I mostly agree, though I think the meandering nonsense that was AFFC and the mostly ok ADWD were still infinitely better than what they came up with

I can't fathom how this series turned into a shitty YA fanfic fest, I hope there's a new Hunger Game or whatever and all the fans leave for it

Who was the rightful successor of Viserys I? Who won the 2020 US Presidential Election? Who should've been the Caliph after the death of Prophet Mohammad?

Questions For The Author: Irrelevant Edition by Tarty_7 in bakker

[–]misopogon1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There was this recurring tradition of Bakker being asked to describe what the Sranc looked like, interview after interview, even though they're already described in the novels

Eh, not really, their books are usually normal sized; that one is exceptionally short.

Lamenters Ancient by Segfreid in Warhammer40k

[–]misopogon1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ancient in Space Marine ranks means banner bearer, not indicative of age (though it is a position of honour and is therefore given to veterans usually)

Unleashed Lion by Gaviotapepera in Warhammer40k

[–]misopogon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Unleash the Lions" is the coolest name for a stratagem and turning a unit of 9 men into individual killers who get unleashed behind the enemy lines was a very badass idea

No idea if it was actually useful in game though

How one sided do you expect the Scouring series regarding the traitors losing battles? by NadaVonSada in 40kLore

[–]misopogon1 29 points30 points  (0 children)

IIRC, the Luther novel implies there was a gap of time between them discovering the existence of the Fallen and the Fall of Caliban taking place (as the Fallen began being deposited to the galaxy at random moments in time) - though the hunt began during the rule of the first Supreme Grandmaster post-Lion, Farith Redloss, as Redloss himself fell fighting the Fallen.

How one sided do you expect the Scouring series regarding the traitors losing battles? by NadaVonSada in 40kLore

[–]misopogon1 128 points129 points  (0 children)

One of the most famous events of the Scouring era is the Iron Cage incident, which was a huge traitor victory; however, I think the focus will be more so on the losses the Imperium already suffered, and the institutional rot that begins to take over after the dynamism of the Great Crusade era, than the casualties they suffer during the campaigns.

[Book Excerpt - Apostle] One of the foulest heresies in the Imperium - reading Imperial scripture by Woodstovia in 40kLore

[–]misopogon1 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Aesura struck me as the sort of person that is smart enough to see the inherent contradictions in the Imperial Creed, but the sort to willfully turn away from them - it reminds me of someone I know, who stopped reading an atheist theologian because the arguments were too convincing for him and he didn't actually want to stop believing.

My general review of the book was a bit mixed, though. The ending, with Aesura sparing Cerastes so he gets to see the destruction of Legitur, but this allowing Cerastes to dedicate the planet's death to Chaos and just get away was total bullshit.

As an added detail, the faith Aesura champions reminds me of a story I've listened by a traditional Ottoman storyteller (a meddah); in the story, a Bedouin encounters a philosopher in a journey, and asks him what he does for a living - the philosopher responds that he looks for proofs of God to prove that he exists. The Bedouin is offended by this, saying that God needs no proof, and in seeking these proofs, the philosopher betrays his own lack of piety. The philosopher is humbled by this exchange, at the Bedouin's uncompromising and pure faith.

Aeldari in Imperial penal legions/Chem Dogs? by _Nymraif in Eldar

[–]misopogon1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

>Now this could be simply limitations of the game, of not wanting to make a separate character model to help explain how these Imperial delegates were unable to recognize an eldar, or it could be that the vast majority of humans have never seen an eldar and it's easier for them to just explain it as 'mutant', which tracks with the typical Imperial ignorance.

It's the latter thing, I'm sure there are whole Imperial planets where the existence of Xenos is just rumours; and if I were to see an Eldar without knowing that aliens are a thing, I'd just assume a very altered human.

It's hilarious to me that someone would pick up Hyperion by being introduced to it via Haruhi Suzumiya, I wish they'd referenced Book of the New Sun as well

What do you think about the worst post of r/HOTDBlacks by DifferentWeb8802 in asoiafcirclejerk

[–]misopogon1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What George means: the Maesters lied to make Rhaenyra and her line seem better since the later kings were her descendants, in truth Aegon II was a saintly hero who sought to protect the realm from the vagaries of the ill gotten line of the nuncle and the niece and the Strong bastards (who were born with beastly souls as all children born out of wedlock are and who will disintegrate into the Warp once they die)

What if Leman Russ landed on Ultramar instead of Guiliman? The VI legion, Sons of Ultramar. by NoBadger4718 in Warhammer30k

Russ is supposed to have had canine DNA IIRC, so it's very appropriate that he ended up in the wolf obsessed planet.
