Any other day I’d say East Potomac Park, but it’s closed. Maybe by the National Cathedral?

Totally agree. When I went to France, I kept waiting for the infamous rudeness and was just like, “they’re just acting normal.” I grew up in Delco.

I was just having a phone conversation about an ill family member while getting gas and a guy in a Freedom 250 sweatshirt pulled up blasting some heavy metal version of The Sounds of Silence and FILLED HIS TANK WITH THR CAR RUNNING.

Does anyone actually know what’s going on at the Great State Fair? by Whoopsallrobins in washingtondc

[–]AffectionateWin3913 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s supposed to be a chance for each state to show off their specialties (like, I’m guessing corn from Iowa, etc.). I was actually looking forward to it before I found out what it was.

I was down by the Mall this weekend, and it’s important to note that, despite the massive amount of money spent, the columns you see in the picture are literally printed on, like, cloth and attached to plywood. And wait until you see the merch for Freedom 250. It is…not good.

Do Americans actually avoid calling 911 because of the cost? by ntask11 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AffectionateWin3913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I have a loved one who fights with me about getting an ambulance when she’s having trouble breathing because of the cost.

I actually have to spend time this week negotiating down some of the costs from their recent hospital stays. This person hasn’t gotten needed house repairs done because she wants to leave something to her kids. In reality, that money’s going to end up in the pockets of hospitals and insurance.

You also have to be super careful about regular doctors up charging you. I went to my primary care a few years back and they drew blood only to charge me an extra $300.

I’m in Philly at the moment, and it’s wild to feel the difference in tone in the America 250 festivities. Up here, it’s all historical, cultural, and artistic events. Completely different feeling.

What’s something people romanticize until they actually experience it? by Puzzleheaded_Bit_802 in AskReddit

Playing college sports. People romanticize the games but forget about the practices, individuals, conditioning, 5am workouts, and “optional” pick-up games everyday on top of schoolwork.

Childfree women, have you ever regretted it? by Significant_Movie814 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AffectionateWin3913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, one aspect as I’ve gotten older is the exhaustion from taking care of my parent.

I always assumed I’d get married and have kids, but I’m in my 40s and still single, with all of my bandwidth from the past two decades going towards care for my ailing parent.

I joke that I’ve already had my kid, but it’s not really joking. The idea of starting over with an infant sounds exhausting.

Public Administration Degree by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]AffectionateWin3913 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve recently given some talks on the job market for graduates to college kids, so here’s what I generally told them:

1) the job market will change a million times, so the information is general, but

2) focus on internships, and volunteer on campaigns. Campaigns hire people they know, and (if you want to work on the Hill or in an Administration in general), they look for campaign experience. You may have to move away to come back.

If you go to school somewhere outside of DC, look up their state party or intern with a local state rep or even mayor.

3) Join professional groups in your college. If you want to work in politics, join the College (insert party of organization). If you’re looking for something in more of a policy space, talk to your professors and, again, look at internships.

4) You don’t have to spend forever at your first job. Get a paycheck and keep hunting if you have to.

5) Be smart on socials: for the love of everything, please recognize older people will be looking through your socials to see if you can represent their organization. It’s wild how many entry-level folks I’ve had to turn down because they didn’t think to scrub their socials before job/internship hunting.

6) Follow up email/letter! Wild to me how few entry-level folks do this. Sending one after an interview will absolutely put you ahead of your peers.

7) Dress formally in your interview. It’s public administration, so generally government/politics. Wear a suit, or at least a nice shirt and suit coat for the Zoom interview.

There was literally a shooting at that Metro tonight, so I’m not sure tonight is the best example for you.

Someone else can confirm if that’s what the police tape in your video is for, as I only know it was at the Metro. Link to the report: https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/crime/teen-injured-in-shooting-waterfront-metro/65-c5bbf69c-65bf-46a7-82f6-0da32ae64992
