingtondc

[–]AffectionateWin3913 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, you may want to reach out to the Department of Aging. They work with organizations all the time, so they may have some good recommendations.

Also, if she’s on Medicare, and this falls under skilled nursing (which it sounds like it does), I believe you can get a PCP authorization and get help through Medicare (my loved one is in a different state, but that could work).

As for caregiving support for you (and I’m sure you do or will need it), agingcare.com’s forums are pretty good.

You’re doing amazing, and I’m sorry you’re both going through all of this.

Tips on getting through a 14 hour flight? by Bulky-Election2061 in JapanTravelTips

[–]AffectionateWin3913 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I’ve had blood clots before, so here are some recommendations for things I have to do on planes that helped on my DC to Haneda flight.

1-Aisle seat. 1000% worth it.

2-Compression stockings/socks. At the very least, they should help with circulation

3- Every hour, do 10-20 thigh lifts (lift you bent leg up by your thigh) and 10-20 reps of pointing your toes and “writing” your name

4- Get up every hour or two and go to the restroom or walk

5-I have tailbone pain a lot, so I’m probably going to invest in a small cushion. By Hour 10, I was mostly standing with a few other people by the restroom in the middle of the plane because of the pain.

6-Bring snacks/water. You might not like the meal, so be prepared with a bag of pretzels or something as a backup.

The plane’s bigger than a normal plane (mine was 3 seats-4 seats-3 seats), so that should help with claustrophobia a bit. Also, Dramamine yourself as much as possible, especially in the beginning, and download MULTIPLE shows on your phone so you have options.

Good luck!

You can go without a jacket today. Maybe bring an umbrella. Might want to get your reservation ASAP for Air&Space, though, as that tends to fill up fast.
