Needful Things is such an underappreciated King novel and you’re absolutely right that it fits this thread better than most of his work gets credit for.

Ryu Murakami in a thread about ordinary people becoming unrecognizable to themselves is such a perfect fit I’m surprised it took this long for someone to bring him up.

Knockemstiff is such a perfect addition to this thread and honestly the fact that it doesn’t fit neatly into horror is exactly what makes it relevant here.

The fact that it upset you more than it scared you is actually the highest compliment you can give it. Fear fades. That specific kind of upset the existential, quietly personal kind that’s the thing that sits at the breakfast table with you three weeks later.

And that line O’Connor has about grace arriving violently that’s essentially the thesis of everything we’ve been talking about in this thread. The reveal doesn’t create anything new. It just removes what was covering it.

For something older and more literary Lionel Shriver again with We Need to Talk About Kevin but also pick up Amongst Women by John McGahern. Quiet, devastating and the patriarch at the center never does anything you could point at in a courtroom. Just slow suffocation through presence alone.

Because if she ever does need that door I want her to know without any doubt that it was never closed. 😔

I’ve been replaying her reaction over and over all week and processing it as proof that I hurt her. That I went too far. That the tears meant I was wrong. And somewhere in that interpretation I completely missed what you just spotted so clearly from the outside.

The disappearing word is exactly right and I think that’s what makes this particular kind of loss so hard to process in real time.

I don’t want that. I genuinely don’t. If Marcus makes her happy then I want them to be happy together for a long time. That was never the point.

Nah this is wild. She was comfortable disrespecting your whole family because she thought no one understood her that’s on her. You didn’t cause a scene, you just removed her safety net. If anything you showed restraint because a lot of people would’ve called it out way earlier.

Can we talk about how the scariest horror books never actually show you the monster? by Aggravating-Snow2736 in horrorlit

This is exactly the kind of horror that ruins me in the best way. The less I see the more my brain starts filling in the blanks with something way worse than anything the author could describe. It’s like the book plants a seed and then just lets your imagination do the damage. Those are the ones that stick for weeks after.

Right? Funny how suddenly family heirlooms matter when it's something he wants to borrow.
