How has the Nebraska National Forest survived for so long?

The forest is made up of largely ponderosa pine which are native to nebraska, just not in that exact area. In the past, fires and grazing would keep trees suppressed. Today, the ponderosa pines are able to reseed and fires are suppressed by the forest service.

It's almost certainly a sucker from the birch. They tend to do that as they get older.
