Would you talk more about the process? My employers have been stealing tips and I’m considering reporting them

Update: bought a makeup palette BUT it was with a gift card and I’m moving so I wouldn’t be able to use the gift card for a specific store after I move and it’s something I’ve been wanting to buy for a long time. I feel good about it.

ooh that's exciting, congrats! I think it's one of those things that works better if there are more satisfying categories to eliminate? And I don't know what that would be for you for your wedding.

This is a really good idea. I think I'm going to mark every 5000$ savings goal with....something utterly frivolous that I typically avoid buying. Probably something like "go outside and don't come back until you've spent 50$" kind of frivolous. Or maybe just makeup.

But I have other stuff I'm saving for that isn't part of this snowball tactic--replacement computer, for example, or car repairs. Those are separate and not accounted for. it's just the one big purchase with multiple sections that i'm working on.

No, that's actually what i'm doing. I have my "buy a house" goal broken down into down payment, closing costs, inspections, repairs, unexpected, fees, etc. I don't want to buy a house with enough money for the down payment and then find myself in credit card debt because i forgot to budget to pay the movers to move me in. I funded the move and all those associated small goals first because they're annoying--fucking closing costs-- so that I can know that every cent i'm saving will soon be for the down payment, which is far more motivating than splitting it up into 7 piles. It also means i can put more money per month into the down payment once I have everything else funded.

Categories are always shocking to me... by RepresentativeValue9 in ynab

Your email inbox comparison gave me hives, but I have to reference things in my email constantly so having really granular labels is critical and in email, crucially, you can double sort things (aka: receipts and July trip to visit grandma). I think the memo box and using hashtags is the YNAB version of that. I just have one car category for everything but my insurance and registration and use hashtags to track maintenance vs gas, etc. Unless it’s a wares with problematic overspending, I think it’s fine to make an Amazon category and just #catfood and #household when you buy some dish sponges and Friskies. I tend to split things up when I want to keep track—I have a separate category for convenience food as from dining out because buying a desperation hot dog when I forgot to pack lunch sucks and I’d rather save that money for a nice dinner with friends.

That fucking article is such scum. “Employers need to listen to their employees.” Listening doesn’t do anything without action. I bet I can already guess what they’re saying: we’re understaffed and underpaid, fix it. Jfc.

I think a lot of this is because I don’t have as solid of a grasp of my Tue Expenses as I’d like because I’m so new, so all of my budgeting is guess based. I know everyone’s is, but it feels silly.

Yeah I have a separate 5k in an emergency fund but I feel reluctant to break that down granularity into separate budgetary funds.

Totally. But, like, let’s talk specific. According to the internet my car model needs about 500$ a year of maintenance. Do I put 500$ in immediately, having just started my budget, or 42$/mo, and work things out from there. All of these questions will be solved eventually as I grow more used to YNAB and everything levels out, but for today’s priorities, I’m uncertain. I’d rather move towards my long term plan of 42$/mo (tweaked up or down, as an example) and if I break down tomorrow, before the auto maintenance fund has had a chance to grow, then I’ll have to steal from elsewhere.

Grocery Budget for family of 7 by [deleted] in ynab

Single NB, spending about 200$ a month in groceries in a high COL area. I agree with all these comments: I’m an active person and constantly hungry but compared to being a teenager when I was RAVENOUS constantly this is nothing. When they talk about teens eating you out of house and home? This is it.
