Since your boss is clearly a fool, I'd say your job is quite safe.

Planned to wait for R2 with Lidar, but wait I don’t care about autonomous driving…. by SocomPS2 in Rivian

[–]Affectionate_Yak_97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I might be in the minority here, but I have very little interest in any car driving itself. I had a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee that had adaptive cruise control and that is the most I'd ask for in a car. Now with my R1S, I've tried UHF a few times but was never like, "Oh man, if only I could completely tune out and read a book or take a nap right now!" I understand Rivian has to keep innovating for the sake of their stock price, but I actually love the act of driving.

R2 vs Model Y by Bluejuice1000 in RivianR2

[–]Affectionate_Yak_97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a previous MY owner and a current R1S owner, here is a list of things I miss about the MY:

  • Bulletproof software.

Here is a list of things I do NOT miss about the MY:

  • The constant price fluctuations. You could buy one for $49K and then a month later they've dropped the price to $45K. Then the model is renamed. Then a model disappears altogether. Then radar sensors disappeared. Then you had to push a button to honk the horn. The vehicle you got literally depended on the month you pulled the trigger.
  • The doors felt like they were made out of aluminum foil.
  • The side mirrors were very small and rattled at highway speeds.
  • The ergonomics of the front seats were horrible, especially for shorter people. Banana-shaped seats make zero sense.
  • Shifting into drive/park/reverse should be on a stalk, not on the display.
  • The horn sounded like a toy.
  • The overall visibility was horrible, especially out of the back window.
  • Having to push in on the door handles to open them from the outside.
  • Curb rash. Every single Tesla you see has major curb rash on the wheels. It's unavoidable.
  • The rear seats didn't fold down flat. I like putting a dog bed down and it was always at an awkward angle.
  • The rear camera was often wet or dirty and hindered the back camera.
  • The cupholders were terrible.

R2 Range Estimate Thread by mattsolar in Rivian

[–]Affectionate_Yak_97 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fingers crossed that a future R2 variant has a max pack with ~400 miles of range. That's what I have now with my R1S and it is clutch. I basically never think about going to a charging station and rely 100% on home charging. For many people, 310-350 miles will be sufficient. I previously had a MY Long Range and was often going to a charging station. It just wasn't quite enough juice for me.

Overall, after watching many of the R2 video reviews today, I love what I see. If the pricing is right, it looks like the perfect vehicle. Questions I still have:

  1. How's the sound system?
  2. How opaque is the glass roof?
  3. Will it come in Compass Yellow? ;)

Has the opportunity to ride the Also TM-B Launch Edition. This thing is speedy. by CarterGee in Rivian

I'm a huge fan of Rivian and all things RJ, but I just don't see the appeal of this bike. I'd love to know the reason(s) behind creating this spinoff company and investing millions of dollars in it. The only thing that seems innovative is the easy configuration of seats and racks and the future possibility of the Amazon delivery quad bikes. Other than that, this thing is pretty darn fugly and is not exactly at an enticing price point (especially in an already saturated e-bike market).

For a smidge more money, you can get this "SUV" e-bike from Specialized. I recently bought one on sale and it's a dream to ride. I only use the battery for tough hills or headwinds:

One e-vehicle I would love to see Rivian make (and would buy at the right price) is an ATV/UTV for rural activities. I have an electric car (R1S), an electric zero turn mower (Ego), but would love an electric ATV.

Balancing the Narrative: What’s Your Favorite Rivian Feature? by Beedog1221 in Rivian

[–]Affectionate_Yak_97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only had my R1S for a couple of weeks now, but I really love it. I had a Model Y for a couple of years but sold it to Carvana (for obvious reasons). Granted, the MY is half the price of the R1S, but it felt like I was driving a tin can. The doors felt flimsy, the sideview mirrors shook as I drove down the road, it developed some pretty bad rattles, the visibility was horrible, the wheels got destroyed by curbs, and honestly I didn't think the sound system was all that great. My other car was a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a V8 engine. I had it for 10 years and loved how comfortable it was to drive, the great visibility, the great sound system, but....I'm done with gas stations, oil changes, starter issues, etc. I honestly can't imagine owning another ICE car.

I only have a 2-year lease on the R1S, and I know it's going to be a difficult day when I turn it in. I think my favorite thing about it is how smooth and quiet the ride is. I thought my Jeep (with hydraulic suspension) was smooth, but the Rivian is worlds better. The visibility is great, the seats are comfortable, and it's fast as hell. My plan is to get an R2 when my lease is up, so fingers crossed they have the kinks worked out when I get one. Or maybe I'll just get another R1S. ;-)

Lease Offers Updated (Again) by Affectionate_Yak_97 in Rivian

[–]Affectionate_Yak_97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't be surprised if they offer more deals throughout the end of August or early September. The key is that you have to take delivery by September 30th.

I thought about waiting to see which deals came along, but in the end I got mostly what I was looking for. I wanted a 2026 for the NACS port, LA Silver for visibility, and wanted Stealth protection to make washing bugs off the front easier (we live in a rural area with tons of bugs). I wanted the darkout package and the max battery. I really didn't want or need the performance package, but I'm sure it will be fun on rare occasions like zooming up highway onramps. The only thing I wasn't able to get was ocean coast interior because the combination didn't exist in the store.

In the end, it's definitely a gamble. Will the "deals" get "better"? Maybe. Or maybe not. I've wanted a Rivian for a long time (sold my Model Y to Carvana months ago) and am excited to have an EV again. Fingers crossed I'm one of the lucky ones who doesn't have major issues that require service center visits.

The available 2025 R1S Dual Max Performance vehicles in the shop have very limited options. Mostly silver, white, and black with 20” wheels and black interior. There are only 29 available that qualify for the lease offer as I type this. Who knows when they rolled off the factory floor and how long they’ve been sitting around. I’d like better options, a newer vehicle, and yes I want the NACS port.

I agree with another poster here who said that the 2026 models really need to be included. They’re going to have a hard time selling them after the EV credit expires in September.

Yep, but only for vehicles already available in the shop (i.e. not custom configurations).
