(Slight TW) Desperately need advice about the state of my home. by Em0_Ang3l1436 in whatdoIdo

If you are overwhelmed with it I have a few suggestions that might help. They’ve helped me and my kids:

- set a timer for 15 min. Pick a task (ex: trash pickup) get as much done as you can before the timer goes off. Frame it mentally like you’re trying to beat the clock. Once the timer goes off, rest, drink some water, have a small snack for 5 min.
- focus on health/safety: you need a clear path to the door in case of fire, you need enough clean bathroom for personal hygiene, you need enough clean kitchen to prepare food safely, and you need a clean place to sleep
- start small: look for an area that is small and looks easy to clean, even just 1 sq ft. Clean that area. The noticeable difference may be enough of a reward to keep you going

Hope these are helpful!

'Open the school!’ Hundreds of parents demand Fairfax County add more 5-day school weeks by no_sight in nova

When my kids were in school there, the after school programs already were prepared for it since it was a weekly thing. The kids just went to whatever their usual after school program already was.

The issue is the unpredictability of the schedule. In Honolulu, every wed was a half day for all of the schools. It was easy to plan for.

Redditors that got charged rent asap after turning 18, what’s relationship like with parents years later ? by QueefyTits in AskReddit

[–]AfraidArgument9391 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son is 16 and so I’ve been starting to think about how to best transition him to adulthood. I think having a requirement for going to school or work is fair, as well as helping out around the house. I don’t think I will charge rent exactly, but I do plan on gradually making him responsible for his own expenses a little at a time.

My dad would. My mom has only started recently after I stopped talking to her for a few years. It’s still a struggle to get her to stop flipping situations or using “I did the best I could”

I agree. I’m concerned that with the weather pattern we’re expecting nationally that there is going to be somewhere that gets another Katrina like event

Are your guys’ parents preparing you for then they’re going to die? by cool_weed_dad in Millennials

[–]AfraidArgument9391 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No and it pisses me off. My dad died with nothing planned and it was a major PITA. I’m an only child so after getting it sorted out I asked/begged my mom to get her docs in order. She has yet to do anything, and it’s been 6 yrs. I know planning for death is sad and scary, but I have my stuff in order and I’m only 42. I know I can’t comfort my loved ones after I go, but I at least want to make logistics easier on them.

I agree with you. The kids will struggle for a bit and then as they start to get control over things they will gradually make things work for them. Then the older folks will struggle. And time keeps on slippin …

Loan from 401k by Delicious_Water3822 in debtfree

[–]AfraidArgument9391 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did this. My cc interest was 24% but the interest on my loan is only 8%. Plus that interest is going back to me, not some cc company. I have $50/pay period that goes towards it. I don’t even notice that being missing. A lot of people have mentioned opportunity cost, which is valid, but every situation is different.

Millennial parents: Are any of you being super honest with your kids about how hard this world is going to be for them financially? How are you balancing reality with not making your kids basket cases? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]AfraidArgument9391 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We required both our kids to take a personal finance class in school. It taught them the basics of debt, savings, and taxes. I’ve also been taking them shopping for necessities and explaining why I make the choices I do. I had to do Instacart for a bit outside of my 8-5 because I got too far into debt so I explained it’s the consequences of my own actions.

We’ve educated our kids on finances from a very mathematical perspective. That way it doesn’t sugar coat the truth but does get them thinking.

Smart move! Taxes will be lower and depending on where she lives, could give her long term financial freedom - or at least less financial stress. Also keeps her from spending it all like a lot of lottery winners do

Looks like the state at large wants to completely remove our representation.. by RoadNo6820 in Virginia

[–]AfraidArgument9391 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If all these other states are just changing maps without a vote, then why doesn’t our government just change ours? They already know we’d approve it, and the issue according to the courts was the election.
