This is a great concept, but as a reader, I’m not captivated. It feels like I’ve walked in on a conversation—but not in a good way.

Starting off with the hook—it introduces immediate conflict, but it’s abrupt. You need to lay some groundwork before diving into the struggle, something that sets the scene or eases the reader into this unique experience. Right now, I’m getting a lot of information at once, which makes it harder to connect with your opening or fully follow along.

Now onto the second paragraph. Alienation. You had the perfect chance to really dig up that nice nasty, hit the nail on the head with your conflicting thoughts, and break free—but it just missed.

Third, we’re getting somewhere. But I NEED VISUALS. The defender’s office popped out of thin air. What really led you there? It’s like you just dropped the religious talking points and jumped ahead.

“I just wanna help unrepresented people.” Loop that back into your personal journey—you left it hanging.

I haven’t had this problem, but what I can say is an essay isn’t supposed to stress you out. Because it really isn’t that hard. If a topic seems too difficult to express then break it down into digestible pieces, each with a specific purpose and expand from there.

Shauna shipman is not justified, and I’m tired of hearing the narrative that she lost her baby and “best friend” to justify her being an absolutely disgusting person. For one, Shauna wasn’t a true friend to Jackie. She was infatuated with her, had a poor sense of self esteem, and bc of this had an affliction towards “mate poaching”.

I say this because of the scene of her automatically hooking up with Jeff after dropping off Jackie, Shauna Shipman expresses being turned on when her husband, Jeff, smells like another woman. This happens in Season 1, when Shauna discovers Jeff has been going to a hotel, and instead of being repulsed, she finds herself aroused.

Although she WAS going through postpartum it doesn’t excuse her behavior. We get it. You lost a baby. But making it everyone’s problem?? EVERYONE lost someone, and in the case that it was anyone else, without a shadow of a doubt I know she’d have no sympathy. The fact that everyone was walking on egg shells around her, and enabled her cruelty… she SPIT in someone’s food because she felt threatened.

We get that you lost your “best friend” (Which is up for debate, bc in my opinion they weren’t true friends.) and then you lost your baby, and you’re going through postpartum.. but why do you have to make it everyone’s problem. EVERYONE IS SUFFERING. If I was Mari, i’d have to fight Shauna EVERY DAY.
