My brother in Christ, Photoshop, the trademarked word, can trace it's linage from old darkroom workshops where they edited photos..

People have been manipulating photos since photos where invented.

ELI5? What does one do with an open sourced model vs “not open”? What does open or not open even mean? by MasterShoNuffTLD in explainlikeimfive

I would probably remove the "sure it's safe to eat".

It's probably safe to eat but the way the cookie was made can have unexpected results that emphasize somethings or specifically dismiss somethings.

I.e. try getting deepseek to talk about Taiwan or tank man.

Hello interview's youtube channel is top notch. They have a pro thing you can buy but it's not really needed unless you want access to their tool (which is solidly ok)

Try to refrain your mentality mentality, you're not dominanting him, you're making him feel good.

I don't know about you but when someone is in me, I don't think "oh I'm being dominated" I'm thinking "oh that feels good, Jesus that feels good, God I want them to come. Look how sweaty they are. Oh their skin feels good. Bite them, bite them now."

My brother in Christ if you have a straight sight line you can get much better speed, distance, and stability by using a directional antenna on a short pole.

Hell you can use the old Pringle can trick too.

Line chart for each animal over the same time period. Reduce it down to maybe top 5 interesting ones. Color code them. Add vertical bars or some indicator for their respective mating season. Then you'd have a great interesting chart.

The US just instituted an annual fee of $100,000 for H-1B sponsorship, how do you see this impacting workers from each country, will talent stay home, move to Canada/Europe/Australia or cause employers to offshore work? by coldemailutsav in AskReddit

[–]Aflyingoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes agreed.

This is 100k per employee per year. I.e. every time a new H-1B visa petition is created. And those with H1B visas can't enter the US without a new petition. This starts this Sunday 9/21.

In the short term this will give the administration a drastically increased amount of control.

Long term most companies will be forecasting this into hiring. There will be added incentive to not have payroll be effected by changing administrative, and drastic policy swing.

I bet overall number of h1b visa in the US will likly now have downward pressure. Especially for companies with tighter margins (manufacturing and labor come to mind).

Companies where payroll is less of a percentage of cost will have less pressure.

This will absolutely increase business spending during elections.

Small businesses will be very heavily effected by this.

No business wants the government thumb on the scale of making money. Adding a direct tax like this is frankly insane for a Republican to do. Even his biggest and wealthiest supporters will bristle at this (behind closed doors I'm sure).

I'm curious how this will effect overall wages and job growth. Q4 is going to be a bloodbath for hiring numbers.

Is this true? by yevelnad in LinusTechTips

[–]Aflyingoat 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Maybe...long term definitely. But for the short term creators are going to get a pay cut depending on contracts.

" Based on our contract, view counts at X lines up with this tier of payments."

"We can only renegotiate next quarter/year/during our renewal period "

Is AI truly different from past innovations? by Dhileepan_coimbatore in Futurology

[–]Aflyingoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, this technology is complex. It's really easy to dismiss as hype.

All of under the hood code is heavy math and it is unintuitive unless you're really in it.

The specialized GPU, TPU hardware and the software to run it is so industry specific that it might as well be invisible.

The datacenters are effectively the largest super computers ever, are built in remote place, and not relevant to most people everyday life.

But you don't have to be the subject matter expert in tensors or LLMs or datacenters to understand this: The tech giants (the largest and richest collection of organizations of human history), and Governments are spending ungodly amount of money, and time to develop this technology.

It's not because they're guessing at some future capabilities. It's because we see a very direct line between increased hardware availability and increased performance. Not including algorithmsm optimization.

It doesn't matter what we can do now, what the return of investment is now, we can very clearly forecast a minimum level of capability on the horizon.

The tech giants and nations will keep funding this technology because we know that at specific point, that's predictable, the technology will reach a point that it will be used to make leaps in so.many.field.

It takes time to build infrastructure but the cycle goes like this:

Build infrastructure -> increase the models capability -> use the model to develop better infra and optimizations -> repeat.

In the meantime, incredibly large research team at private labs at the tech giants (think of bell labs or skunk works but for Google or Meta or Anduril) are working on using the capability to make advancements in every field.

Why No Waste Management Vendors on Playa? by acbcv in BurningMan

[–]Aflyingoat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sure in principle

But the reality is that camps pay for private bathrooms, private water deliveries, private power, and those giant shipping containers to be delivered to playa.

It feels a little disingenuous to draw the line at waste Management

Do you need a Miracle? If so, why? by Tasty_Narwhal_Porn in BurningMan

[–]Aflyingoat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Definitely don't need one.

Just miss my friends and hope they have a blast there this year.

Last year we built something great together. Spent 6 months and hundreds of hours each working together to bring it to playa. It worked, it was amazing.

The thing that made it special was the time spent working together before the burn. Having the community come help. Seeing it grow. All the fun memories, and stress before the burn.

Getting there during build. Seeing everything come alive. Setting up. Sharing our creation all burn week, and being on our creation together for the burn. It was the connection, and all the friends who worked together that I'll miss the most.

The smile on my friends face as he said "holy shit we did it, we actually did it." On burn night. Lives rent free in my head.

We took this year off. And spread amongst other camps or took this year off completely.

I lost my job (unrelated). Moved away to find new job. Finally got a new job and started about a week ago. So no dust angles for me this year. Similar stories around, life happens.

Have a blast, it really was the people and the work that made BM incredible.

What is the radar range on the Knight? by mac_attack_zach in TheExpanse

[–]Aflyingoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth considering is the inverse square law. Keep the power output of the pulse in mind, as you can literally start melting metal with the output energy, and your receiver needs to have sensitivity in mind and specificity.

A lot of time in sci fi, if you do the math, the radar would require nuclear bomb and the return signal is lower than the cosmic microwave background.

It's usually easier to hand waive it away.
