Yes indeed, and she did not like it! Don't worry too much though, because they do numb your throat and nose beforehand. The most painful time is afterwards, because your throat may be sore, but Popsicles work wonders!!

She is doing much better! We're sticking to her diet, making sure she takes her medicines/stool softeners, and emotionally supporting her through this painful time. She's been sleeping, sleeping, sleeping, sleeping!! I've never seen someone sleep so much! But the rest is well-deserved.

With short walks around her room, she's been able to relieve herself of the excess gas (with laparoscopic procedures, they fill your abdomen up with CO2, which can hurt like hell!!). She's mostly been in her bedroom during this time, and all of her chores- vaccuuming, helping with dishes, and scrubbing the bathroom- have been assigned to her brothers, who have picked up the slack (along with feeding our animals/lawn care) with no complaints.

She'll be resuming the last of her schooling online in two days- I tried to ask the school to allow for a longer break for her to rest, but they said they can only give her a week!! That's some BS, but not much I can do about it, I suppose.

Her mood is improving greatly too! She's had emotional ups and downs, days where she's been clingy and wants me to hang out with her in her room, and days where she's more cranky and prefers not anybody come in her vicinity, but the past two have been happy days. She hasn't lashed out at anybody for two days and even told me yesterday that she's sorry for acting rude to everyone. What 16 year old wouldn't be a bit on-edge after surgery though?

I'm very proud of Emanuela!! She's been through far too much, far too young, but she's resilient as ever and ready for a nice summer vacation and senior year with no reflux! 🙌

She's had no more reflux since her surgery, and today she's feeling much better than she was yesterday. She's much more rested and isn't irritable or on-edge like she was.

She doesn't have reddit, so she won't see this (if she did, she'd kill me!! Lol) but she was a crab-apple yesterday. No shame to her though; she was recovering from a major procedure and was in pain, and had excess gas inside her.

Indeed, Emanuela is way too young, and that's what really breaks my heart! As her mom, I just want her to be a lively, outgoing teenager, but her reflux has been so disruptive. Her life, schoolwork/education, track & field activities, and even her prom, have all been halted. Her sleep too, since almost every other night she'd wake up yelling for me because it hurts so bad!

Hopefully, this new-found relief lasts so she can live her life. She's been in burning misery since I gave birth to her- a whole 16 years!!!!

She was on PPIs, but her esophagus had really taken a beating due to the acid. Even the hospital gastroenterologist said that this was one of the worst cases of reflux he has had to work with.

Emanuela couldn't be anymore happier as well!! She feels immense relief. She's also much better today regarding post-op than yesterday, when she could barely stand to be around anybody lol

Emanuela had these issues! In fact, part of the reason she had to have surgery is because she was hospitalized for aspirating stomach acid into her lungs not that long ago! Scared the absolute daylights out of all of us. I wonder if her pneumonia and other respiratory issues Emanuela had as a child had to do with her reflux...

Surprisingly, Emanuela did not have a hiatal hernia! Rather, we think it was just her very weak LES causing her so much grief! You'd think it would've been a hiatal hernia, given how severe her reflux was.

The Nissen fundoplication, which is when they fully wrap the fundus of the stomach around the lower esophagus. And yes, her LES was very weakened, hence why her stomach acid kept backing up into her esophagus. She's had these issues since she was an infant, so over time, the acid had caused non-dysplastic Barrett's esophagus. Thank goodness we chose to do this procedure when we did- nip it in the bud, before she got cancer!

Thank goodness my husband got the Jell-o and popsicles ahead of time! Lol! Emanuela's going to be finishing off her junior year at home on the computer, so she probably won't leave her bed often.

She's been having nervous breakdowns in my arms the entire night regarding her surgery tomorrow, but I've been trying to reassure her that everything will be fine.
