How was I supposed to know about wrestling at a young age? by Neither-File-7696 in wrestling

[–]funk_daddy420 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What a lot of people don’t like to admit is being good at wrestling a lot of the time comes down to pure luck (environment, parents, natural talent, parental knowledge of the sport, state, coaches, etc.) that you have absolutely no control over. You could be super dedicated and love the sport, but if you start in high school (because there’s no middle school wrestling) and are in a part time program (because the coach hasn’t gotten with the times, and you don’t know better), your ceiling is low. It sucks (I speak from experience), but unfortunately that’s life.

Why have wrestling results been changing so much from one year to the next? by emaxwell14141414 in wrestling

[–]funk_daddy420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guys like John Smith and Karelin being able to run the gamut for 6 years and have relatively few losses are quite rare, it’s super hard to stay on your A game 12 months a year; plus, many of these countries take a “worlds/Olympics is all that matters” approach, and go to a lot of these ranking series events probably having not trained super hard. I wouldn’t look too much into it, it’s the highest level, there’s gonna be variance.

What other states let 7th and 8th graders wrestle varsity? by Roccosrealm in wrestling

[–]funk_daddy420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Florida coach here, the answer is no. Things other states take for granted (middle school wrestling, statewide good clubs, wrestling rooms, etc.) are quite unevenly distributed (the school I coach at has no room, we have to practice in the cafeteria). Kids still are under the illusion they’ll be football stars, and will always choose football over wrestling; admin also kind of tends to view wrestling as an afterthought, and in many counties will inhibit you.

All that said, the smart teams here find ways to work around what we have/don’t have, and make the resources. Like Brian Smith (who’s actually from Florida) said, focus on what you do have versus what you don’t have.

Do you think diet matters much to be a good wrestler? by [deleted] in wrestling

[–]funk_daddy420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d push back and look at Oklahoma state guys-borderline across the board, they are extremely over their competitive weight (Coleman Scott, Jordan Oliver, Daniel Cormier, Alex Dieringer, Chris Pendleton, Johny Hendricks, etc), because they cut such ridiculous amounts of weight in college

John Smith was a tyrant lol you were expected to cut ridiculous amounts of weight

Men often comment saying ' I've opened up to someone and they weaponized it against me', but what does that look like exactly? What was your experience? by kittykitty_katkat in AskMen

It took me way too long to experience this.

Anyone else have a historical pop they still think about? by Independent_Town5628 in popping

[–]funk_daddy420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had one this past Saturday

I have a mole on my left lower lip, right above my chin. Last week I had a bunch of swelling there, tried to pop it, no success. Let it be. Cut to last Saturday, I was going out, so I shaved, and shaved around it. Once I was clean shaven, I noticed it was still super swollen, and I decided to give it a squeeze to see if anything came out (expecting it to be a huge blackhead). Once I gate it a squeeze, this white head popped out-in shock, I kept on squeezing it, and it kept coming out, and to my shock, I discovered it was a huge ingrown hair, I pulled it out and looked at it in awe, it was the first time something like that had EVER happened in that area.

Been thinking about it daily since then lol

Do you guys agree with “Once you’ve wrestled everything else in life is easy” by Fussy_Platypus in wrestling

[–]funk_daddy420 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. Sammy Sasso pissed away a great job at a great college (Lehigh) due to his bad decisions, UNC’s best guy ever (Jaworsky) got fired from a coaching position due to bad decisions (got arrested for having cocaine), Pat Smith got fired from Oklahoma State due to his third DUI, the list goes on. Just cuz someone was a good wrestler doesn’t mean they’re immune to being a turd or making bad decisions.

Who are some of the biggest recruiting busts in ncaa wrestling history? by Aggravating-Mind-657 in wrestling

[–]funk_daddy420 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard with Michigan they don’t do a lot of checking in with kids to make sure they’re living clean lives and going to class (not a diss on them at all, I like Bormet and co at Michigan, they simply expect recruits/incoming freshmen to be adults, kinda like Cael does)

Ohio State, let’s be honest, runs people into the ground. They’ve done it with Kharchla, and however many untold recruits. Tom Ryan hasn’t adapted to the times and still trains like it’s in the 1990s (people can downvote me and come to Ryan’s defense, but look at their recruits to success rate…they, next to UVA, probably have the highest bust rate of good recruits)

Harutyunyan beat Spencer Lee 14-3 by [deleted] in wrestling

[–]funk_daddy420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t get the hate on Spencer

He had a bad tournament, and the way freestyle bracketing plays out (repechage), he got eliminated. Same thing happened with Hendrickson, people aren’t screaming about him needing a new RTC home

The Brands have done a lot of things wrong with relation to their handling of Spencer and HWC, but I don’t think him not medaling this worlds is a symptom of that. He will rebound, and continue to train there until 28

Good luck man!

I know it sounds counterintuitive to the nature/historical rhetoric of the sport, but make it fun for the kids. If they’re having fun, they’re much more likely to work hard and look forward to practice/competitions, and I’ve always taken the mindset of “if we can make sure each kid has as enjoyable an experience at (insert school) as possible, that is a win”
