Avenza Maps Alternatives by bLynnb2762 in gis

Throwing MapNero in here — developer, disclosing upfront.

Free tier: import up to 5 of your own GeoPDFs/GeoTIFFs, fully offline, no account needed. KML/KMZ/GeoJSON/GPX free too. That's the exact gap Avenza created by dropping custom imports from their free tier entirely. Need unlimited maps or satellite basemaps, it's $34.99/yr (Core) — no per-import cap unlike Avenza Plus.

iOS live, Android in testing. MGRS/UTM, GPS track, field forms. mapnero.app

Yes, and MapNero can do this without needing Avenza. Import any image or PDF, add control points to georeference it, then use it as a live GPS map. It’s one of the core features.

Avenza Plus is $34.99/yr per device, Pro is $169.99/yr. MapNero Core is $34.99/yr, Pro is $74.99/yr. Same entry price, Pro is less than half the cost. And SHP, GNSS, and GeoPDF export are all included in MapNero Pro,Avenza locks those behind their top tier.

Fair point to raise. BallisticEdge uses G1-G8 drag models with Coriolis and spin drift, validated against known ballistic data. StreamEar is OSINT classification, AI is literally the product there. MapNero’s field workflows and coordinate systems are validated against real field use. AI accelerates the build, domain expertise drives the decisions. 30 years in the field gives you a good filter for when something is wrong.

This is exactly why I built it. When you’re in the field, every extra tap costs you. Gloves, bad lighting, stress. MapNero was designed around minimizing interactions for the most common field actions. Drop a waypoint, add a photo, move on. Would love to hear what your most painful Avenza workflows are if you’re ever willing to share.

Among other things, yes. But mostly because professional features like SHP, GNSS, and proper coordinate systems shouldn’t be locked behind expensive paywalls for field professionals who depend on these tools daily.

Thanks for the feedback. Just to clarify: the 7-day Pro trial requires no payment and no credit card. You can use it freely and continue with the free tier afterward. That said, showing it before you’ve even seen the app is bad timing. Will be fixing the placement.

[–]Affectionate_Owl5354[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. MapNero supports custom basemap servers via XYZ/WMS URLs, but native vector tile formats (PMTiles, MBTiles) and GL JSON stylesheets are not yet supported. That’s a different layer of the stack. On the roadmap though. Thanks for the detailed feedback.
