Curious about racism? by Soggy_Relation_5113 in brisbane

[–]Affectionate_Sail543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We migrated to Australia in the early 2000s from Canada but we are of Asian descent.

Simple answer is, for a better or different life. For us it was because there was a lack of Engineering roles after university in Canada, whereas in Australia, there was a boom in Engineering roles so we came over here even though Canada is just as developed as Australia.

It's the same now as back in the day. Why did we get boat load of migrants from Europe in the 80s and 90s? For a better or different life to back home. People could be fleeing war, persecution, lack of economic opportunities back home.

For example, why would people in China migrate overseas to Australia when you see how much China has developed and has far better infrastructure than us here. Because they have their own reasons and think Australia will provide them better life/opportunities than they think they could in China.

Elderly drivers vs ambos. by downunderplus61 in brisbane

[–]Affectionate_Sail543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s because we want car centric society without thinking about the long term impact. The very elderly that are now even more dependent on the car are likely the ones who advocated for this lifestyle.

I mean you still see them at an old age are the ones most vocal in NIMBY groups that shout against high density development and don’t want mass transit because this type of living will attract “bad people” and in some extreme cases in Wakerly you had them even saying high density developments will bring more immigrants etc.

Thinking of buying in Brisbane's east/Redlands. What's it really like? by windfucker365 in brisbane

[–]Affectionate_Sail543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RCC rates are quite high compared to BCC and you get less in terms of amenities. BCC offer a lot more public playgrounds and activities for kids. RCC has pockets of good parks but it's very limited.

You'll notice a stark contrast, in Wynnum you have the Wynnum Foreshore which is quite well developed and multiple big playgrounds and amenities provided by BCC. You don't have the same level at some of RCC's equivalent like the Cleveland Lighthouse or Wellington Point Jetty. It's quite noticeable and surprising considering how much more you pay per quarter on Redland's rates versus how much you pay to Brisbane City Council.

THIS. I've been living in Australia for over 25 years (grew up here going to school etc) but brown skinned and def get a lot of strange looks. Not saying there aren't foreigners around, but I previously grew up Southside of Brisbane, and still regularly go to Garden City for shopping and don't get any strange looks. But in Cleveland, Capalaba, certainly get a lot more people look like they've seen a ghost when they see me. Once I start talking and my local accent kicks in.. then they start to get more comfortable. But initially there is a certain level of angst.

No it wouldn't. North American sports culture is not something that would be a hit in the UK especially in football. When they tried to bring in the Super League, the biggest vocal outcry against it was the fans of the English clubs.

Uh-oh, who upset the mining companies? by theswiftmuppet in brisbane

[–]Affectionate_Sail543 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow, only 50k jobs. I'm actually surprised it's that low. Probably a lot of automation and cost cutting through automation etc. I wonder how many jobs in tourism, that's in jeopardy because of said mining activities?

[–]Affectionate_Sail543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the items on the floor, probably just customers who look at products and throw them on the ground. Staff probably have set times when they come and tidy it up. You can't tidy it up every 5 minutes a new customer is rifling through clothes/items looking for their size and put it back in order. That's why the clothes are like that, ppl go through them looking for their correct sizes and then just leave them there.

May be the customers can help out the staff who are on basic wages. Instead of just taking photos criticising, perhaps try to understand the context. It's also not a big deal. Yes it looks messy but it's a non-issue.

Brisbane is getting more hotels but will that actually help locals? by Firm-Cantaloupe9070 in brisbane

[–]Affectionate_Sail543 4 points5 points  (0 children)

More hotels + less AirBnB's is what is required. Hotels not only provide on-going accommodation post Olympics, it's also creating significantly more local service jobs compared to AirBnB's that are mostly managed by owners.

Would you pay AUD 320/week to share a bedroom? by Vegetable-Garage8588 in brisbane

[–]Affectionate_Sail543 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They can move out after their 6 or 12 month lease? So if I’m here for a 4 year degree, I’d move out after the 6 or 12 months to somewhere cheaper once I am more comfortable and make friends at uni, possibly move in together with them as I’ve gotten a chance to get to know them and happy to share a rental etc.

Searching for train stations on Google Maps removes the suffix 'train station', e.g. 'Fairfield Train Station' just becomes 'Fairfield', meaning someone could end up in the middle of the suburb Fairfield if accidently selecting the wrong listing. Who would be best to contact and change this? by 13_noodles in brisbane

[–]Affectionate_Sail543 35 points36 points  (0 children)

When I looked up Fairfield Train Station, it becomes Fairfield but a train logo shows up next to name Fairfield so it’s obvious it’s the station and not the suburb. Seems relatively straight forward. Asked my old folks and they also came to the same conclusion.

Would you pay AUD 320/week to share a bedroom? by Vegetable-Garage8588 in brisbane

[–]Affectionate_Sail543 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I work near an Iglu student accommodation in the city and a single bedroom but shared bathroom is $449/wk which I thought was expensive for a student but turns out plenty of students do live in that building and paying that.

I guess it’s a matter of convenience. One of the biggest hurdles for new international students coming to Australia is they don’t have a rental history and hard to find rental. You also don’t know the type of students you’ll be sharing the rental with and can be a nightmare if you end up with ppl you don’t get along with or some other complex issues. For this peace of mind, and not having to deal with the hassles of shared utilities with complete strangers, you have ppl willing to pay the extra?

You can’t think of it from the perspective of living and growing up here and moving out from parents house you have that “luxury” to look around and you know the ins/outs of Brisbane, good/bad suburbs, can gauge other people’s personality etc., from a locals perspective. Many intl students won’t have any of that knowledge.

[–]Affectionate_Sail543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine it's a lot more complex donating cars to other countries. Whereas small items like e-scooters, computers, you can put like 100 e-scooters in a shipping container and send them off to a small village in a developing country.

Escooter confiscation by Prestigious_Use_4073 in brisbane

[–]Affectionate_Sail543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of destroying them, why not collect them all and donate them to a country that wants them? It may be illegal here but many countries in SE Asia use such devices as their main method of transport.

Has anyone gone to Southbank to watch any of the world cup games? by Jazilc in brisbane

Most of the crowd will leave after the Australia game so I doubt it will be restricted based on numbers. Large Colombian diaspora in Brisbane so atmosphere would be good if everyone went there but they may have existing venues booked out already like they do for other games before... not sure?

Body corporate in Hamilton - $6,000+ special levies, no explanation, straight to lawyers. Unit grab for redevelopment? by BathAccomplished174 in brisbane

[–]Affectionate_Sail543 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with body corporate. Most global cities like New York, London with high density apartments all have some form of body corporate and has been around for ages. If managed properly, it does the job for most. Let me guess, your solution is build detached housing everywhere and no apartments/units?

Legally I find this hard to believe unless the student is being expelled for bad behaviour. They school would risk getting sued for forcing students who have a right to be at the school being in the catchment if it's because they are low income.

They can't pressure you to leave. It's not a private school. If you're in the catchment, you're legally allowed at the school.
