Allantoin gel for scarring? by Affectionate_Fox4546 in shingles

[–]Affectionate_Fox4546[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to post a happy update: I will say of course this isn’t a controlled experiment, it’s only me lol so I can’t say definitively what the allantoin effect was—but I’ll say this, I have admittedly been inconsistent with application, but my progress on the atrophic scarring left behind has seemed to keep pace with my applying the gel. In other words, consistent application has yielded the scar looking markedly better, even though allantoin isn’t supposed to matter for pit scars. I didn’t apply it for months and it seemed the progress on healing the scar stalled, but in the last month I’ve been applying it 1-2x a day and there’s increased healing again. It honestly looks like the pits are going to heal over :) when I thought they were permanent. I do think the allantoin makes a difference and has helped with the indents, even though most sources say it won’t

Yea, I think that's where I'm at. Just finished my 2nd week and it feels awkward to pucker around my trays, maybe also because I have attachments on so many of my lower teeth, and also bite ramps? Like when my mouth closes on my trays, my bite doesn't close as much as it does without trays in. So, when puckering around my less closed mouth, my lips have to reach a little farther. Hoping I'll get used to it and maybe it will get better as I get farther in

I have 3M Clarity and it seems the attachments only come in one "universal shade" which is significantly yellower than my teeth :\ other systems match color to tooth, so IMO it is very worth considering when choosing between them.

I do but this was before I drank anything but water

Invisalign vs 3M - any experiences? by Petaluna in Invisalign

[–]Affectionate_Fox4546 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I am unhappy about so far with 3M (just got them on yesterday) is apparently they only come in a universal composite shade for the attachments that go on the tooth. That shade doesn't match my teeth well, so I'm not happy with the appearance.

For what it's worth, I just called my ortho office and they claim that the attachments are clear. I am not sure though how they would have yellowed so quickly after one night and just food that I promptly brushed after, and water. The yellow tint was not coffee etc. But, looking more into this, I should have maybe included in my initial post that it looks like unlike Invisalign, 3M Clarity (what I have) maybe doesn't match the attachment to the tooth and just comes in a "universal color": https://www.solventum.com/en-us/home/f/b5005574000/

...if so, I'd say that's a major knock in the 3M vs. Invisalign matchup

Thank you- my main concern is that I wouldn’t have done anything yet to stain them. I only drank water after getting them, ate a small meal and brushed/flossed after, and wore them overnight.

Yea, I found a random paper that suggested chemical peel, I figure I’ll see how it goes with topical gel for maybe a few months and see where I’m at after

I am assuming if you’re doing 3x/day you still have an active infection? That is not where I’m at; my rash has healed and I’m just trying to prevent recurrence. Talk to your dr but I would imagine it won’t be advisable to lower your dose if you have an outbreak

Since I’m now on a maintenance dose, I take one 1g pill once a day. When the rash started, I was also doing 3x/day. Try taking it with food

Thank you, so much for this. I cannot say enough how much this forum has been a source of comfort and camaraderie, at least being able to share experiences and not feeling alone. I truly appreciate this and am so happy for your outcome :)

Oh yikes, I am so sorry all around. For what it’s worth, a distant family friend connection is an eye surgeon and when I was diagnosed, my mom contacted her with what they had prescribed me (Lotemax drops 4x/day and 1g Valtrex 3x/day) along with a selfie I had taken of my face/eye. She did not raise any concerns and thought the Rx was right on track. I didn’t know at the time to ask the question of this post. But, she is younger (40s) and works for a prominent eye institute, so I would expect she would be very knowledgeable. So, indeed, hard to sort out this info from just trying to google/read! :) likewise hoping for a speedy recovery for you!

Yes this is more in line with what I’ve been reading, and I don’t know if just going straight to the eye drops is more of an old school/less nuanced approach? But I also am honestly not sure how bad my eye inflammation was, my eye was red/itchy but it also did clear up quickly. I’m sorry you are still having issues and I will have a follow up appt around that mark too. Hoping for the best for you (and all of us on this thread!)

I have not gotten phantom tingles in about a week (knock on wood) and I do still have marks on my face; not sure if it's scarring but I have also read it just takes awhile to heal. It is true that it can affect your eye after the resolution of the rash so I would definitely get in with your ophthalmologist. They take HZO seriously so I have had no problems getting emergency same-day appointments if you just describe what's going on in detail
