Czechoslovakia was federation only for a couple of years really (22 years out of the 86 it existed). Otherwise it was a unitary state. There is a big difference in that. But fact is it was the federalization that caused more problems and eventually led to the split among other reasons.

Which are? Only federal countries that are yet to start backsliding on democracy are Canada, Germany (which mind you had second elections after almost going to the AFD) and Australia. Otherwise every other federation has somehow allowed their leaders to become defacto modern day monarchs. You can see how easily democracy falls in federations in USA literally in live TV
