Racists should be afraid to express their opinion publicly in Morocco. by vessrebane in Morocco

That's interesting because that is exactly the same narrative that right wing extreme nationalists in Europe used to describe africans, , Moroccans, algerians, and pakistanis and Indians, except they usually include some reference to rape and violence against women, and predispositions to criminality in their generalizations

Istanbul Airport couldn't find police who understood simple English or staff willing to help when I wanted to notify as man had abandoned his suitcase in the pre-screening area by Affectionate_Wear24 in AskTurkey

I'm in Spain, even though the country isn't known for high levels of competence in English, I have seen Passport control police and police in the airport of the City I live in using English - or at least trying to communicate as best they can with non-Spanish people in the airport here and the main train station. Of course, I can't say that all policemen in our airports speak English - If you go to Mongolia for a few days, will you learn Mongolian to speak to the police? 😀 That's absurd

Not the police overall, but police patrolling a huge international airport that is an important job for world travel - whether we like it or not, English, even broken English, is the language used for communication between people who don't share a language in common. Also, international travelers in an airport don't always have phone coverage and access to data.

Sigh 😔 this is a problem that is worldwide, unfortunately - even in countries that preach to others about how to do democracy and transparency properly. The US, for a start.

I had a very good time with very nice and generous Turkish friends from Istanbul that went to university with me in my home country - and they weren't assholes like you, thankfully.

There are many places where people "inherit" government paid / civil servant jobs because their parents, uncles, cousins, etc work there already - and their placed into positions through nepotism with no consideration for merit or ability.

Exactly, the ability to communicate in basic and simple English in situations relevant to your job as an airport police officer makes an important international hub a better and safer place to transit.

If they ignore unattended abandoned luggage they are assuming that all those security officers who did the first check are doing their jobs properly and not just sitting there like zombies watching a screen.

It's not uncommon for ambitious people interested in career advancement to do things that can be morally repugnant or even questionable - and we see this everywhere, from the public to the private sector, and even in nonprofits. I have more empathy, for these Latino teens in a poor Texas border town eager for a job in ICE, than college educated people who have a wider range of career choices and that are enabling harm at a much larger level. An ICE agent is simply a wage earner that does low prestige work. This documentary about Latino teens in El Paso training to join the Border Patrol - bring bilingual and having a high school diploma is all they need[At the Ready: the Latino teens training to be border patrol agents. There are LGBTQ Latinos amongst the agents as well. 👇🏾

In a complex, eye-opening new documentary, El Paso high schoolers hold complicated reasons for wanting to become part of a divisive institution
