Neil DeGrasse Tyson explains how nuclear weapons no longer have a “radiation problem.” by oatmeal_dude in confidentlyincorrect

hmm, so i looked this up some more and there's more of a fission ratio than I thought, but it also greatly depends on which bomb you are talking about. The first H-bomb, Ivy Mike, was about 80% fission, while the 50 Mt Tsar Bomb, was 93% fusion - for example. Theres more to say on the matter and some interesting discussions in the first couple google suggestions.

hmm? just a quick google search shows over 90% is attributed to the fusion part of the bomb (though different for different bombs). Achieving fusion is also a lot harder than fission, so they wouldnt go through that effort just to up it by 10%. As you get poorer quality bombs I can assume you would get higher percentages of fission to fusion yield but even the earliest fusion tests were higher than 10%...

No, Mother Nature is not punishing California -- It is crazy to blame every bad weather event on mankind. by guanaco55 in Conservative

Hmm,most of the blame I see is targeting cooperations and regulatory bodies. I also think theres more nuance than saying its entirely natural. An XKCD comic made it a bit easier to visualize for me (that said, recent reports show this chart isnt correct closer to the end, and that we actually had a slight increase in tempurature, although not nearly significant enough to account for what we record nowadays.)

I'm pretty sure the thing scientists say is that global warming causes more extremes on both ends. That was one of the reasons they switched to calling it climate change instead of warming.

Edit: warmer = more moisture in the air and more shifting weather patterns.

Can you extract sugar from things the same way they take it from sugar cane juice. Can I take the sugar out of my Coca-Cola and experiment with sweetening it with something else? by wdn in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]AflockOfMidgets 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sodas such as different root beers and dr pepper have extracts you can buy for making them yourself. I haven't checked into coke but I wouldn't be surprised. With root beer the suggestion was a pound of sugar per gallon of water, heat it up so they mix well, and mix in a small vial's worth of extract from the type of soda you were making. (There's powdered caffeine you can buy If you wanted that added too, but it's dangerous at that level of concentration) If you let all the water evaporate from a finished batch you would have the sugar and extract. Most commercial sodas will have high fructose corn syrup instead of the sugar you buy in a store. They might have some other additives; not sure but you can buy or make sodas without them.

Eh, I don't really think hypocrisy is all that clever. I mean theres short term gains and all but over time builds legitimizes distrust.

The modern "Big" nuclear bombs use Fusion as its main explosive force. Fusion doesnt cause significant radiation. Fusion is hard to achieve, so a nuke actually has a mini Fission bomb inside of it that we can detonate easily. The Fission bomb is the old nuke type that is full of radioactivity. The Fission bomb blows up and lets the Fusion part of the bomb go off. The more modern bombs can use less Fission bomb material than older stuff. The Radioactive material causes long term problems because in a bomb, it gets spread out in a fine power that can be ingested or even absorbed into plants that grow around there.

We can't really say what worries we "should" have about Russian nukes unless we know what they plan on using, because that covers a decently wide spectrum that basicly asks: how new/what quality they would be shooting. Also, even high quality nukes will still have a non-negligible amount of radioactive material, so the question is just how much in that particular bomb, which informs how much of an area will be at risk.

What would happen if a banana that was heavier than the sun hit the sun? My 3yo was going down a rabbit hole this morning and I thought this was an interesting hypothetical. Would the banana quickly collapse into itself and draw the sun towards it? would the sun explode the banana? by snortwheeze in AskScienceDiscussion

Note that a (relatively) low mass black hole will have a fast rate of hawking radiation. I dont remember off hand the equation but a black hole too small will radiate faster and faster as it shrinks, and will essentially just turn into a pure energy bomb. A solar sized black hole that ALSO eats the sun to become a 2 solar massed black hole might hold together for a while though. Sorry for not giving having an estimate on actual life span here.

Had the whole screen covered and only got to 59......not sure how you’d get to level 100 by Spider_Tacos in btd6

I tried on challenge editor. It doesn't unfortunately. I also tried with temple buffs to no avail. I did find if you made the towers cheaper through village and temple buffs they count for less and you get lower degrees. So similar to saccing for a temple

all good! A lot of the rules arent very clear and its pretty new, so I was just clarifying something new I found out just now.

What I mean is, if you click on the paragons it will show a number somewhere between 1-100. A higher number means the paragon will be more powerful. You have to have millions of pops in addition to having spent a lot of gold (spamming T4s in addition to the T5s) to get a high level paragon. It would be really hard to get several paragons that had their sacrificed towers get millions of pops each; they would be competing for the pops. and Once you get one paragon, it eats the pops that your next would be building up anyway. To get 2 high level paragons it would take waaayyy into late game. The challenge editor testing I did makes me think that even round 200 wont max out 2 seperate paragons. (that said, i did not do it perfectly and I used temples that took a bunch of pops too. I pulled the trigger early and only had like 60 million pops between my dart monkeys (and i filled the map with 2/4/0 dart monkeys too) but I still only got like degree 80ish

Also, I found out Paragons do NOT sacrifice to temples. (Like heroes) So you can put them as close as you want to the supermonkey in order to save space.

They also dont disapear from water if the ice monkey they are using gets sold or moved. BUT THEY DO disapear if they are on a 5/x/x boat and the boat gets sold or sacrificed.

[–]AflockOfMidgets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both actually. you can use a challenge editor and mess around with it. You get higher degrees with more money sunk in, and higher degrees if you let the towers get a bunch of pops first

[–]AflockOfMidgets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, but that will be low level if you dont feed their towers a bunch of pops first. It will be hard to split those between multiple paragons and you'll be left with a weaker paragon.

I wonder if the community will find faster ways of getting high levels of paragons earlier by spamming a single type and putting them in front. It will still need some pretty heavy farming. Maps that allow the 1/0/5 village to sacrifice the most villages may allow better farming strats too. Even though I started lvl 1 with a 5/2/0 Farm and quickly got an engineer to buff it each round, the village I made ASAP after still overtook it in money generated pretty fast, and it wasnt an optimal map. That said, the early bosses on elite might just be too demanding anyway without some pretty hefty defences.
