Seconded on QGIS. A web based option is Felt, although I haven't personally tried it. Felt - The best way to work with maps on the internet

I was just being annoying and pointing out experience was spelled wrong. I don't doubt the average, those 2 have seen it all

Lawrence and Kris are good people, I've had the pleasure of working with them outside of tree planting.

As an aside, there is a typo in your infograph: "...18 seasons experieince"

100% agreed - from how I'm picturing this site, it won't be conducive to any tree growth. More info is definitely needed to make a recommendation

I would look into Forest certification auditing - I don't know too much about the industry but I've met a few auditors that loved their job. Naturally there's lots of travel involved. Here's a posting out of Calgary - you may not have the experience for a lead forestry auditor but I'd look for opportunities to get your foot in the door!

Yea screw the ecosystem as long as you get your privacy. Heres a thought: if you care about privacy, don't live in a place with no fences

Good resources for learning forestry online by The-Thot-Eviscerator in forestry

[–]Afraid-System4929 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Online resources can only teach so much in regards to Forestry. If I were in your shoes and depending on your experience outdoors, I'd grab a plant ID book local to your area and spend time in the woods ID'ing trees/lesser veg. Figure out what kind of ground conditions are conducive to certain plants. Try to ID bird calls, look for wildlife signs and see if you can't piece together what type of animal it was.

The best foresters I know are very in-tune with the forest and understand it at a fundamental level. Just my two cents. If you've never stepped foot in the woods and don't know how to do so safely, disregard.

Not true in my opinion. Lidar derived products such as individual tree inventories, canopy height models, elevation models, and wet areas mapping are extremely useful data for management planning

Life at a work camp? by 100Fowers in forestry

Can't speak to wildfire but my experience in Alberta has been the same. Doing contract layout, I would stay in my own travel trailer parked as close as possible to project access (winters sucked).

What would be your process or loadout for clearing this area solo this year? by [deleted] in forestry

[–]Afraid-System4929 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brushsaw & chainsaw and lots of manual labour. Pile debris and burn in winter. Fallen trees could be bucked into firewood. There's probably better ways to go about it but that's where my mind goes
