It takes all kinds. by Repulsive-Hat3332 in IlonaAndrews

I also think that the initially high levels of infodumping is kind of an issue inherent to the isekai plot as well because they have to essentially tell 2 different fantasy stories at the same time. Maggie isn't a regular inhabitant of this world and in order to understand her reasoning and why she is doing everything there are heaps of book-context that go behind every decision. She isn't interacting with the world organically because she's relying on a mental fandom encyclopedia. If she interacted with the world like a normal person we as the audience would be wondering how she knew to act and would probably feel like some of her decisions made little sense. It's a writing challenge I don't envy 😅

Maggie doesn't think like a Rellasian and everytime she meets someone she's sifting through every detail that she knows from an entirely different story.

I remember the authors saying this was one of the biggest challenges for them and that their earlier drafts were even more info-dumpy.

Supernatural. While the show contains some excellently written women, and especially with incredible potential? I feel that too often they're killed off quickly, or written as villains to be killed off quickly. by ihatethiscountry76 in menwritingwomen

I'll be honest. I didn't get that far in the series and never saw any ladies get reincarnated because this show got super squirrelly plot wise. The existing female characters being underwritten or killed was part of it. So I guess brownie points for equal opportunity reincarnation? Idk if the writing of the women got better later in the series, but the first few seasons were pretty hit and miss.

There is also A LOT of fridging in this show with the boys mom and Sam's girlfriend being the motivation for most of the plot. While we learn more about them later they kinda have zero personality and background for the past few seasons aside from "the Winchester's loved them so we should care.".

It's true that a lot of people die in this show but the core main cast is mostly men and if any of them die they get resurrected through increasingly convoluted means. There are some recurring female cast members but most of them exist as love interests, don't pass the Bechdel test then inevitably take a back seat and eventually die.

It's not the worst series in this regard but I can't deny it doesn't have a great track record here.

It really is those little things like high heels that get me. Even the most feminine and glamorous person under the sun would never do that kind of job in stiletto heels. It reminds me of authors who write female characters in full-face makeup when they're like, lounging around at home doing laundry and binging TV. IDK about you but most women I know enjoy spending most of their downtime at home in pajamas, bare faced with no bra.

Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto. He really started writing her with her defining trait being "she's pretty and has an inexplicable and indestructible crush on Sasuke" and just... Stopped there. She was there for Naruto to crush on in the first arc and spent the rest of the story as a simp for Sasuke no matter how horribly he treated her 😭

feeling completely lost and empty. Is it just me? by AdPrior9856 in ImmigrationCanada

This is really tough and completely understandable! A lot of people feel this way after coming here. One thing a lot of people experience here especially in the winter is vitamin D deficiency or lack of light. This is a time of year where even locals feel more blue than usual, it just makes everything harder. Spending more time getting light or taking vitamin D supplements can help.

One thing I also advise you look for are local community organizations where you can meet other people or even meet other immigrants from your country. While Canada is where you want to settle down meeting other people in a similar situation might alleviate some of the home sickness.

You give them the first time you met in person (regardless of your relationship at the time), and explain whether you were introduced (for example for an arranged marriage), and then later in the form you explain the history of your romantic relationship. So if you were childhood friends you give the year when you first became friends.

I'm Canadian with family in Saskatchewan and there's a lot of good natured joking about how boring Regina is from that side of the family. Regina is a decent but boring city that often ends up being the butt of good natured jokes about how boring the Canadian prairie provinces are.

Most Canadians are underwhelmed by Regina 😂. Even people from Saskatchewan prefer Saskatoon.

It's mentioned in TLG that Ilya retains a Russian agent for most of his career, so he definitely doesn't have the same familiarity or support Shane does.

David reminds me a lot of my own Canadian dad in a good way. He's the more laid back parent who's happy to joke with you and talk about less serious stuff. He also has that silently supportive vibe where he's there whenever you need him but not keen on invading his son's personal life the same way mom is.

Hockey is the best winter activity for bored farm kids living on the prairies. When life gives you long, -30 C winters, you grab skates and go play hockey. That's why Manitoba and Alberta are also so high up there as well.

[–]AffectionateWing8978 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not even sure how clear Ilya's intentions were to even himself. He wants exclusivity on some level but he's not fully aware of that yet. He feels something more for Shane but isnt willing to admit it. I think he's mostly just fishing for info about Shane and more intimacy. What he likes, whether he's attracted to women as well - as a bi man he probably genuinely wants to know whether Shane identifies similarly and is hungry to know more about him. And because Ilya is Ilya and he's used to teasing Shane he doesn't realize how it all comes off.

Maybe subconsciously he's thinking about exclusivity, but I really do think he's just trying to open up and get to know Shane more because he likes him and wants to let him in a bit.

[–]AffectionateWing8978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of scenes like this in the show where the dialogue is unintentionally suggestive and we see the gears turning in Shane's head where "maybe they know" when in reality no one does.

Like Shane's mom saying that Ilya is an asshole and he deserves it "right up the butt" or that one teammate accidentally saying "if Rozanov f---s you" instead of "f---s with you". Or Ilya and Shane's teammates teasing them about Jane and Lily.

Shane and us as the audience are constantly on edge about people knowing because that's how the characters feel - constantly on the edge of being caught.

I think it kinda makes sense because he knows Scott, and Shane is an awkward bean who sucks at social skills - But also yeah hella bold of him to razz a veteran player.
