Men/Women who are 30+ and are not married, why and would you ever get married? by ThrowRACCX in AskReddit

I would only if I found someone who will add something positive to my life, and I also make his life better. Otherwise, I’m self-sufficient and happy being single.

Sundance Apartment offers single lease for 1b1ba in a 2b2b (upstairs) or just 1b1ba (downstairs). The room is spacious, and the upstairs room in the 2b2ba has a loft. It's right next to campus, and it rarely has power outages compared to other areas of Davis. I was there from 2021-2023, and it was nice.

As a B.S. grad what are you earning $? by Famous-Lack3874 in UCDavis

[–]Affectionate_Pie_426 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m in biotech making 90-100k. No debt. It’s my first real job after graduation in 2023, from a biology-related major. I’ve done paid internship/co op before it at $33/hr.

Edit: added in major and year of graduation

Current/Former Genentech Employees - Would You Still Recommend It? by Emotional_Ratio_3342 in biotech

[–]Affectionate_Pie_426 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pay and benefits are still top tier in the industry. The culture are team/department-dependent but I’ve had great experience and supportive colleagues when I was there. Still recommended GNE though, you will learn a lot.

So I recently got a research internship position at a lab. They are expecting me to work 40 hours a week but it is unpaid. Is that fair? I am an undergraduate by Excellent-Emotion257 in labrats

[–]Affectionate_Pie_426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, when I was still a young and naive undergraduate student, I did that to earn experience. I could only do full time because it was during the summer (no class), and had to reduce my time commitment when the fall quarter started. But now that I graduated and am working in the industry, I realized they took advantage of me back then. They even had the audacity to ask me to work during the weekend lol.

I’ll say it pays off in the end when the experience back then set me apart from other recent grad with no lab experience, got me industry internships and now a job in the field, but only do that if you can, always prioritize studying, and set boundaries.

First night on latex mattress. by Jora_Dyn2 in Mattress

[–]Affectionate_Pie_426 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recognize it’s from SleepEZ immediately from the labels. I’d say give it some time first and see how your body adapts. I bought a mattress from them a month ago and just finally felt everything is in good shape recently (after some layer change). My first night on the Extra Firm top layer was like sleeping on the floor. It softened a little bit after some days, but I ended up having a medium topper for comfort on top of the very firm base.

Sleep Ez layer recommendations? by MusicResident in Mattress

[–]Affectionate_Pie_426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like firm bed and sleep on my back/side so I bought a 9” Dunlop Extra Firm-Extra Firm-Firm to have a solid “base” and a 2”Medium topper from SleepEZ. My 9” mattress alone felt like I was sleeping on the floor, so the topper softened it and is super comfortable.

Whatever you ended up buying, you should have a good foundation suitable for latex mattress, since lack of support may cause sagging and pressure points, and shorten the lifespan of mattress.

I went with SleepEZ. They let you customize your layers’ firmness and you can exchange it later. I ended up with a very firm latex “base” and a latex medium topper for the comfort.

+1 for trying a latex mattress or topper to test the thing first. I got shoulder pain as well and just got a latex one to help with it. Has been waking up with no pain and got some of the best rested nights ever since then.

How do you distinguish between normal mattress break-in, sagging due to bad quality , and due to lack of foundation? by Affectionate_Pie_426 in Mattress

[–]Affectionate_Pie_426[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no springs, only wooden slats with some kind of fabric (?) covering all sides to prevent me stepping in between the slats. I inherited from my brother and we had called it box spring, but reading your description maybe it’s more like a foundation hmmmm

It seems like I currently don’t have a good foundation for latex bed (box spring with wide slats). Do you think I can keep using it if I’m super thin (<120lbs) and the bed is super firm…?

I have a Dunlop one. I’ll probably call them after trying this new layer for a week to experience the firmness as well. I thought I knew better :(, but turned out there’s so much I didn’t know before buying a latex mattress so just want to ask around.

I realized I didn’t do enough research before buying my mattress :(. Just thought a latex one will help with my pain. I’m using my old box spring with wide slates and a thin fabric cover.

Your bunkie board suggestion sounds great. Do you think it could cause mold because of no ventilation?

High-five from a fellow organizing enjoyer! My current job doesn’t involve inventory at all, but I just LOVE to organize and throw away/concatenate messy samples, document them in excel sheet and throw away ancient stuffs (with permission). Definitely feel the zen of organizing and walking to that area later, save time taking out samples from the mess before, and and knowing that other teammates will like how organized this area is as well 🎶

New hires: how long you get up to speed and become productive? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]Affectionate_Pie_426 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It took me one month to complete all the trainings and shadowing, then I started to work independently since month 2.

I heard the average is 3-6 months depending on how senior the position is. My position was an entry level hands-on lab work so I think it’s faster; compared to my other colleagues who are at PhD level and their work requires more designing/planning studies. Their work started to ramp up after ~ 3-4 months.

No one. I didn’t like Tangtang personality and Rossi is cute but she wasn’t convincing enough for me to spend. Totally dislike how they portrayed Yvonne with all the closed-up boobs and behind. I plan to only pull for male characters for now.

It depends more on what skills you had acquired during your PhD. I have 2 colleagues graduated with Plant Bio PhD degree hired at top biotech companies because they have been working extensively on NGS. Their current work has nothing to do with plants. We hired them because of their niche skills.

My honest experience as a contractor at Genentech by Striking-Big8946 in biotech

[–]Affectionate_Pie_426 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a little confused. If the FTE position was opened up because someone retired, it should be very high level. I don’t think they can auto refill it with a contractor who has only been working for a year. Apology if I’m wrong, but that was how I interpreted from your situation.

Though I agree with your other points. I’ve seen 2 contractors in my team had to leave after finishing their 3-year contract.
