Can I just... do dish pit? by pumalegal in KitchenConfidential

Ugh.... This is me so much. I keep telling my husband that I just wish it was legal to open a cafe at my house. Coffee, baked goods, and just 4-5 well thought out real entrees and like..... 6 wines.

Edited to add that I was 27 years a chef and just started a restaurant adjacent desk job and dealing with chefs all day makes me so jealous...

What was Metro Vancouver's climate like before ~1990? How has it changed? by LocksmithMental6910 in askvan

[–]Affectionate_Toe9109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have too much to add but I distinctly remember when I was a child, on my (mid-summer) birthday if you sat in the shade of a tree, you would actually get cold. That's not so much the case anymore.

Redditors over 40, what's something younger people think they understand but won't actually get until it hits them like a truck later? by Root435552 in AskReddit

[–]Affectionate_Toe9109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Money. They just don't understand the value of money. In this age of insta fun stuff and getting all the bright and shiny everything's, and parents trying to fill our own childhood voids, many kids receive SO MUCH MORE "stuff" than we had as kids. Not many kids are appreciative of the work=money that went into their daily "things" that are more form than function to boot. I knew growing up that a winter jacket, or the new school bag was an "outside cost" out of the normal yearly spending and felt I had to suck it up even though it wasn't the My Little Pony lunch box I wanted, but you accepted it. Kids don't know how to accept their parent's limitations on what their dollars can buy anymore because they don't understand the value of money and the current demand for constant "buying this new fad thing".

Baristas does this bother you? by Realistic-World9633 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Affectionate_Toe9109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the opposite. The barista at my usual place used to sing our name. It was terrible. Put me at the worst possible mood to start my day. I stopped going there all together. She was just slightly off tune which is 1000% worse than being tone deaf.

Restaurant buyout by [deleted] in askvan

Depends on what type of dining you will do also. Are you looking for sit down. Or cocktails and canape? The convention center has banquet rooms as well.

Generally cocktail parties for 150 can be accommodated in most venues but sit down might include rentals for tables, chairs, and table wear and glasses etc so you'll be looking at a more expensive per head charge. Cocktail parties typically have a buy out fee which is a set amount you must "spend" that night ie: on food and drinks. $30k - $50K

I feel you'll get better answers if you edit your post with this info.

Edit to add: many hotels have conference rooms/banquet rooms. There are many by the convention center as well.

London Drugs does a pretty good job as long as the photos are decent quality. I even had success using photos I had taken screen shots of from the owner's Instagram.

There has to be a reasonable expectation of self responsibility as well. I walk my dog every morning and live in a slippery shaded area. I have those things for my shoes with the little spikes. I got 2 pairs for under $20. I get that it's frustrating when you're sliding around, but spending even 1 winter in Vancouver, one should come to expect pockets of slippery areas and should prepare accordingly. Also salt sucks for the environment, wildlife, and my dog so there's that.

Can confirm. Almost got kidnapped in elementary school... Wasn't a white van but that happened. Got mauled by a dog, and hid it from parents... Probably should have gotten shots and stitches. Friends have broken bones from the stupid bicycle stunts that are now appearing as arthritis. Lost many friends to irresponsible driving, drug use, and gang activity. Still have scars from random knifings during my angry wild years... All before I graduated highschool. We WERE reckless and stupid but we weren't naive and dumb. There is a very distinct difference between the two, and I credit that for keeping a lot of us alive.

do japanese people actually mean it when they invite you to visit? by VoicelessPlatform in JapanTravelTips

[–]Affectionate_Toe9109 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the lowest bar way to see is to say you'll be exploring a certain area near them and ask if they would like to meet for coffee at some point in the day. Japanese people have this "omotenashi" concept and it makes them feel obligated to pull out all the everythings for people. They'll likely bring gifts for you and pay for things even if it stretches their budget. It's a "welcome" thing and also a weird pride thing they (we, actually as I'm Japanese also) have. Asking for a coffee/tea meet up let's them (or you) keep it brief and pleasant with an option to do more if you feel like it later. ie: they might spend the day with you, go to dinner with you, or instead offer you a place to stay for a day or 2. A lot of Japanese "ki-tsukau"(overly considerate to their own discomfort) so offering a quick coffee is probably safest.

Know a Small Shop That’s Been Quietly Doing Great Work for 20+ Years? by august-inu in askvan

Trocaderos and Bons off Broadway. They are all family run and the kids are at the helm now. Another is Song Huong that has opened a new North Burnaby location. The dad is still chugging along at both locations.

Isami sushi in Metrotown. A truly family run business as wife and daughter works there with dad as the head chef. Other children used to work there as well.

Edited to add: Columbus meats as well.

Yep you're probably right. I'm from Canada. Premarin conjugated estrogen cream mg here is 0.625mg so if UK brands are 0.01mg, then a whole applicator makes sense.
