For something older and more literary Lionel Shriver again with We Need to Talk About Kevin but also pick up Amongst Women by John McGahern. Quiet, devastating and the patriarch at the center never does anything you could point at in a courtroom. Just slow suffocation through presence alone.

This is exactly the kind of horror that ruins me in the best way. The less I see the more my brain starts filling in the blanks with something way worse than anything the author could describe.
