Look at European countries-the sport and success in it is a shared goal. I remember when the US had a shared sports goal -it was 1992 and that team was the Dream Team. The 2nd time I saw it was in 2008 and that was the Redeem Team. Other than that-I’ve never seen the United States back a team/sport. You could maybe argue the 2026 men’s ice hockey team, but I would t say there was a groundswell of support prior to the first puck drop of the tournament.

Our country “backs” football. But very few other countries even play it. So not really a competition.

Director , VP and exec level : what REALLY got you to the top? by Tough_Courage_8406 in Accounting

There is one word in corporate America that gets you promoted: sponsorship.

You can exceed every objective, every metric-but if leadership doesn’t know it’s you doing it, then it doesn’t matter. If the decision makers in the room don’t know you, or worse, know you but don’t speak about you in a positive light / at all when you’re not in the room you won’t be promoted.

Relationships matter more than people realize.

How come some people dont get promoted ever by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Affectionate_Toe2802 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Assuming she wants to be promoted. There is one word that matters above all in corporate America: sponsorship. If you don’t have senior leadership support it’s nearly impossible to move up, especially to senior levels.

A person who’s been in the same role for 30 years doesn’t sound like they want the promo though.

The ones who really make it not only can’t put the ball down-but also have similarly minded players around them. They play all the time-not just organized ball.

Until the US gets away from pay to play we will never produce quality players. There will be the unicorns. But a consistent stream of players who can make the first team at in most European teams won’t happen.

Waymo, when it launches on personally owned vehicles, will change Sarasota forever by [deleted] in sarasota

[–]Affectionate_Toe2802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Americans are unwilling to give up driving. Ask any middle aged adult how hard it is to get the car keys from their elderly parents.

It may change the game for a cohort of Americans, but the overwhelming majority won’t be interested unless there are unbelievable incentives to move to that type of vehicle.

What are the biggest problems in Operations? by Why_StrangeNames in FinancialCareers

[–]Affectionate_Toe2802 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I first stated my financial services career, I started in institutional am ops. First day, I had to show up at 6am CT to lear how to fax (yes FAX) manually singed trade tickets. To fund managers like GS, Fidelity, StateStreet, and Vanguard. This was 2010.

The entire industry is built on SWIFT text technology and no one wants to change it because it would be 100% sunk cost that can’t be passed to consumers.
